4-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for transcriptionists
As stated by the other reviewer, yes, this is a list of words. That's why its title says "Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Words."If it were to include definitions, it would be a dictionary, not just a word book.2-0 out of 5 stars Not a dictionary

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the CCS-P Exam
I used Lynette Olsen's text, "Medical Coding Specialist's Exam Review - Physician", as a study guide for preparing for the AHIMA CCS-P Exam. The text contains information on preparing for the exam as well as practice tests for both sections of the AHIMA Exam and the AAPC Exam. The practice Abstracts were very helpful and facilitated research that enabled me to be very well prepared when I sat for the Exam.I strongly recommend this resource for anyone planning on taking the AHIMA CCS-P Exam as it serves as a very effective way of focusing your study activities.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for studying for the CCS-P and CPC test
This book is clear and to the point, and easy to understand. This is a MUST have book if you are studying for the CCS-P or the CPC test. Each Chapter has important information that you need to know for the tests, and then it is followed by a quiz, with answers after that. There is a CD that is included that is VERY helpful, because it has mock tests for both the CCS-P and CPC. After finishing the test then it is automatically scored and you know how well you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't transcribe heme-onc without it
As with all of Stedman's word books, this is power-packed and indispensible.I transcribe for cancer clinics, among other clients, and the people at Stedman's do a great job in this specialty as with all of their word books. In addition to hundreds of pages of terms related to cancer and diseases of the blood, there is terrific cross-referencing, appendices with details on different staging and classification systems, names and addresses of many major cancer centers (alphabetized by state, excellent idea), chemo regimens alphabetized by diagnosis, etc. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a bit superfluous
I'm a huge fan of the Stedman's books, as they collect a tremendous amount of terminology under each of several specialized areas for their various books.A medical transcriptionist must have such books, and I have found in three-plus years that the Stedman's approach is vastly superior to having a single volume with all terms lumped together.5-0 out of 5 stars Stedman's Surgery Words
An essential reference book for the transcriptionist, proofer, auditor or anyone who reviews dictated surgical reports on a regular basis. As with all of Stedman's books, this speciality specific volume contains the correct spelling of surgical words listed in alphabetical order. In the back of the book, it contains wonderful pictures of anatomic positions, patient positions, types of anesthesia and Dermatones. There is a pain glossary, example op reports and a listing of drugs by indication. A must-have reference! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Words, not definitions
The use of the Stedman's word books, this being only one of many, is primarily for those in medical transcription and others (medical authors, editors, proofreaders, etc.) who need an authoritative source on correct spelling and terminology. This is the stated intent of these books, as is clearly spelled out in the foreword of all Stedman's books. This seems important for me to mention here, as at least one reviewer of this book seemed disappointed that there isn't more information.2-0 out of 5 stars Index was helpful...

5-0 out of 5 stars Stedman's word books necessary for transcription
In reading the other review here, I get the feeling the reviewer isn't using this book correctly. The stated purpose and intent of each of the Stedman's word books is, quoting the publisher's preface, "to the wordsmiths of the healthcare professions---medical transcriptionists, medical editors and copy editors," etc.In doing medical transcription, I have *never* had to abbreviate "mercury," as transcription must be clear as possible.Mercury should always be spelled out.Even a common medical term like KCl (which *is* found in this book under K) must be spelled out as "potassium chloride."That is the unsurpassed value of the Stedman's word books.1-0 out of 5 stars Abbreviations you MUST know beforehand!
If you already know the abbreviation you need, this book is ok. If you need to know an abbreviation you are NOT going to like this book. For instance, need to know how to abbreviation mercury? If you don't know it starts with H...good luck.No index in the back listing mercury...page etc etc.Would have been nice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Book You Need
I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply and equipment business. I would with a number of physician groups. I agree with the previous reviewer that this is an essential book for all medical service providers in private practice. So many physician groups fail to collect all the fees they can because they don't have a full understanding of proper coding and billing. And, many lawsuits could be avoided and/or minimized with proper documentation. And, of coure, as any medical malpractice attorney will tell you, the best way to avoid getting sued in the first place is to communicate, clearly and frequently, with your patients. This is the kind of information they don't teach in medical school but every physician needs to know. Successful medical practices today require so much more than just quality medical care. This books helps you figure out how to do all the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Practice
Buppert's new book is truly exceptional. She weaves together the changing worlds of health care, business, law, research, and academia in a very practical way.She has created an irreplaceable resource for any and allof you nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician's assistants whodesire to strengthen your primary care practice, or to develop a practicefrom scratch.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first-line reference
As a general medical transcription reference, "Stedman's Medical Speller" is an outstanding first-line choice.Distilled from the vast tome of the 26th edition Stedman's Dictionary, this has, according to theeditor, 113,000 entries that not only include medical terms but alsovariant spellings, phrases, and some useful medical jargon. It iscompletely cross-referenced which is a godsend when one is trying tointerpret that-all-too-frequent mumbling dictator.Excluded from this bookare terms in pharmacology, pathology, biochemistry, veterinary andabbreviations.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for any Medical Transcriptionist

1-0 out of 5 stars very pathetic
This is the worst book I've ever seen in my life. There are no audiotapes, which you buy them separately cost about $200. If I have known that I should buy audiotapes separately, I would have gone to school and had paid tuition fees. They're all same.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Content
I found this book very useful and informative. There are a number of errors (probably typos) giving incorrect answers to questions on the CD Rom or the book, or both. With appropriate corrections it could be a five star rating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Error-filled cd-rom!
While I like the Pretest/Check your Progress method of reviewing terminology, there are so many errors in the scoring key that there is little benefit as you must recheck the answers with a dictionary. The transcription practice items are scored so erroneously on the CD-Rom version that you must use the key to check your work. And the cost of purchasing the transcription tapes is extremely prohibitive--much more than purchasing say a Prentice-Hall set of tapes and book.I've ended up purchasing a complete replacement for this text.I do not recommend this to anyone. ...
