5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
As a scientist with great faith---and a survivor of three separate cancers---I came to this book with a lot of faith and treatment experience. This is an amazing summary of the literature relating religion and health. There are many, many associations between religious commitment and practice and health, with major implications for crafting healthful lifestyles and treatment of illness. This book is scientifically credible, inspirational from a religious perspective, and interesting throughout.5 stars only because that is the top star value!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worsley followers pay attention ...
Unschuld is a scholar, a genuine translator that doesn't leave much to the imagination. His understanding of the cultural contexts (as there are many) in which TCM grew are un-matched in terms of written text.Get his books, if not for the honest look he takes at TCM, but for the fact that his works are the bread and butter of TCM.The gross ignorance of the classics among so called "Doctors of TCM" in the western world is amazing.Don't guess about TCM, either learn to read Chinese or get good translations of the classics. Not pocket translations at a American grade five reading level. If we expect people to view us as Doctors, we should study like one.
5-0 out of 5 stars essential reading
This book is the most profound, deep work that has ever been done on this book. As practitioners of Chinese medicine we allways read and give attention to the two books of the Huang Ti Nei Ching, the Su Wen and the Ling Shu. The nan Ching is a must for every Chinese Medicine practitioner. This book gives many aspects that made me think again on theories and practical aspects that I use every day as teacher and practitioner.

2-0 out of 5 stars slow read
From the very first page, I found this book difficult to get through. Not only is it a very dry book, one gets bogged down in complicated sentence structure and undefined terminology. I think this book is probably designed for folks who already know a lot about managed care (see the bios for the two previous reviews). For someone like me, new to pharma, this book just wasn't basic enough to truly grasp the concept of managed care.

4-0 out of 5 stars ...covers the basics in an understandable and logical order.
The book covers the basics in an understandable and logical order...it is well-organized and complete. Chapter 3, The Infrastructure of Managed Care, is very interesting and informative - is very good at describing howmanaged care organizations do what they do. Chapter 4, Provider Networks, and Chapter 5, Purchasers and Managed Care, are very good chapters withgood descriptions of provider networks and purchasing arrangements. (Reviewed by Bernard J. Turnock, MD, MPH, Professor and Director ofCommunity Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Illinoisat Chicago.)

4-0 out of 5 stars ...well thought out and easy to read.
The content of the book overall is well thought out and easy to read.Chapter 1, The Evolution of Managed Care, is an excellent chapter. The Medicaid and Medicare sections of Chapter 5 are excellent. Chapter, 7,Quality of Care, is an excellent chapter--one of the best on quality I'veread.(reviewed by Carmella M. 5-0 out of 5 stars A glass more than half-full?
Given that our vision is so heavily freighted with the moment, ideas of human progress are in short supply lately. Although not an easy ride, economic historian and Nobel laureate Robert William Fogel's survey of the long run, at least in respect to human morbidity, leisure and longevity, provides escape velocity from pressing concerns about war, pandemic, income inequality and the health of the ecosphere. It might be as another noted economist, Alfred Lord Keynes, said in a different context: In the long-run we are all dead. But, the long-run seems to be getting longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good beginning for the study of health
I am studying to be a certified nutritionist and this is the textbook for my first class.I have found this book to be very thorough, yet consise and to the point. The information is pertinent and up-to-date. The authors take a holistic approach and the book covers diet, healthy lifestyle choices, emotional health and well being, as well as important information on body functions. It isn't overly technical (which is nice for a beginner) but provides enough detail. I recommend it as an introduction to learning about nutrition or health. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed for Class
This is a really great book. It is well written and seems easy to follow. IT was required for my Intro to Research class. It will be helpful as well in the development of my capstone/research project for graduaiton.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT HAS A REFINED ANALYTICAL APPROACH
"Designing Clinical Research: An Epidermiologic Approach" did a thorough analysis of various methodologies, which medical scientists could use in everyday research. It, first of all, outlined all the essential steps (used in epidemiological research), before delving into the analysis of each step. Its information is current and versatile. But, certain important issues like research-funding and statistics received less than expected attention. Despite this flaw, I would still recommend this book to scientists. Its pros did exceed its cons by a mile.

4-0 out of 5 stars excessively convenience-oriented book

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly structured, badly written
This and Hartl and Clark's book are the standard textbooks for population genetics. I am an applied math/bio grad student working in this area. Hedrick's book contains a huge amount of information, but honestly I think it is poorly organized and often poorly written. Rather than a clear explication of the theory with examples, it is constructed more like a collection of related ideas, facts and examples thrown together to make loose rather confusing chapters. Population genetics is a tricky subject and Hedrick does not make much of an effort to communicate the ideas clearly. For example, in the mutation chapter, rather than say something like: here is the general problem, here are types of mutations, here are some mutation models with examples, here are some ways to estimate mutation and here are some case studies from the literature, he mixes all these things together presenting formulas and data in an jumbled, intermingled way that is not particularly easy to read. The result is that it is difficult to extract (for me) the essence of the concepts and summarize everything for myself. If you are required to use this text for a class, I highly recommend looking at other resources. Hartl's book's good, but slightly more basic. Gillespe's Concise Guide is also really good, but again, the subject is difficult and requires a good amount of mathematical background. To summarize, if you study pop gen, you should really probably read and own this book because of its ubiquity and the information contained within. However, don't be surprised when you find it sub par.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented and comprehensive introduction
A superbly presented and comprehensive introduction to population genetics as one of the fundamental underlying principles and processes of the evolutionary process, Genetics Of Populations is now published in a newly updated and significantly revised third edition. Author Philip W. Hedrick (Arizona State University) integrates theoretical issues with a clear and acceptable presentation of experimental population genetics with empirical data providing students and researchers with one of the most articulate and up-to-date texts available. Features new to this latest addition is a focus on data from genome projects that compare population samples to identify patterns of genetic diversity and genes that have been under selection. All of the individual chapters have been completely updated with the latest examples and approaches in this rapidly evolving field of study. Of special value for curriculum development are the new and updated tables, chapter exercises, end-of-chapter problems, art, photographs, featured researchers, extensive bibliography, and detailed index. Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars A complete, up-to-date text book on population genetics
This text-book deals with population genetic theory in great detail, without loosing sight of the basics. This makes it a good introduction in population genetics as well as a complete reference work. With chapters onevolutionairy and quantative genetics and numerous examples this bookdescribes the state of the art in population genetic research. Compared toHartl and Clark's Principles of Population Genetics, Genetics ofPopulations is more detailed and more clearly structured. Overall anexcellent book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant introduction to medical epidemiology
Although having graduated some time ago I just keep returning to this well written and crystal-clear undergraduate book on basic epidemiology. This explains clearly also the most basic and important statistical approaches in analyzing data, although leaving multivariate analyses mostly out. However, that might be considered as a virtue as well beacuse the book stays at a very simple level and thus not scare you off it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For any student on epidemiology and biostatistics
One should not be afraid regarding the edition (1987). It is still a powerfull tool for any student on epidemiology or biostatistics. Despite being not a huge book, it is comprehensive enough for students of any leveland perhaps as a companion to established professionals. You can read itpage by page as a novel or search it for details in the planing andexecution of an epidemiological research. The author is well known for hiswork on important trials in medicine and that makes him an expert on boththeorethical and on a practical basis. ...
