2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely written before the economic downturn
Although published in 2001, it is easy to see that this book was written before the 9/11 disaster and the economic downturn that occured following that. This book makes some good points especially on the expanding role of the patient/consumer in health care, but some of the strategies discussed seem no longer applicable. It does, however, exemplify exactly how dynamic the health care industry is and how the best laid plans can be suddently dashed by forces external to the organization.5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book from Coddington, et. al.
This book is a must-read for health care managers struggling to understand how consumerism and technology will affect their organizations. The authors take up where they left off in their prophetic "Beyond Managed Care" with a set of practical strategies for the next five years. This book draws heavily from case studies and interviews with industry leaders, making its strategies immediately concrete.Perhaps the biggest contribution is the authors' deep understanding of the industry, where consumerism will manifest itself in unique ways. There are some real pearls in these pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars These Authors Score Again!
The authors have, again, combined their considerable expertise and foresight to provide us with guidance down each of several pathways along which Health Care could evolve. One of the factors central to that evolution, and enunciated by the authors,is the issue of quality and its relationship to technology and consumerism.Whatever may be ones role in Health Care, this treatise provides pertinent insight into evolving trends, and offers appropriate strategies to accommodate thereto. It's a darned good book.Read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent review and basis for public health study
Well written and a great basis for understanding issues and policies concerning the development of public health programs worldwide.I was most impressed that the authors stressed that we in America are intergrated with the world on health issues.Even at the local level we need to think globally.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work in the real world of Alzheimer's Disease
I sent this book back, it could encourage unproductive activity situations. Although there are some good activities mentioned in this book, most of the activities outlined either simply don't work or are, at worst, counter productive for Alzheimer's persons. The author, who appears to lack knowledge of dementia and activities (she is a nurse not a RT) should become acquainted with Reisberg's 7 Stages of Alzheimer's or Johnson and Johnson's Alzheimer's as a 'trip back in time' article (American J. of Alzheimer's Disease, April, 2000). Just because a person works at a facility which cares for demented persons does not mean she knows what she is talking about. I wonder if this person has a degree in Gerontological Nursing or Gerontology? This author ill-advises readers to use activities that aid in "reality orientation" or "24 hour reality orientation" for a person with dementia. That idea is so dated and counter-productive it is ridiculous. The requirement for 24 hour reality orientation in nursing facilities is currently being either changed or questioned by most gerontologists. For example, the trend is for changes in the 24 hour RO requirement written into the policy and procedures for dedicated dementia wings or for nursing facilies (since they are running over 60 percent dementia),where the Activity Director validates the Alzheimer's person's delusions. Why? Because RO simply doesn't work or delievers a bad message for most demented persons. Unlike depression or delirium, demented persons have lost their abilities to think, remember and reason. So instead person-centered activities are the trend, where the activity accomopanies the AD person on his or her "trip back in time" instead of imposing your reality on the different reality of the AD person. When the Alzheimer's person has time-traveled back to age 20 or 30 and she is told she has grandchildren or an 80 year old husband, the only result of this correction will be either an argument or a message to the AD person that she is dumb! In summary, reality orientation does not work for dementia persons and should be restricted to depressed or mildly confused elders only. RO was originally used for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome men in Alabama and then became a national requirement for all nursing homes. But nursing homes house mainly demented persons now. So this outdated procedure is counter productive for demented persons. Activities focused on person-centered care are the current trend. Person-centered activities do mostly the opposite of what is suggested in this really bad book. Person-centered activities use validation instead of reality orientation and are matched with the 7 stages/sub-stages of AD persons in sink with the person's "trip back in time."

5-0 out of 5 stars A caregiver's bible
Since first reading this book over 14 months ago, I've found it a constant source for information and resources. It addresses the problems I encounter on a daily basis AND gives sources for products that I can use to provide better care for my loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beverly Bigtree Murphy, author, "He Used to be Somebody,"
This book is a must for caregivers and professionals facing the challenges of Alzheimer's.It is the first book I've read devoted to Alzheimer's care that offers something more than reasons to institutionalize our people.Caregivers need information, options and where to access tools andresources before they can make informed decisions about their choices ortheir role as caregiver. As someone who spent 25 years designingrehabilitations plans for handicapped people and another 10 years facingthe care of my husband, Tom, who died of this disease in our home, this isthe first volume I've picked up that speaks of caregiving in positive,life-giving, do-able terms and not the drudgery that we are all led tobelieve consumes the process. While it offers pragmatic, workable, affordable solutions to caregivers, it never loses sight of the continuedhumanity and needs of our family members for love and regard in spite oftheir loss of cognitive skills. My experience as a caregiver was met withnothing but obsticles in my quest to keep my husband home, a journey Irelate in my book, "He Used to be Somebody."I found Tom's careproblems were 75% attitude and 25% tools, resources and help. This bookoffers both to families.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening expose and 'must have' acquisition.
