GREAT BOOK!
This book has a ton of information on the essentials of health care. Stuff like the difference between HMO, PPO, and POS. It also has some very informative graphs. It is divided in three parts (1) An Overview of Health Care in the United States, (2) The Resourses for Providing Care, and (3) Paying for, Managing, controlling, and Evaluating the System. All in all I give it 5 stars.

Overdetailed
A most interesting subject, not least because of similarities between today's "health nazis" and the real nazis! But for the non-specialist reader (such as myself) there is a little too much mundane detail, and discussion of what paper was published in what year, who wrote it, how often it was cited ... Robert Proctor presents a great deal of evidence that the nazis' exerted massive control over most facets of ordinary citizen's lives. Yet somehow, he never reaches the obvious conclusion that such compulsive regulations,even if arguably well intentioned,ultimately lead to a large scale sacrifice of basic freedoms. Not true
As an American who now lives in Canada, Sally Pipes is not at all correct. There are NO waiting lists and I call my doctor and I get in that day. I LOVE the health care system here. I used to pay for my health insurance before I moved to canada and now I don't and I get the same care for free!! Plus I get all the name brand drugs if I need them. When I was living in the US, my health insurance turned me down for pre-natal vitimans, which I thought was ridiculious. I don't know where sally gets her facts from.

Excellent Overview of Strategic Planning
This book is an extremely readable overview of strategic planning in healthcare today.The chapters build on each other very well, and leave the reader with an excellent picture of the whys and hows of development of strategic vision relative to the position and capabilities of the organization.The section on strategic intent is particularly useful.The tables and figures are useful, clear, and easy to understand.Each chapter ends with "Lessons Learned", a useful summary and reminder of the chapter contents.I recommend this book as both a primer and refresher for those interested in healthcare stategic planning.

A practical guide to strategy development
It is clear when reading Health Care Strategy for Uncertain Times that the authors have significant experience in strategy development in the healthcare arena. The book clearly outlines a process for strategy development and points out common pitfalls along the way (e.g. mistaking data for information, focusing on experience rather than skills when choosing members of the strategy development team, etc.). Furthermore, the book describes useful tools for addressing uncertainty (i.e. decision-analysis, scenario planning and game theory) and provides a framework for determining when a specific tool will prove useful. Good, but not great
there is no question that Dranove is an expert in the field of health care economics. His book is interesting and contains a great deal of good information. Easy to Read and Informative

A Good Primary Text for Physicians in Training
This is an excellent book that covers the most important functional elements of health economics. I am a teaching Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Virginia Health System and I plan to incorporate this book as a primary text for discussion in our resident program. The only deficiency is a lack of discussion of past, present, and future insurance models such as classic and discounted fee for service, capitation, defined benefit versus defined contribution, and medical savings accounts. ... Provocative book on healthcare issues
Healthcare reform requires serious discussion. That's exactly what Dattilo and Racer provide in their book, "Your Health Matters." The premise of the book is straight-forward: The problems with our healthcare system lie with the skyrocketing costs. This, in large part, is due to the Federal government's culpability in creating a healthcare entitlement mentality among the citizens of this country. The goal of this book is to demonstrate that a free market approach to healthcare will correct the inefficiencies with the system while dramatically lowering costs.

Excellent reading
The book covers all essential stages of quantitative risk analysis, from identifying risk sources to calculating rational decisions under risk. Though it announces health risks as its main target, the methods and techniques are equally applicable to other areas, e.g. finance and engineering. Review ofBook by Dr. LA Cox, jr.
This book is essential to all serious users of risk assessment and management. It is accessible, well written and hasmanyexamples that illustrate the issues discussed. Dr. Cox'sbook spans from cancer model to decision and game theory. Its broad coverage and depth make the book an essential companion to those who must account for uncertainty and variability when assessing the potential outcomes ofalternative choices. Because the book consider the single decision makers, as well as situations characterized by several decisionmakers, it isof much importance to current debates having to do with uncertain causation in health and environmental decisionmaking.I now look forward to a text on ecological risk assessment by this Author because this area of risk assessmentrequires a unifying framework, much like he has done for human health.

Hope in an Unlikely Place
Kevin Winge's book is filled with gripping stories of the hope and suffering that AIDS has wreaked in Sub Saharan Africa.It gives the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa a human face with stories of a cook, a gas station owner and an AIDS education worker, to name a few.His stories could reflect those of families anywhere in the world.The book is a call to action for each of us to step up to the responsibility we have as part of the global community.
