A history of America's best-kept secret
With a limited understanding of osteopathic medicine's roots, I set on a crash course to find an osteopathic medical history book similar to what a Kenneth Ludmerer's "Time to Heal" did for the history of medicine itself.And with Norman Gevitz's book, I was surely not disappointed.One would think that as a book recommended by the AOA and written by a osteopathic medical school professor, the book would be slanted.However, Gevitz does a great job at maintaining neutrality as a historian while demonstrating a certain degree of candidness, particularly about M.D./D.O. relations and the future of osteopathic medicine.Despite my ecstasy for this book, I do feel that there are certain portions of this book that can be further elaborated (reasoning behind the four-star rating).For example, I would like it if more material was included about osteopathic medicine between 1960 and today.Specifically, Gevitz seems to gloss over the political and social reverberations behind Henry Kissinger's monumental decision to admit D.O.s in the military as equals to M.D.s.Nevertheless, I thought the book was very well written and has definitely sparked an interest into one of this nation's best-kept secrets. ... Hope for Our Sick Hospitals
Since we have had several personal experiences of almost dying or being infected after a medical procedure, we tuned into the PBS broadcast of the documentary "Good News... How Hospitals Heal Themselves". It was so revealing that we got the book for both personal and business reasons. In our business, ESF, Inc., we frequently deal with hospitals and those in the medical and nursing professions. Both my husband, Dr. Peter J. Esseff, and I feel this book should be read by personnel in every hospital from administrator to janitor. The "Systems Thinking" initiatives put into effect by the hospitals in the two "Good News" health care systems (SSM Health Care, St. Louis, Mo. comprised of 23 hospitals, and the Pittsburgh Regional Health Care Initiative, Pittsburgh, PA, comprised of 40 hospitals) demonstrated how a variety of "hospital diseases" could be treated and eventually eradicated. These initiatives were used initially by Dr. W. Edwards Deming in helping Japan "work smarter, not harder" in improving their auto manufacturing industry. In these two health care systems, statistics are given that demonstrate how the hospitals were able to: focus more on patients' needs; reduce costs, deaths, suffering, infections, duplication of services, waste of time and supplies; avoid deadly mistakes; streamline their bureaucracy; and work as a Team, from the top to the bottom of the chain of employees, by not placing blame for errors committed and empowering their workers to recommend changes to improve the quality of care in the hospitals.
Save your life....and others too....
Read this book and give it to your doctor and your hospital administrator and they will learn how to reduce waste, suffering, hospital-acquired infections, costs, errors and improve patient safety and save lives.And additional money or government regulations are not required to begin this improvement plan.

insurance handbook for the medical office
I was very disappointed in the 9th revision. Although the HIPAA compliance and e-commerce sections have been updated, the material in the workbook is exactly the same. That includes all the same editing errors from the last edition. I spend hours of my time "re-writing" these editions when they should be correct at publication. The same ICD-9 and CPT errors are still there. I am seriously thinking of changing books for my school. ... Read more

This is the Book You Need
I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply and equipment business. I would with a number of physician groups. I agree with the previous reviewer that this is an essential book for all medical service providers in private practice. So many physician groups fail to collect all the fees they can because they don't have a full understanding of proper coding and billing.And, many lawsuits could be avoided and/or minimized with proper documentation.And, of coure, as any medical malpractice attorney will tell you, the best way to avoid getting sued in the first place is to communicate, clearly and frequently, with your patients.This is the kind of information they don't teach in medical school but every physician needs to know. Successful medical practices today require so much more than just quality medical care. This books helps you figure out how to do all the rest.

Photoshop Restoration and Retouching
Very detail lessons. Not for the Photoshop novice. A good working knowledge of Photoshop is needed. Excellent learning tool for those interested in all aspects of photo restoration and retouching.

Katrin Eismann is a great teacher
I've read her other book on compositing and all I can say is I love her style of teaching! It's inspiring and not canned at all. She doesn't teach you to just dial in numbers, but instead she focuses on the concepts so that you can then decide what numbers you need by yourself!

A Fantastic Text
I have to say Brady Publishing and Dr. Bledsoe has done it again.An excellent textbook covering the topic of Critical Care Paramedicine.My favorite chapter is Altitude Physiology authored by prehospital critical care pioneers Larry Johnson and Bryan Bledsoe.After reading many textbooks on this subject (which pales in comparison) I have found that this particular chapter very complete and comprehensive.I highly recommend this text for any individual who is interested in pursuing a career in prehospital critical care. ... Desperate to find real help
My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety.In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject.I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped.Save your money and order this book first.It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

Magnesium can relieve anxiety; please read this review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard)
This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully.
