4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Biostats Primer!
I'm currently an undergraduate student at Univ. South Florida majoring in social work (BSW). I am also doing a math minor because I plan on going on to graduate school in a dual program, social work (MSW) and public health-biostatistics (MSPH).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Biostatistics by Rosner
This is an easy-to-read volume on the implementation of statistics for medicinal applications. The author describes the following:

People usually dislike textbooks. Textbooks tend to be voluminous and expansive on the simplest of topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
A solid general survey of the US health care system.Provides demographic and comparative perspectives, discusses political and economic policy in a clear and balanced way, plus gives insight into the institutional settings and professional environments where health care carried out.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It!
I am a public administration student in a top ranked gradute program. This book was one course's required textbook and only because the editior, Anthony Kovner, was the instructor. While few students enjoyed the course, no one felt that this book is worth purchase. The only people that I would recommend this book to are foreign graduate students who have no working knowledge whatsoever about the US healthcare system. Otherwise, there are numerous books on the market that are cheaper and much more informative and intellectual. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OSCAR Rated Book
O: Objective
5-0 out of 5 stars Most realistic view of the future of the practice
This book covers the history, evolution, and definition of the future practice of pharmacy. It describes a rational, realistic, and exceptionally well defined view of the future practice of community pharmacy. The definition is backed up by a large scale analysis of data collected using the model demonstrating its effectivness and positive effects on patient clinical outcomes. Topics include reimbusement, documentation and data models associated with the practice. This is an exceptional and cutting edge landmark text that if adopted will change the level of care provided by medicine whereever it is used. HMO's and managed care and pharmacy benefit organizations supporting this model would actually be involved in managing care rather than managing contracts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An eloquent speaker as well as health disparities researcher
Dr. LaVeist is such an eloquent speaker.I had the pleasure of hearing him speak today at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill's School of Public Health. He captivated all of us with his topic of "Problems and Prospects for Health Disparities Research".
5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Corrective to the Turnock position
There are many public health "experts," most notably Barney Turnock of UIC, who spend entire careers re-writing the same vapid books about public health. These authors have a tendency to blithely summarize highly abstract and idealized models of how public health systems should work, rather than analyzing and questioning the ways in which public health systems DO work. And it goes without saying that people like Turnock never examine the ways in which race and economic class determine the availability and quality of health care available - they prefer to believe that these issues have nothing to do with the American health care system.5-0 out of 5 stars Used it in class

3-0 out of 5 stars Dr. JS STEELE -- JUST AN ENGLISH PROFESSOR at A SMALL UNIVERSITY
I recently finished Patient from Hell -- I have mixed feelings about it; I am a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patient just finishing my second course of chemo and Rituxan; I relapsed after three years. I experienced small-city medical limitations, to say the least, although everyone involved tried to help. I eventually found my way to UAB in Birmingham, AL, where I found help of the highest quality.
4-0 out of 5 stars Raises more questions than answers
I have no first-hand experience with the issues discussed here, but I want to be prepared for the day when I will face the Medical Establishment.
2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not at all essential
I ended up with a copy of this book just after I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's, because the reviews and recommendations here suggested that this was an essential text for cancer patients. So I worked it into my all-cancer, all-the-time reading schedule, but I found it only very mildly helpful. Schneider has an interesting perspective on the health care system, and his suggestions about how it might be improved are thought-provoking, so it's not a bad read (although his personal story is not as riveting as it might be, and after a handful of "it's a good thing I asked!" anecdotes, I started finding him a bit whiny). But if you're planning your own treatment for cancer or another condition, don't waste too much time with this book. Read the cover copy and you'll have learned what Schneider has to teach you; now spend your time with something more informative and specific to your situation. (I recommend Adler's "Living with Lymphoma" for anybody dealing with a lymphoma diagnosis.) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Betrayal of Trust
I received what looked like a nicely preserved used copy.
3-0 out of 5 stars promising start but poor finish
If horror writer Stephen King ever suffers from writer's block, he should read this book's opening chapter, where Pulitzer Prize winner Laurie Garrett describes traveling into the plague ravished Indian city of Surat. The description, which belongs more in the Book of Revelations than in a chronicle of modern day health care, is stomach churning. Irula tribesmen are paid to catch the plague carrying rats - and are encouraged to eat their prey. The rats, being the breeding grounds for all conceivable types of plagues and pestilences that they are, quickly turn the Irula predators into their prey. Even as the yesinia pestis bacterium and its bubonic plague cousin were devastating the city, Surat's Aids-racked prostitutes continued to ply their trade. Life goes on, even in the midst of death.

I really enjoyed reading this book, so much so that I assigned it as a text for a course in Issues in International Health. The writing is clear, and the topics addressed are timely and detailed. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book!
This book is really useful and handy. It is very well written and easy to read. As the name stated, it provides very practical guides for those who don't have strong background in Statistics but are dealing with longitudinal data. It is written in an example guided format. The outputs from the analysis and guidelines on how to interpret them step by step are included. There is no heavy Statistical notation and you don't need to translate Statistics into English. At the end of the book, there are chapters of how to handle missing data and softwares used in longitudinal data analysis. This book is probably too boring if you are a hardcore Statistician. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good guided tour of cost-effectiveness analyses
This book was really well-written in that everything was laid out clearly and consistently. I could basically choose my level of involvement, since the author explicitly delineates what each chapter and each exercise is for. The book was especially helpful in helping me choose which statistical methods of analysis would best fit the data set and research question I was working on; no other books I looked up did this in a readable way. Also, what really impressed me is the fact that the book made all the exercises not only seem, but actually feel, easy (or at least logical), and it wasn't until the end that I realized that I had built a decent foundation in cost-effectiveness analysis. The lessons were cumulative, so that the process of doing the problem sets actually felt fulfilling. ... Read more
