Realistic and Practical
This is one of the best "how to" books on management I have read in years. It captures the culture of hospitals (and health care facilities in general) very accurately and the realism lends credibility to the book. He gives authentic scenarios and tells how he and his managers dealt with them. Also, he is realistic in that he includes some tough remedies such as helping someone find opportunities outside the organization when she absolutely poisoned her departmental relationships and refused to change. If you are wanting to change the culture in your organization this book will certainly help you and give you a different perspective. And, although it will be most helpful to health care managers, it will also be applicable to managers in any setting that want to change their culture and become a better, more productive, and more satisfying place to work.

Especially useful for healthcare upper management
Quint's book was recommended by a fellow manager and I have been very pleased with his ideas.Although geared to upper management (some of his ideas work best with an organization-wide implementation) there are several things I plan to implement right away.It is difficult to find management titles so well tailored to the healthcare community; this one fits the bill nicely.

Must read for customer service businesses.

Pretty Good
Yeah I was forced to read this by my boss...but it was quick and worthwhile.I am an experienced manager but I still picked up some valuable tips. This is worth while reading- short, to the point, and informative

Universally applicable!
This is one of my favorite books. It is geniusly simple, respectful and powerful. I was surprised to find out that I can easily apply the 3 principles in almost every relationship. So many people around deserve to be praised and taught a lesson and it is very important HOW you will do it because the final result can be very positive or just the opposite. It is a very valuable book which is very well written and is a fast read. I also highly recommend the other books from the One Minute Manager series because every book has a lot to offer and they will be especially helpful if you are in a business environment.

Good introduction to HS for non medical types
Using this text for a distance learning course.Seems to provide a good introduction to the subjects of Health Services.Written on a level I can understand, not being a medical person, but a hospital support person.

Oddly parochial title ...
If this book is only about the US health service, why doesn't the title say so?There are quite a few other countries out there in the world, and almost all of them have health services!

A pretty good book for what it is...
As with all economics textbooks and the subject of economics in general, this book is a bit dry.That said however, it's quite thorough in its coverage of how consumers, producers, and insurers make decisions about health and health care.It gives explanations that are rather simple to understand and goes in depth as far as would be considered normal for a 300 level elective course.I should probably note that my instructor is one of the book's authors, so take my review how you will. ... Non-Working Disk
The disk that came with the book is a data disk only, and does not contain the program that created the data.That is why the data disk is not a workable disk, unless you have The Medical Manager installed on your computer!The book is too geared to be used with the Medical Manager Software Program, and is difficult to read it as a stand alone book.
Medical Manager review
I am an instructor for the Medical Manager class and have been for over 5 years.I have used almost every version possible with the Medical Manager.This is a fairly good book for students to learn from.As long as the person reads the instructions and then looks at the exercises, they should have NO problems.However, if the person just looks at the exercise and does not read the material, they may have difficulty.Some of the exercise/pictures are different then the actual reading part but not too many.Overall this book makes it fairly simple to learn this program.

... although impractical !
Ok. Let us consider it realistically and professionally. Nothing to say about the book more than what all others have said. Simply great. However, enjoying a book is not, and will never be, a goal in itself. What matters is what benefit you can get out of IMPLEMENTING what is in it.

Not Just for Hospitals!
I have been a Lean Production Systems Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. I have been influenced by Deming, Juran, Goldratt, Peters, Covey, Kotter, Drucker, Greenleaf, Senge and many other authors on leadership and management of change and continuous improvement and organizational learning. I first read Fred Lee's book as I began a project to implement lean systems in several hospitals. "If Disney Ran Your Hospital" ranks as one of my favorite books on not only excellence in customer service but on leadership and organizational development. I've seen a lot of health care texts and this one is by far the best book of its kind.Very current and thorough coverage of all aspects of health care delivery. This book really shows you how all of the components of the health care system fit together. Fluffy
This book is near 600 pages, but it could be condensed to 300 easily: by cutting back on some simplistic flow charts and over-explanation.Maybe the goal was to make the book readable for the high school level, but I didn't find its style or level appropriate for a graduate (MBA) textbook.One further annoyance was the authors' shameless and open promotion of socialized health care.A more balanced take would give the authors greater credibility. ... Good basic information
This is a very good source for a basic overview.It is well-organized and clear, but it is only a starting point.I didn't have a clue about where to start, so this is perfect for that.

I bought this bought and found it very informative. It is an excellent start-up tool and very easy to read and understand. After two year, I still refer back to my book.

Hard to get past the Typos
This book was amusing, informative and very easy to read.The author spends much of his time promoting himself as a Practice Manager and offers his help and his advice "by the hour".It is difficult, however, to envision the thought of paying an expert whose own book contains a minimum of 1 typographical error per page.I question the attention to detail and fiscal expertise of someone whose own publication reads like my 3rd graders book report (before editing).Typos aside, the book provided us with a baseline level of Practice Management information and offered a solid introduction to what will be a new endeavor for my husband and I. ... Troubling Guide to Alien Territory
This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person.It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person.Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts.It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models. Second career?
My daughter works with horses, makes very good money, but only works 20 hours a week. She was considering taking medical transcriptionist courses.I bought this book to give her a real taste of what the courses would be like. It would be a good additional career if she could work it around the horse training she loves and excels at.This book is perfect for anyone considering a medical transcriptionist career. I gives you a very clear idea what is involved in beginning transcription.

This is the textbook I used in my Beginning Medical Transcription course and I found it to be very helpful.Audio cassette tapes were given out from the teacher with model operative, autopsy, H & P, cytology, and consultation reports that coincided with the lessons in the book. The terminology that was in each chapter was used frequently in the reports to assimilate the student with typing the words, as well as being able to hear it pronounced in different ways.It gave a background lesson in basic terminology, including suffixes and root words.I thought that this book helped me in great ways. ...
