slow read
From the very first page, I found this book difficult to get through.Not only is it a very dry book, one gets bogged down in complicated sentence structure and undefined terminology. I think this book is probably designed for folks who already know a lot about managed care (see the bios for the two previous reviews).For someone like me, new to pharma, this book just wasn't basic enough to truly grasp the concept of managed care.

The book covers the basics in an understandable and logical order...it is well-organized and complete. Chapter 3, The Infrastructure of Managed Care, is very interesting and informative - is very good at describing howmanaged care organizations do what they do. Chapter 4, Provider Networks,and Chapter 5, Purchasers and Managed Care, are very good chapters withgood descriptions of provider networks and purchasing arrangements. (Reviewed by Bernard J. Book incredibly timely...
With the onset of an election year, Richard Hofrichter's book Social Justice and Health is incredibly timely and important.Despite being the 2nd richest nation in the world (only Luxembourg has a higher average GDP), Americans have one of the worst health profiles.The contributers to Hofrichter's book points out the many reasons why this is the case:The USA has the greatets proportion of citizens in low paying jobs, has the greatest number of poor people, and the greatest gap between rich and poor.This condition is made worse by its especially low spending on social infrastructure and on services that support the citizenry.Read more

Information about User Guide and Access Code
Just an FYI...which I learned the hard way.This User Guide and Access Code just allows you to access the online course, which has many useful features. (The textbook itself is great). If your instructor indicates that you need the "Online Component," this is it...and this is an additional cost to the textbook with accompanying Student CD-ROM.Also, buyer beware if you plan on purchasing this "User Guide and Access Code" from vendors indicating the item is "Used" or "Like New."**The Access Code can only be used once.** Unless the item is brand new, you may be getting an access code that has already been used and you may be denied access into the online course. Like I said, I learned the hard way. (Please don't take this the wrong way...there's nothing wrong with the vendors and, in fact, I buy many of my books from the Amazon Marketplace vendors. It's just that the publisher, Elsevier, only allows use of this Access Code once. If anything, I would recommend contacting the vendor directly to ask if the Access Code has already been used--just to be sure).

Great assessment guide for beginners
I really like this book. East chapter begins with a condensed review of anatomy/physiology related to the body system it covers. Then the reader gets step-by-step instructions on how to provide an assessment for that system (hands on, inspection, etc.), tests associated and how to perform them, normal/abnormal findings, and great pictures. It discusses cultural, developmental, and aging variables. The BEST part is in the documentation - it clearly tells how and examples for doing SOAP notes. At the end of each chapter are cool pictures of abnormal/disease findings. We use this along with the lab manual, which is decent, in our assessment class. One note of dismay: the CD that comes with it is useless, as is their website. Little info and the videos are about 8 seconds long.

This is a MUST book for all junior level nursing students.It has very clear and detailed descriptions of how to do a physical exam on every part of the human body.The pictures are of real people, not from drawings.Every chapter hassubjective and objective examination section which makes it very easy to understand and follow.At the end of each chapter, there sample focus assessments to further clarify the topics. ... HMO's
My 85-year-old mother recently fell and severely fractured her hip.Unfortunately, she belongs to a Medicare HMO based in Southern California.Because of the nature of her fracture, she required pinning of her femur, a more extensive procedure than the usual treatment for hip fractures.The HMO which was contractually responsible for her care denied payment to the Skilled Nursisng Facility after l8 days, in spite of written reports from her physical therapists and her doctor detailing the remarkable progress she was making.Thanks to this book, we were able to appeal the HMO's denial, which was immediately again denied by the HMO.The appeal then went on to HCFA for review and the denial was reversed.This has saved my mom thousands of dollars.It should be required reading for anyone involved with HMO's!

Required reading for people with health insurance
As a physician who has dealt with many HMOs, I believe this will become the premier guide for people to get the best care out of whatever system they're using.It is about time someone put all of the secrets andresources in one place. Medicine has changed significantly in the last fewyears - right under the noses of most patients and doctors. It's causedfrustration as quality care has diminished. This book will help you getback in charge. I think it should be given out by insurance plans as aguide to how patients should use the system. Congrats to the authors!

Failure to see the root causes of the crisis saves nothing
Newt Gingrich may be viewed by many as being a visionary, but when it comes to a keen understanding of the American disease care system and what it would take to transform it, Mr. Gingrich is quite blind. Saving Lives & Saving Money is a significant work by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, founder of the Center for Health Transformation; Dana Pavey, Gingrich's director of research at the American Enterprise Institute; and Anne Woodbury, vice president for health at the Gingrich Group. Together they have identified the principles of the transformation necessary to create a twenty-first century health care system that will save both lives and money.
Worthwhile Ideas and References That Need Editing
This book was written by former Speaker Gingrich and his associates for several reasons. First, to lay out the case in Chapter 2 "why reforming healthcare is doomed to fail and only a process of [completely] transforming health and healthcare can succeed". Second, to provoke a national debate and evolve a strategy for the solution one of the greatest potential political and budget crises of the early part of this century as the baby boomers reach retirement age and Medicare's unfunded liabilities skyrocket. And last, to provide examples of "transforming methodologies" that are actually being successfully utilized today and references to other information sources (including many web sites). He firmly believes that is possible to achieve the twin goals summarized in the book's title and have better health care while spending less at the same time.Read more
