Good Reference
I'm a 4th year medical student, and found this book extremely helpful during my Blood Bank rotation. It is really good at explaining the concepts behind the technical procedures.

Use this book as a doorstop
This book is not for the beginer in blood banking.It is disjointed, confusing, difficult to comprehend, and does not flow in a logical manner.It was written by several authors, including Harmening.This probably accounts for the confusing flow.May be helpful to experienced blood bankers, but if you are a begining student trying to fathom the many intricacies of blood banking, this book will make you want to tear your hair out.Without a doubt, the worst text book I have ever read and I have a master's degreee and 1.5 years toward my PhD.Avoid this book like the plague unless you have prior knowledge or experience.It will turn you off blood banking forever.I give it a D for effort (a poor and poorly edited effort). ... Invaluable tool for becoming productive and efficient in your research lab
This is the book all grad students should read because this book discusses the things that you typically don't learn in grad school.The book is meant for new faculty, but anyone interested in learning practical lab management issues is encouraged to read this book.There is something useful in this book for both green rookies and experienced veterans.
Fantastic for the new professor
I love this book and only wish it was published when I was first starting a faculty position.Definitely a biologist's perspective (and a lab-oriented one at that), but it covers many of the trials and tribulations of starting a new faculty position: setting up a lab, assessing priorities, making hires, managing committees, managing colleagues, etc. Don't be caught without it!

The dis ease of living in the US
The costs of sprawl are enormous.This book describes the costs in terms of many different types of public health measurements.If you haven 't thought about sprawl, this is a good place to start.It is chilling to think about how many physical, emotional, psychological and medical ramifications there are to the US automobile lifestyle.The price to degradation of the planet was not discussed in depth but that too would make you think about our legacy of our lifestyle to the quality of our planet for future generations. I am encouraged that the topic is being developed.The automobile lifestyle is addictive and to change it will require a paradigm shift.The shift starts with organized discussions and lucidly presented data.This book is excellent on both accounts.

A broad (though not particularly deep) guide to the public health problems associated with sprawl, including: (1) the air pollution caused by sprawl-induced auto traffic, (2) the health consequences of the reduction in walking caused by automobile dependency, (3) injuries and deaths from auto traffic, (4) water quality problems associated with suburban development, (5) the alleged intangible costs of automobile dependency (e.g. driving-induced stress, the isolation of nondrivers).None of these issues are addressed in enormous detail; for example, the book occasionally mentions pro-sprawl counterarguments, but does not fully address them.But then again, each of these topics could probably justify a separate book. ... Veteran's Survival Guide...Don't File a Claim without it!!!
Excellent book, that covers all aspects of filing for benefits from the Veterans Administration. John Roche also provides email assistance for specific questions. I would think that this should be required reading for all Service officers and their veterans. TOP NOTCH A+++

Best Veterans Guide Ever
I have served in two previous wars, Vietnam and Desert Storm and also on several other long tours of peace time duty. When I was recalled from retirement to go to Iraq I was already a 10% disabled veteran. I thought I knew, or at least thought I had a better then average laymans knowledge of the VA Compensation and Pension system. Little did I know, until I read Mr. Roche's book how little I really knew and what misconceptions I had. This book is a must for every armed forces veteran who has served in war or peace and has ever been injured or treated for an illness while on active duty. Mr. Roche writes in a clear and concise style and he presents the facts without being dry and technical. This book is a must purchase.
I bought this book and doubled my VA disability pension
This book is a nuts and bolts no nonsense hands on Bible for veterans claims. I used it to increase my disability from 40% to 60%. It exposed the mystery of how the VA handles claims and explains how to prove a claim to the VA.I would like to see the author write another book focused on appeals. ... Read more

Excellent book. For those who are still not convinced about the link between mercury and autism I strongly recommend the book "Mercury: The Winged Messenger".

