5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opener
As a physician, John Abramson explains his experience and his research on the subject of pharmecuticals, using good medical and common sense, along with professionalism to investigate the overuse of prescription drugs. There are methods that should be followed for approval of drugs which aren't always followed; drugs are partially tested, information is slanted to cut time, laziness and time constraints contribute, faulty and partial information, all weave their way into the story of how the dangerous overuse of drugs harm consumers. Many doctors trust the medical journals for accuracy and current information on prescription drugs. Unfortunatly the journals get caught in the web of bad information by not verifying their sources. This book offers the medical field and patients in an eye-opening read on the real story behind the overuse of certain popular drugs and the process that goes on behind the scenes - along with a hint that once again, corporate America's greed stands to gain at the cost of the uninformed consumer. His daunting task to untangle this web and make it readable to a wide audience is well done.I'm appreciative for people such as John Abramson for taking the time and efforts to inform the public.

4-0 out of 5 stars There will be no solution to the health care crisis until we understand the foundation of the problem.
The lengthy title of this book sums up the question of "why are Americans, whose health is at the bottom of the developed nations, are paying so much more for that distinction?" Read this book. It will tell you why. There will be no solution to the health care crisis until we understand the foundation of the problem, and Dr. Abramson clearly explains why and how the current system benefits corporate profits, but not much else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!
This book wouldn't be so frightening if I didn't believe all of it was true. You know how it is when you buy a new car and then you see that car everywhere?Just in the last couple days while reading this book there have been a couple of newspaper articles about medical researchers being paid thousands of dollars by big pharma when working on drugs that they are in charge of approving or rejecting. It makes you look at the medications you might be taking in a whole different and more critical way.Everyone should read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars read this book together
This book is written by a husband and wife who continue to experience permanent impotence as a result of prostate cancer sugery. The book is structured like a "diary" with dated entires over a several-year period written separately by both husband and wife who are honest about their fears, disappointments and frustrations. It does not dwell on the surgery itself, but focuses on the post-surgical successes and disappointments as they try to engage in sexual relations using various options. It focuses on the loving relationship between the spouses, but it is also realistic about sexual needs -- from both partners' perspectives.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book on the subject of impotence. I am an 8 year Prostate Cancer survivor and this book tells it like it is. Virginia and Keith are to be commended for sharing the intimate details of their recovery.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've Found Real Hope After 14 Years
14 years after my husband's first diagnosis of prostate cancer I learned several facts in this book, but, most important, for the first time it has made me begin to believe that things CAN be different for us if we both choose to work at it.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars slow read
From the very first page, I found this book difficult to get through. Not only is it a very dry book, one gets bogged down in complicated sentence structure and undefined terminology. I think this book is probably designed for folks who already know a lot about managed care (see the bios for the two previous reviews). For someone like me, new to pharma, this book just wasn't basic enough to truly grasp the concept of managed care.

4-0 out of 5 stars ...covers the basics in an understandable and logical order.
The book covers the basics in an understandable and logical order...it is well-organized and complete. Chapter 3, The Infrastructure of Managed Care, is very interesting and informative - is very good at describing howmanaged care organizations do what they do. Chapter 4, Provider Networks, and Chapter 5, Purchasers and Managed Care, are very good chapters withgood descriptions of provider networks and purchasing arrangements. (Reviewed by Bernard J. Turnock, MD, MPH, Professor and Director ofCommunity Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Illinoisat Chicago.)

4-0 out of 5 stars ...well thought out and easy to read.
The content of the book overall is well thought out and easy to read.Chapter 1, The Evolution of Managed Care, is an excellent chapter. The Medicaid and Medicare sections of Chapter 5 are excellent. Chapter, 7,Quality of Care, is an excellent chapter--one of the best on quality I'veread.(reviewed by Carmella M. 5-0 out of 5 stars i needed it for class
I bought this book because I had to have it for school,
5-0 out of 5 stars More than the essentials
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A core book, with a'lot of problems.............
I'm a few short weeks away from taking the NAB exam to become a licensed nursing facility administrator. This book was the core text for the 5 courses required for licensure (at least it was where I attended, anyway.....to be more specific, it was the only textbook required for all 5 courses) - - a little disturbing when you think about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you suffer from Lymes, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue or Sick Building Syndrome, Read this Book !
Mold Warriors contains advanced, sophisticated, effective, state of the art testing and treatment protocols for some of the most perplexing diseases and disorders, confronting medical practices. These protocols treat actual causes of baffling, disabling diseases, including Lymes, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and possibly even Multiple Sclerosis by altering gene expression, cytokine, leukotriene and hormonal imbalance, in addition to removing deadly neurotoxins, from the body.Mold Warriors contains detailed explanations of sophisticated immunological and hormonal tests, which many physicians have never even heard of.The appendix contains detailed information concerning where to obtain the various tests, diagnostic and procedure codes, etc., which practitioners will find very helpful. The first VEGF we ordered, based on recommendations, in this book, revealed why one of our chronic fatigue patients remained fatigued, with impaired concentration, after her hypothyroidism was corrected. Many of the advanced protocols, in this book, will eventually become accepted standard of care.Numerous, fascinating case histories and accounts of epidemiological investigations make Mold Warriors more readable and comprehensible.Mold Warriors contains many inspiring stories of noble struggles against suffering and injustice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mold Warriors
Working in a building that is suspect to have mold indoors I was referenced this book by a doctor. The information is this book is very scary but truthful. Dr. Shumaker has compiled his years of experience, knowledge and resources in a well written book. I highly recommend Mold Warriors to anyone who wants more knowledge about mold and what "it" can do to us!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Shoemaker!!!
I am the "Tami", along with my fianc Jim Frasca mentioned in Chapter 4 of Dr. Shoemaker's book Mold Warriors. Over the last 10 years, I have seenover a hundred so called"specialist" and spent thousands of dollars to come up; undiagnosed, broke and disappointed at the medical community in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy read for those not in the public health field
Ok..So, I HAD to read this for a graduate level elective course. For a political science student, I can say that this is a relatively easy read. Although, explanations of some of the international structures are almost farcical. The book progresses from ancient public health to contemporary which is quite interesting. With a caution, near the middle of the book some terms are not explained as easily, they are merely stated. This is a rather good book but if you are looking to understand American public health-you need an additional book. This book is very expensive, but at least it is filled with content.

1-0 out of 5 stars a poor book for undergraduate and graduate students
this book does not fit into an undergraduate program. it is much to detailed and quite boring for the undergraduate and most graduate students. this book has content but no deliverance for the masses to comprehend.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, comprehensive overview of International Health
Paul Basch's new edition of his Textbook of International Health is a winner! It features a readable style, a comprehensive perspective, timely factual information, and a fascinating historical background of healthproblems and the multitude of issues and efforts, past and present, toimprove the health of populations.Must reading for any and all who planto work within the health sector of countries in the developing world andfor those who seek to understand and appreciate the many determinants whichimpact the health of a population.Read more
