Helpful - but out of date
I had this text book overnighted to me due to the fact that my campus bookstore didn't have it in stock.I paid the shipping then found out later that the book had been updated and my classmates were all using the fourth edition.The editions are rather similar and the book is still helpful.There are enough "real time" examples as well as charts & graphs to make this a necessary text for Health Politics.The appendix section is also noteworthy. ... The forth edition of Management Principles for Health Professionals has three parts and 15 chapters. Part one has two chapters about the health professional's modern arena. Part two has five chapters about management functions-planning, decision making, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Part three has eight chapters about practical considerations for keeping the department running smoothly-budgeting; committees and teams; adaptation, innovation, and conflict management; training and development; authority, leadership, and supervision; human resource management; communication; and day-to-day management. Excellent Book
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte.We were the first class to use this book.Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail.I continue to use the book as a resource.I am currently a hospital CEO.

Great balance of theory and practice
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.

A Must for the Novice Planner

This book will not get you there
This book is written as the product of an Institute of Medicine initiative to reduce the mortality and morbidity from errors in the American healthcare system. The Institute of Medicine is a private organization created by congressional charter to advise the federal government on specific matters. Their mission statement is to "advance and disseminate knowledge to improve human health." This book is the final report of the Committee on the Quality of Health Care in America. Their homepage is available by searching the Internet using the full committee name. Membership of the committee and sponsors of the project are available at that web site. Highly recommended
A very comprehensive and informative book, even though the examples are for the US it can be used and applied to other countries and systems. Gives a good grounding for financial understanding of healthcare entities. Highly recommend it to anyone looking interested in financial managment of health care organizations

Well-Written Text for Beginners
I'm taking my first biostatistics class with W. Daniel's Biostatistics text.It's a good book, but I think it's for more advanced statistics students.Munro's text is more suitable for beginners who have never taken any statistics class.It explains the basic but important statistical concepts in plain English without using much mathematics.Very well written and easy to understand.The exercises at the end of each chapter are well picked. They are short, yet helpful for reviewing the important concepts that have just been covered.

Statistical Methods for Health Care Research
A very well-written and helpful statistics book. It was required reading for a course in Quantitative Nursing Research last semester. Overall, the concepts such as t-tests, correlation and regression were explained in relatively simple terms. Examples with answers were found at the end of each chapter and the book came with a data disk. This was the most user-friendly statistics book that I have used so far!

Great book
I had a chance to review this book. I think the authors can make us much better understand, particularly one who is about to learn the concept of statistics. You can apply this book with the SPSS program in order to interpret the results. Anyway, I still like the calculation parts which areremoved in this edition (3rd) compared with the last one. A great read.

Inspiring, Instructive, Energizing. Must Read.

Easy Read that Explains How Policy is Made
I am taking a course in Health Policy and the Political System and opted to use this book instead of that recommended by my professor. This book examined all the important aspects of policy making - paying close attention to the political actors - and has helped tremendously in my understanding of the politics surrounding health policy.

Best book in print on the health policy process
I have used this book for a number of years now in a class I teach on the Politics of Health Policy (along with Kingdon's classic). It provides an excellent overview of how health policy is made and the politics around it, drawing on both the academic literature as well as recent policies. How to empower health care consumers

Huge but a litle simplistic

In its almost 1,000 pages nearly every aspect of health care coverage is discussed. The format of the book includes some 200 pages written by Professor Herslinger followed by some 72 articles written by some 93 participants in a conference she held. As you would expect, the quality of the papers vary greatly. ==There are also a few reasons to disagree with some of Professor Herslingers basic thesis. She seems to believe that health insurers would compete in a fair market place to provide care to anyone. This is simply not true. If an insurance company can pre-select to eliminate giving any coverage at all to the sicker or more risky patients, it is to their benefit. An AIDS patient, with a requirement for expensive drugs can be folded into the coverage written for a large group, but an individual policy would have to be very expensive, or simply not written at all. The coverage of such patients is covered with what I think are unrealistic assumptions. ==The book presents a series of views that are just a bit simplistic, but which are forming a part of the national debate on health care. The information is needed if only to be aware of the discussion.
