The dramatic and chilling story of an Ebola virus outbreak in a surburban Washington, D.C. laboratory, with descriptions of frightening historical epidemics of rare and lethal viruses. More hair-raising than anything Hollywood could think of, because it's all Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true life horror story
A really compelling read! I could not put this book down. Before I read 'The Hot Zone' I had never really taken much interest in virology. Richard Preston writes his account very effectively in the style of a novel, but the fact that the horrors of Marburg and Ebola that he describes are actually true, gave me many sleepless nights. A frightening aspect of these filoviruses is that their source has still not been found. If only all non-fictional books were as readable as this!
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly terrifying from the start to the end
I am someone who loves classics... so I never read this kind. But I happened to read it on my trip to east coast. I finished within 2 days. At first, I was scared, then i accept the truth... it became better. And it's so good from the start to end... So realistic, u can touch the grip of it... feel like it's happening around the corner.
3-0 out of 5 stars Sub-par
I've been wanting to read this novel for several years now.Taking Virology during my undergraduate career only peaked my interest in reading about Ebola in a novel-style context. There's not much known about the Ebola virus, even to this day, and I was intrigued to see how Preston would incorporate this knowledge (or lackthereof) into his book. While the subject matter is extremely interesting and engaging, I will have to agree that his writing style is sub-par.I found myself skimming through whole paragraphs because of his mundane and repetitive diction and syntax. If it had been written by someone else, I think I could have immensely enjoyed this book (I'm a major science nerd, and I love reading science books). The only thing that kept me going to the finish was the fact that the entire novel was riding on the subject matter Ebola itself. The virus was what kept the novel going (I actually enjoyed all the factual paragraphs about Ebola...reminded me of the course I took in college! Haha, that, and I like seeing how factually correct Preston was).Overall, it seems like most of his facts are correct (there are a few things that I would contest, but that's besides the point), but honestly, the book was a bore...which is a shame, because it's written on such a fascinating subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to HS for non medical types
Using this text for a distance learning course.Seems to provide a good introduction to the subjects of Health Services.Written on a level I can understand, not being a medical person, but a hospital support person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oddly parochial title ...
If this book is only about the US health service, why doesn't the title say so?There are quite a few other countries out there in the world, and almost all of them have health services!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory overview to the US health system.
Williams and Torrens have developed one of the best introductory texts on the US health system. The book has clear learning objectives, useful references, and helpful diagrams. The American health system is farily andaccurately described, warts and all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
There is a very good reason this series is endorsed by the NPTA.Of the six or so books that I used to study for the exam, this was the most helpful by far.It reviews every topic on the exam, and is a great starting place to see what you need more work on.This is the book that got me a passing score on the exam, and I don't really think I can give it higher praise than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workbook
This book is a great study guide to prepare for the certification exam. The book is easy to read and it leaves out all the fluff that is in the other study books. After reading and doing the practice exams I found what my weaknesses were and was able to go back to my schoolbooks to strengthen those areas. I took the certification exam this month (March) and think I did fine; there are a lot of math questions in the exam and wish I spent more time in that area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This is the book we used for my BSN program Dosage Calculation class and I thought it was great. It starts you from the beginning (fractions, ratios, etc) and goes from there. There is no need for a teacher when using this book, it explains things very well and in a simple, easy to read/understand manner.Excellent for the beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good book for what it is...
As with all economics textbooks and the subject of economics in general, this book is a bit dry. That said however, it's quite thorough in its coverage of how consumers, producers, and insurers make decisions about health and health care.It gives explanations that are rather simple to understand and goes in depth as far as would be considered normal for a 300 level elective course.I should probably note that my instructor is one of the book's authors, so take my review how you will. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very appealing text
Chapters are disjoint at times, with no reference to similar concepts between them.Almost as if they were all written separately without any editing to tie them all together.
4-0 out of 5 stars Health Behavior and Health Education
This book is a must have for anyone in the health education field. It presents all major health behavior theories in a clear and understandable manner, applies theories to case studies at the end of each chapter, and offers a table summary of each theory's core constructs. The book is well written and with this third edition comes more updated research information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a novice
Unarguably, Glanz et al know their theories. That, along with how comprehensive this book is, is as much of a positive review as I can give.My criticism of this book is not the expertise of Glanz et al. (They are quite obviously experienced intellectuals and are to be commended for their efforts.)My concern is:

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for all "emergency heros"
This book is very useful because of its very good pictures and photographs. You can see all important facts at first sight. I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. Intuitive Biostatistics takes a confidence interval approach that should be required reading for all persons interested in statistics. His discussion of basic statistical concepts in the context of interpreting lab test results is clear and informative and introduces the reader to Bayesian concepts that are presented very simply.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Statistics
This book does an EXCELLENT job of translating the formulas and rules presented in most statistics texts into relevant, applicable constructs. It focuses on understanding WHY you use one test rather than another, recognizing the difference in focus between statistical computations and clinical applications, and generally pulls you aside and says, "This is what he really meant to say...."A critical adjunct to assigned texts. ... Where is our nation's health-care system headed in the next decade? And how will we cope with the inevitable collision of rising costs, politics and human needs?
4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Health and Health Care 2010
This is a very interesting prediction of what health care may hold for us this decade.I enjoyed reading forecasts of what the population will be like and their lifestyles, as well as buying habits. Health careers that will be booming were discussed as well as what medical advances will flourish. I found it interesting that this publication does not really predict a nursing shortage as everyone else is predicting. The discussion of insurance plan growth and changes was less interesting to this reader but necessary. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and vapid
If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...
Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers!

I've seen a lot of health care texts and this one is by far the best book of its kind.Very current and thorough coverage of all aspects of health care delivery. This book really shows you how all of the components of the health care system fit together. The author has done a remarkable job and all students in health care and health administration need to read this book.KUDOS!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Fluffy
This book is near 600 pages, but it could be condensed to 300 easily: by cutting back on some simplistic flow charts and over-explanation.Maybe the goal was to make the book readable for the high school level, but I didn't find its style or level appropriate for a graduate (MBA) textbook. One further annoyance was the authors' shameless and open promotion of socialized health care.A more balanced take would give the authors greater credibility. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
This is a very good source for a basic overview. It is well-organized and clear, but it is only a starting point.I didn't have a clue about where to start, so this is perfect for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!!!
I bought this bought and found it very informative. It is an excellent start-up tool and very easy to read and understand. After two year, I still refer back to my book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to get past the Typos
This book was amusing, informative and very easy to read. The author spends much of his time promoting himself as a Practice Manager and offers his help and his advice "by the hour".It is difficult, however, to envision the thought of paying an expert whose own book contains a minimum of 1 typographical error per page.I question the attention to detail and fiscal expertise of someone whose own publication reads like my 3rd graders book report (before editing).Typos aside, the book provided us with a baseline level of Practice Management information and offered a solid introduction to what will be a new endeavor for my husband and I. ...
