Helped me pass the OB/GYN section.
All told it was well worth the money. The cd aspect of it was great , it was the best way for me to learn. That said I was dissapointed that the questions were exactly the same ones as in the book - I really had thought when I bought it I would be getting more of a database to chose from , much like the ARDMS. There was a question asking if the uterus pictured was antiverted, retroverted, etc. and it was a picture of the liver and rt. kidney. But again , it helped me and was a good addition to the (I agree) big yellow waste of money. How was the Abdomen part of it? Don't know , don't care right now either , you only need one specialty and the P&I to be regestered. Good luck to you all on this most difficult of endeavors.

Great text for CNA class

Very useful
This book contains a lot of excellent tables, algorithms and summaries that I could not find in any other review book. It seems to be a great companion while doing review questions. I also found this book to be an outstanding source when I prepared for work rounds to teach the interns and students. I can highly recommend this book to all residents. I wish I had it when I started my residency.

I've been using the First Aid for the Internal Medicine Boards to review IM material during my 3rd year, and I would say that it is very complete. It is more concise than other review books out there coming in over just 600 pages and is very much more affordable. Most review books out there cost hundreds of dollars and are just too long to read more than once. First Aid for IM review is organized by disease system and then is broken down signs/symptoms, differential, diagnosis and treatment. There are many pictures for the diseases it covers with color glossies in the back of the book. The book is full of easy to review charts and mnemonics. There are notes in the margins to highlight must memorize facts. The key to using this book is to study the charts which have high yield facts useful for answering questions and also memorizing the algorithms which can be applied to many different types of questions. When combined with the question book of your choice, First Aid for IM boards provides effective review. This book is short enough, as opposed to other review books, that it can be reviewed several times before you take the boards. When do we ever really remember anything when only reading it once? I recommend this book to anyone that wants a complete IM review in the shortest time possible with high yield facts that helps you answer more questions correctly. ... Read more

Great Textbook for Medical Transcriptionists!
This was the required text for my second subject in Medical Transcription.It was very good and detailed enough for the beginning transcriptionist to understand where everything is, and to familiarize yourself with more medical terminology.This one seems to assume you already have a beginning foundation in basic medical terminology and how to form medical words using word parts, combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes.I say this because the first chapter immediately launches into a LOT of these word parts with very little discussion on what they are, how to do them, etc. The book has a detailed glossary of medical words, though, and it has these little cardboard cutouts that look like miniature index cards (flash cards) that will aid you in memorizing basic word parts.The book has very long and detailed exercises at the end of each chapter that builds on what you have already learned and strengthens your medical terminology foundation.It also comes with a CD-ROM that has exercises relevant to each chapter.WHen you complete a chapter exercise, the software evaluates your performance and tells you where your mistakes are, then prints out a study plan for you where you can bone up and read about your mistakes.An over-all good book! ... Excellent overview
This second edition of Shortliffe's textbook is an excellent overview of the field. Although I used it as a course text, it is extremely readable. The chapters are not overly technical, as befits an introductory text, but by no means is this a "Dummmies" book either. Read more

AWESOME!!
I purchased this review book and studied it along with the ACR. Most of the information in the book was on the registry except it lacked pathology and there were a few errors when you took the practice tests in the book.You really had to make sure you reviewed the answers.I got a 90 a my mammo registry!! I highly recommend this book!! I was a self study and was not able to attend any conferences so my information came from this book and the ACR.

Great Study Guide
I used this study guide and found the questions and the style of questions very helpful for the ARRT Exam.I used this Appleton and Lange Study guide along with a guide from an initial mammography training conference and had no trouble passing the exam.

Good format, watch the answers carefully.
Overall, the review questions were helpful, but there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the mistakes seemed to be poor proof reading, but many other questions/answers seem to directly contradict the text in the same book. That can be very confusing. ... Read more

I will buy it
I am a medical student taking my radiology elective (finally) in the spring of my fourth year.Our department loaned the book to us during the rotation.I've found it to be one of those few books that I will actually purchase to have on my shelf at home (and I'm NOT going into radiology).It is written in a pleasing, conversational manner.The illustrations are of high quality.The discussions are at just the right level for an introduction to radiology.And there are many little "problems" presented throughout the text for the student to puzzle over.The answers are either listed in back, or turn up later in the "conversation" within a few pages.Although it seems long (over 500 pp?), it is mostly pictures.I highly recommend the book.

Errors Galore
After purchasing the instructor's manual to check my answers, I found errors in every chapter!!From spelling to incorrect percentage amounts.I found myself editing the entire time to find their errors which contradict their text.When I got answers that were not an option in the multiple choice exercises, I would reference the book and the textbook would say I was correct, and the workbook did not.Not worth the money or the time.Extremely exhausting.

find something better to learn from
I took a night course which used this textbook. The instructor who is a certified coder and is an instructor at other institutions found MANY misleading instructions. You can be told to do something one way in the book but in real life at a billing job, you would have to do it another way. Also, we found many contradicting statements. They say one thing but do something totally different in their examples. It's really not worth the money.

Great advice (but somewhat repetitive)
This is one of the first books I recommend to tenure-track junior professors and to graduate students going on the academic job market.It should be on the book shelf of every new faculty member.
Mentor in a Box
I am surprised that anyone who criticizes this book as obvious is bothering to read such a book.If it is so obvious, then you are probably one of the "exemplars" that Boice studied to formulate his analysis.Either that, or one of the struggling faculty members he studied, who fail because they are too proud to believe that anyone else has anything to offer.For the rest of us mortals, this book is fantastic. Best advice on writing practices I have read.
Some reviewers have criticized this book for being obvious.I found it anything but.The culture of my field says that the way to write a paper is to set aside large, uninterrupted blocks of time.It was an eye-opening experience to see hard data that show it is more effective to write in brief daily sessions.These writers are roughly twice as productive by several measures (pages written, manuscripts published) and also report themselves to be happier.This idea changed my professional life.Read more

Excellent comprehensive textbook
We are a new program and this atlas was recommended to us highly.We have used it for two semesters and it is not only a beautiful book, but one that the students find easy to use.The radiographs and all other illustrations are the best of all the books we reviewed.We especially like the summary tables of projections, the technique charts, and the anatomy summaries.We like to point out to students that they should be familiar with many of the projections in the text that are not essential since they often are ordered by physicians.Volume 3 is superb with specialty chapters.We use this volume instead of purchasing a specials type book.The surgery and geriatrics chapters are especially good for our students.We like the CT and cross-sectional also because our students need to know CT in many of their clinical sites.The accompanying workbook is very well done also.Our students like the pocket guide that is available because it contains a radiograph and a place to write their AEC techniques.We think the atlas is a steal because we can use it for five different courses in our new program.Our only complaint is that the pages are very shiney and reflect light.MB

Maybe the best
This book is one of my absolute favorites among the hearing research books. It covers all the basic themes and often gives very recent citations. So it is interesting to read that in some tinnitus patients ears the frequency is emitted from the ear! But together with this is the problem of the book associated: it is a little bit short. But all in all it is great to read and a wonderful inspiring book. Highly recommended also for beginners.