I read it twice, and I'm still angry!
A lot has been said about blatant coverup and shoddy science exposed in this book by David Kirby.It looks like there's some movement now, certainly at least in part due to this book.The Senate just passed the Combating Autism Act of 2006, and it's now on to the House.
Explanationsfor Autism Epidemic
I thank the families mentioned in this book. Each one tried to help their autistic child and wanted an answer to what caused Autism.Some of them started SafeMinds as a result of their research and inquiries.I was born in 1977 and have an ASD so the possible thimerosal in vaccinations causing the Autism epidemic in the 1990s would not explain me. Thimerosal (p. 48) is 49.6 percent organic mercury used as a preservative in vaccinations.Organic mercury (p. 48) is the second most toxic substance on earth. Forget about "polluting" our air and water, and ask why are we putting toxic materials into children?People are more important than the earth! For some reason The Center for Disease and Control and The Institute of Medicine along with Lilly (a vaccine manufacturer) have not cooperated with them in answering their questions or giving them help. Why would Dr. Thomas Verstraeten go to Belgium in 2001 after leading a study on vaccination datalink study on thimerosal, be told not to answer any contacts from people in America about vaccinations, and to escape subpeonas (p. 341)? I appreciate Congressmen Dan Burton (R-IN) and Dave Weldon (R-FL) for listening to these families, holding hearings (I have called their offices to thank them), and talking the CDC and IOM into getting the public answers to autism and thimerosal. ... Helped me Pass NCLEX first trial!
Great Book to have during your course of nursing, whether you're studying for nursing finals or NCLEX.I did not take any review classes and passed NCLEX first trial with 75 questions.If you spend good amount of time studying, you can do it too!

Beware!
This book and CD are full of errors!!The CD was absolutely useless.They appear to be translated from another language and many of the answers were simply wrong, or the book would contradict the answer.In addition, it wouldn't run on Windows XP.This is a waste of money, try the Saunders series, they were much more helpful.I'm surprized so many people have given this book quality ratings, if you own the book take a look at page 691 question 28, this is just one of many errors.

Wonderful Review while in school and for the boards!!
This book is wonderful!!I know that is has some mistakes on the math area, but I over looked that, I did not buy it to help me with the math, rather to help me pass my nursing exams.I have had this book since my second semester in nursing school.It has helped me with through all of the semesters, and then helped me pass the NCLEX!

Outstanding
Excellent analysis regarding the troubles that plague the nursing profession. Problem is - how to fix it? I'm not sure we nurses can tolerate the poor working conditions much longer...

Australian nurse' reflection on a valuable text.
As I read Suzanne Gordon's account of nurses in todays world of cost cutting health care I could not help but admire her insight. While she is primarily a journalist her observations are so much of that of the nurse clinician trying to be there for the patient. Situation at my work place is identical to that of most hospitals Suzanne speaks of. This book is in the library at the university of which I am a graduate student. As an experienced nurse I would like to urge nurses entering the profession to read this volume and take heed before it is too late to make a difference.

A good reference on shelf
It is a good refence-type textbook for epidemiology.I first used it in my introductory course of epidemiology at Harvard University's program of Master of Public Health.Even Prof. Rothman came to classroom in person for several lectures.It was a good book but accompanying books were needed for better understanding of the topic.Now I am in my PhD program at National Taiwan University, Taiwan and using the book for the 2nd time.There are still new things to discover from the book.For a reader who uses the textbook twice in graduate studies, I recommend it as a guide or outline for further exploration into the field.Advanced studies require lots of reading, aren't they?It should be on your shelf, for future reference, but not the only one.

The standard textbook in the field
With all the pros and cons of an advanced-level book written by many authors, this work is widely considered the standard text in the field. As a professor of mine says, every epidemiologist should have it on her/his bookshelf.

unnecessary details on statistics subject
I agree with many reviewers here that the book is great, but poorly organized and put too much on statistical methods. I have read through it from cover to cover for my exams.Nevertheless, the first part discussion is very good, but you need to read other books before reading Rothman's book. Acutally, I really hate Greenland's writing, it is too obscure. I would not recommend this book to students. ... Read more

Great Pharm book
I love this book!It is a great compliment to the text that I am using for my Paramedic class.It was a required text for class, but I really like the book.It is easy to read and the information is not only interesting but easy to understand.
Excellent Reference
This book was required for my pharmacology class for paramedicine.It's an excellent text book, but watch for several misprints on drug dosages, (ex: milligrams instead of micrograms on drips).It made me pretty confused when the book indicated my calculations were incorrect when I knew I had the correct dose.I brought it to the attention of my teacher (retired medic) and he confirmed the misprints.Besides that, and excellent text.

Still Worth A Read
While Prof. Jamison's previous writing has inspired me and also given me insight to the potential pitfalls that face someone with bipolar disorder, I found this book to be a bit more technical. Perhaps a little too technical.

Easy Read that Explains How Policy is Made
I am taking a course in Health Policy and the Political System and opted to use this book instead of that recommended by my professor. This book examined all the important aspects of policy making - paying close attention to the political actors - and has helped tremendously in my understanding of the politics surrounding health policy.

Best book in print on the health policy process
I have used this book for a number of years now in a class I teach on the Politics of Health Policy (along with Kingdon's classic). It provides an excellent overview of how health policy is made and the politics around it, drawing on both the academic literature as well as recent policies.
