A pretty good book for what it is...
As with all economics textbooks and the subject of economics in general, this book is a bit dry.That said however, it's quite thorough in its coverage of how consumers, producers, and insurers make decisions about health and health care.It gives explanations that are rather simple to understand and goes in depth as far as would be considered normal for a 300 level elective course.I should probably note that my instructor is one of the book's authors, so take my review how you will. ... Errors Galore
After purchasing the instructor's manual to check my answers, I found errors in every chapter!!From spelling to incorrect percentage amounts.I found myself editing the entire time to find their errors which contradict their text.When I got answers that were not an option in the multiple choice exercises, I would reference the book and the textbook would say I was correct, and the workbook did not.Not worth the money or the time.Extremely exhausting.

find something better to learn from
I took a night course which used this textbook. The instructor who is a certified coder and is an instructor at other institutions found MANY misleading instructions. You can be told to do something one way in the book but in real life at a billing job, you would have to do it another way. Also, we found many contradicting statements. They say one thing but do something totally different in their examples. It's really not worth the money.

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
Understanding Health Policy
This book is very well written. Though it crams a lot of information into a small number of pages, it is easy to understand. It is excellent at covering all angles of a topic.

A little too focused on clinicians
I needed a book to use for a class I am teaching.This book, while excellent was focused on the clinicians' point of view, somewhat to the exclusion of other angles.

Non-Working Disk
The disk that came with the book is a data disk only, and does not contain the program that created the data.That is why the data disk is not a workable disk, unless you have The Medical Manager installed on your computer!The book is too geared to be used with the Medical Manager Software Program, and is difficult to read it as a stand alone book.
Medical Manager review
I am an instructor for the Medical Manager class and have been for over 5 years.I have used almost every version possible with the Medical Manager.This is a fairly good book for students to learn from.As long as the person reads the instructions and then looks at the exercises, they should have NO problems.However, if the person just looks at the exercise and does not read the material, they may have difficulty.Some of the exercise/pictures are different then the actual reading part but not too many.Overall this book makes it fairly simple to learn this program.

Quickly settles disputes, answers questions, a "MUST" for all home care nurses & their management teams !!!!
I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients.Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms.Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing.The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care.Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines.There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well.All home care codes are listed.

Good basic information
This is a very good source for a basic overview.It is well-organized and clear, but it is only a starting point.I didn't have a clue about where to start, so this is perfect for that.

Hard to get past the Typos
This book was amusing, informative and very easy to read.The author spends much of his time promoting himself as a Practice Manager and offers his help and his advice "by the hour".It is difficult, however, to envision the thought of paying an expert whose own book contains a minimum of 1 typographical error per page.I question the attention to detail and fiscal expertise of someone whose own publication reads like my 3rd graders book report (before editing).Typos aside, the book provided us with a baseline level of Practice Management information and offered a solid introduction to what will be a new endeavor for my husband and I. ... This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person.It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person.Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts.It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models. Get this while studying for licensure!
I purchased this book while studying for my national and state licensing exams. As many other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent resource. Reading this book in between session provided me with a healthy break from the rigours of studying, while orienting me to thinking about the procedures and forms I needed to be developing for my practice once licensed. There is a wealth of information that could be a bit overwhelming as you are glowing over your new shiny license number and wondering what you need to do to get your clients into your practice. Using the strategy of tackling a form a day was also very helpful for me. This book will go a long way to helping you create a sound set of ethical and effective business practices that was probably not covered at all in your graduate training.