The development branch of the multi-national pharmaceutical industry has begun to expert its clinical research to the developing world, where ethical oversight is minimal and desperate patients abound - there to conduct research forbidden in the U.S. That's the hard-hitting message of a title based on several years of original research and reporting from Asia and Africa, making THE BODY HUNTERS: TESTING NEW DRUGS ON THE WORLD'S POOREST PATIENTS an eye-opening expose and 'must have' acquisition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bold Expose without Sensationalism
In a remarkably bold 'report', the lurking dangers of recent trends in clinical trials through contract research organizations is well presented. Without adopting an obvious higher moral ground nor using a broad brush to paint all of Big Pharma as pure evil (as some recent books on Big Pharma have done), the author focuses purely on the issue of clinical trials. Using recent examples from various companies (all familiar names to the average reader), the author poses interesting ethical questions regarding the "use" of patients in developing countries. In a series of interesting observations, the author explains why it is more "economical" and "practical" for drug companies to perform the FDA-required trials using measures such as "events" (number o f deaths during a particular number of days, or n'th death). While the bulk of the book is devoted to examples ranging from India, Latin America, and Africa to discuss the modalities of clinical trials and raise pertinent questions, the conclusion of the book is not very substantial. However, the author does point out that drugs should be seen as "social goods" and not mere new products; thus the means of developing them should be fair. Point well-made. A must read for anyone in the medical/pharmaceutical industry, investor, or a patient who uses any medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Foregive and Remember
While other reviewers focus on how Bosk examines medical ethics, as a researcher focusing on organizational behavior and quality, I find this a fascinating study of two broader topics. First, Bosk presents a sociological taxonomy of error that anticipates later work on human error (Reason's "Human Error," Perrow's "Normal Accidents"). Second, his discussion of the process of professional socialization is a must read for anyone doing work on management and the professions.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Reminds Physicians of our Responsibilities
As a medical student at the University of Chicago, Forgive and Remember helped shape my view of what good, caring physicians need to do when policing their own. I am currently on the quality assurance committees at three hospitals where I practice.I am buying several copies ofForgiveand Remember for my committee colleagues who have not read this book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for upcoming residents
This book is required reading at my ENT residency, for good reason.Bosk applies a somewhat technical (for me) sociological paradigm to a surgical residency, focusing on the relationships between faculty and residents. Again and again the issues that he so clearly elucidated come up throughoutmy residency. It is doubtfully of use to non-physicians, but I highlyrecommend it if you are beginning residency. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A call for global health volunteerism
In this impressive and immensely readable book, Dr. O'Neil provides a critical and comprehensive analysis of the forces behind global health disparities, along with an inspirational call for health professionals to become more engaged in alleviating suffering in places beyond our normal scope. He does this by presenting well-researched data on the history of poverty, health, and international aid efforts, and combines this with the on-the-ground experiences of himself and others. In doing so, Dr. O'Neil dispels some of the myths perpetuated by governments, transnational organizations, and others, regarding the roots of poverty, ill health, and efforts to alleviate this suffering.

2-0 out of 5 stars One reason why the pharma industry is tanking...
---5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for any pharmaceutical product manager
well John lidstone has done a recommeddable job in the book. The Methodology is to the point and The process is implementable in any type of Therapy/Product.This book serves as a Ready reference for any marketting plann where we need to BE RIGHT for sucess of the Brand.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's actually more general than specific to Pharmaceuticals
This book is an elegant and agreeable summary of Kotler's marketing management and Porter's competitive strategy. This is half of what I was expecting. However I was also expecting that these broad marketing conceptswould be adapted and tailored to the specifics of The PharmaceuticalIndustry. Unfortunately and unlike what is suggested by the title, the bookhas the rhetoric and the feel of a general marketing textbook rather than aPharmaceutical oriented manual. At a macro level the words"product" or "person-to-person" are far more commonthan "drug" or "sales representative-to physician". Ata micro level the book also favors generalities instead of importantPharmaceutical details. For instance, in the Chapter about Communications(8) the authors extensively discuss the elements of the promotional mix andthe relationships with an advertising agency (something important for anyindustry). However, even in that chapter's section about otherconsiderations, they totally ignore the interaction with regulatoryagencies such as the FDA's Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising andCommunications. This, as any Product Manager in Pharmaceuticals knows, iscrucial for the success of the promotional message. Another similar examplecan be found in the Chapter about Sales Strategy (7). In here generalmanagement consulting matrixes (of the BCG 2X2 type common to any industry)are discussed in detail but the actual industry-specific strategy issues, such as sales force rotation and segmentation of calls to health careprofessionals, are avoid. Finally I believe that the price of the book ... is meant to be elitist so that is bought only by top management(the potential clients of the authors which are consultants). This is apity because despite its flaws the books present handy general marketinginformation in an easy-to-read, friendly format, that emphasizes tables andbullet lists rather than extensive text. It will be useful fornon-marketing Pharmaceutical Industry Professionals that interact withMarketing and by Product Managers with no academic business background. Forthose PM out of business school the book is too basic and contains arelatively small amount of data pertaining to the pharmaceutical industry.Such data can be found elsewhere. For instance the 27 pages of Chapter 2(marketing Pharmaceuticals) of Schweitzer's book on Pharmaceuticaleconomics and policy contain much more data than this entire Pharmaceuticalmarketing planning book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Money goes for Breast Cancer Research!
Ms. Delinsky, a breast cancer survivor herself and one of my favorite Author's has, with the help of MANY people sharing their 'recollections', put together a *wonderfully moving, and absorbing book* that will have you laughing, crying AND wondering about your life, your health and WHY you are here. All proceeds from this book go to an excellant cause...'Breast Cancer Research'. May I add that this book is NOT just for breast cancer survivors...it is also for friends, family, lovers and anyone who 'loves' someone who has been effected by cancer. A *MUST* read! I guess I am somewhat biased as I was fortunate enough to have had a recollection regarding my own Mother included in this very book. PLEASE...pass this on to friends and loved ones...you WON'T be sorry!
5-0 out of 5 stars Help for breast cancer victims and those who love them
This book is a "must read" for anyone who has a family history of breast cancer, is currently undergoing treatment for it, is a survivor, or is close to anyone who has breast cancer or has survived it.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Mom Loved this Book
Just so you know, I have not read the book. I had the book shipped directly to my mom. She found the book "inspirational and educational". She also liked that the book is a collection of discrete short passages so she is able to read one or two at a time.
