Epidemiologic Methods
This book covers epidemiology beyond the basics. It is at a graduate course level in epidemiology. The book is easy to read for the most part. A general knowledge of biostatistics is helpful. The numerous examples make the concepts easier to understand. There are excercises at the end of every chapter to illustrate the topics further. An easy read for those not in the public health field
Ok..So, I HAD to read this for a graduate level elective course. For a political science student, I can say that this is a relatively easy read. Although, explanations of some of the international structures are almost farcical. The book progresses from ancient public health to contemporary which is quite interesting. With a caution, near the middle of the book some terms are not explained as easily, they are merely stated. This is a rather good book but if you are looking to understand American public health-you need an additional book. This book is very expensive, but at least it is filled with content.

a poor book for undergraduate and graduate students
this book does not fit into an undergraduate program. it is much to detailed and quite boring for the undergraduate and most graduate students. this book has content but no deliverance for the masses to comprehend. Outstanding, comprehensive overview of International Health

An outstanding introduction to epidemiology
I'm a doctoral student in epidemiology and I have become familiar with a number of introductory textbooks in epidemiology over the past few years.I think Rothman's book is one of the best of the lot.I found it particularly useful as a bridge between basic introductory textbooks such as Gordis' "Epidemiology" and Rothman & Greenland's "Modern Epidemiology".Rothman's introductory text does an excellent job of selectively covering important topics in epidemiology at a level of detail that is appropriate to its intended audience.The writing style is relaxed yet precise and lucid.His coverage of study designs and bias is particularly illuminating.Some topics such as the interpretation of diagnostic tests and screening are not covered.However, as an introduction to the principles and concepts of epidemiology, the book serves its purpose very well.

Not Bad, Mr. Rothman.... Not Bad.
Rothman's introductory Epidemiology book is quite user friendly in that it is well organized, clear, and concise. Some students may run into some difficulties, however, if they rely solely on this book as their main resource for their graduate level work. Rothman only scratches the surface in some areas, which may be frustrating at times...The book certainly lives up to its title of being "An Introduction." Unfortunately, that means starving graduate students will have to splurge on "Epidemiology: The Body" and "Epidemiology: The Conclusion," if they want to gain a truly in-depth and comprehensive perspective. Unfortunately, these books, to my knowledge, have yet to be written. Nevertheless, Rothman's book is definitely useful for acquiring a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts in epidemiology.

Best conceptual epi book published to date
To my knowledge, this is the best and simplest textbook in epidemiology that has been published to date. I could compare it with practically all the 'mainstream' textbooks that I have been using, more or less recent, and more or less detailed textbooks.

Helpful Information
This textbook provides the future health career student with basic entry-level knowledge required for their chosen profession.It contains twenty-two units ranging from Anatomy and Physiology to Business and Accounting Skills.These units are divided into two parts: Basic Health Care Concepts and Skills, and Special Health Care Skills.Each unit provides objectives and key terms that will be learned from that unit.Each section or chapter is well written with valuable information and helpful procedure hints.This book also contains a glossary to help with confusing terms, appendices including extra helpful information, and an index and table of contents for convenient reading.I highly recommend this particular textbook, I feel it is very informative and helpful towards my future career as a neurosurgeon.

Absolutely essential for introductory students in health occ
I have used this book since the first edition and wanted to kick myself when it came out for not publishing my curriculum and lesson plans at the time. Health Occupations was a new vocational course and most of us had towrite our own material. When Louise Simmers published DHO, we all knewinstantly that she had the best resource on the market. It stands up overtime and each new edition keeps my students current and relevent in thechanging world of health care. Great 2 Volume Set!!!
This two-volume set is divided into two areas -- visual disorders and vision rehabilitation. Each of these areas is then subdivided into chapters in which contributors cover specific topics in depth. The greatest strength of the set is the extensive, detailed review of the field of vision loss and vision rehabilitation. It appears that no area has been overlooked in this review of information. No other text in the field of vision rehabilitation matches the depth and breadth of information compiled here. A good place to start
Mary-Jane Schneider's "Introduction to Public Health" is just what she claims it is - an introduction.The book is a very concisely and clearly-written overview on a range of public health topics such as water quality, epidemiology, and chronic diseases.Schneider divides the book into seven parts that look at the definition of public health, analytical methods of public health, public health'sbiomedical basis, social and behavioral factors, environmental issues, medical care, and the future of public health.The book should be valued not for its depth but its breadth - Schneider does cover a variety of important public health topics but she does not go into great detail.Including a list of resources or suggested reading at the end of each chapter would have been greatly appreciated.However, to Schneider's credit, the book does have cute illustrations and includes numerous charts, graphs, and discussion questions at the end of every chapter.The book is also very readable and isn't as daunting or dry as some other public health textbooks.This book is a great complement to Bernard Turnock's introduction to public health, as Turnock does go into some of the nitty gritty of public health but doesn't cover as many issues as Schneider does.

Truly a wonder
Truly a wonder.Not only is it full of useful information, well organized, thorough, and insightful - it's readable!!!For once, I could not put a book (other than a novel!) down!The author kept my interest alive with the excellent use of the language and the ability to keep even sub-sub-sections organized and to the point.Read more
