Hip replacement
I bought this book for my mother who needed a hip replacement.Both my mother and I found it very helpful because it describes so clearly the experiences that patients have.It prepared us well for her operation and recovery.

This is a very informative-well written book.
Dr Trahair is a Consulting Psychologist at LA Trobe University in Australia.He has written a 175 page book relating his personal experience in undergoing total joint replacement of his hip with additional personalhistories of 14 other individuals.If hip replacement is in your immediatefuture you will find your counterpart among them. Very informative and beneficial to everyone

An authoritative and fierce assessment of our medical mess.
The authors are eminent and accomplished physicians associated with several of the outstanding medical institutions in the world. They focus their attention with a a kind of brutal humane sympathy on the manner inwhich our medical system has become entwined in games of technology ratherthan styles of care, in the organization of cashflow rather than themovements of patients to health. They show how easily third-party paymentsbecome a form of "big-brother is watching you" except that thebrother is a miserably small-minded accountant or share analyst. This is atonce a heart-breaking book because of the awful reality it so fairlydocuments. But it is also reassuring that two skilled practitioners can soclearly and productively document what is happening in medicine, and alsowhat can be done about it. the rise of a "caste system" in the US
The authors strongly couch their presentation as attesting to the rise of a caste system in the United States. Where the caste consists of the chronically ill, infirm and marginally employed. Several members of this group are interviewed. In the MidWest, Mississipi and other regions.
Uninsurance is a real problem
Lack of insurance is a verifiable problem, and one can obtain more information from the Institute of Medicine which published 6 reports.I'd recommend starting with the last: Insuring America's Health-Principles and Recommendations and an article by Leslie Weatherly from HR Magazine: "The rising cost of health care: strategic and societal considerations for employers."
The Death Spiral Of Persons Who Lack Health Insurance
40,000,000 - 50,000,000 Americans have no health insurance and another group of Americans of equal size are underinsured. Americans have to choose between food and medicine. Americans live in a land of opportunity until they have a challenge to their health. If you have a challenge to your health and if you do not have the best private health insurance you will enter a death spiral as the change in your health will drain away your money and your hope. Everyone should read this book!!
This is a well written and thought-out explanation of the definite decline of American Medicine.I started reading and could not put the book down until I had finished.Dr. R. has written in good lay-language to really clarify and explain this awful mess. I am 75 years old and worry about the years I have left, but I worry so much more about my children's older years.It is a dismal outlook.I hope that someone can wave a magic wand to help this situation and bring back the "family doctor". Dr. Michael Rosenblum has taken the time to clearly detail the problems confronting our medical care system today and in the near future. This is a must-read book. I wonder why the national press has not picked up on this very informative and enlightening book. Where are the commentators when we need them?

Potent little book - required reading!
Dr. Rosenblum gets it all right here.Preserving excellence in health care for future generations will demand a serious soul search, particularly on the part of insurance carriers and other 3rd parties (including trial lawyers).The brightest and best students are loathe to study medicine because they cannot afford the education/sacrifice, and afterwards they cannot afford the spiraling overhead and risk of practice.Primary care medicine has indeed been thrashed.The doctor lays down his message with brilliant clarity.Fine suggestions are made (so don't give up hope).This potent little book is required reading. ... Quack!
Szasz and the reviewers fo this book have obviously never suffered from nor known anyone who suffers from a serious mental illness. Far from being just bad or unwanted behaviors or 'fake diseases', mental illness is a devastating disease that ruins lives and often kills its victims.
The Politics of Medicine
This is a great book for laying to rest some orthodox but wrong ideas about our mental health. Szasz shows us that the orthodox way is not necessarily the right way. Certainly our own doctors are not going to blow the whistle on themselves, are they? This revolutionary psychiatrist shows us the real path to health, pointing us away from the wrong direction that the pharmaceutical companies have been leading us, and unfortunately, leading our doctors as well. It's a case of the fox guarding the henhouse. this book could save your life

Health care rationing.
Excellent analysis of the health care mess. However, like almost all other such books, it stops short of a solution. For a thought provoking formulation of a solution that provides better health care at lower cost by clearly defining what the health care system is supposed to be accompishing, and squeezing the fat out of the system, see "You Bet Your Life: The Zero Sum Health Care Game", available at hesresearch@yahoo.com.
Flawed in the longer run
I just heard one of the authors interviewed on NPR. Henry Aaron states in the opening that if health care costs continue to rise, they will move from 16% of the GDP in 2005 to over 33% by around 2030. He includes the caveat "that is a big if" yet the entire discussion assumes this is really inevitable.
Valuable Info
This is a topic that should get more attention than it does. Increased rationing of health care is coming, no matter how much we want to wish it away. Aaron and Schwartz deserve credit adding to the, so far limited, discussion on the topic.
