Great reference item. the book is well written and easy to follow. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best A&P books for SLPs!
This book was required reading in my graduate program and I am thrilledthat it was! I have worked in both acute care as well as school settingsand have found this book to be extremely helpful from both ends of thespectrum. An absolutely fantastic desk reference, especially in the acutecare setting!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice (but somewhat repetitive)
This is one of the first books I recommend to tenure-track junior professors and to graduate students going on the academic job market. It should be on the book shelf of every new faculty member.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mentor in a Box
I am surprised that anyone who criticizes this book as obvious is bothering to read such a book.If it is so obvious, then you are probably one of the "exemplars" that Boice studied to formulate his analysis.Either that, or one of the struggling faculty members he studied, who fail because they are too proud to believe that anyone else has anything to offer. For the rest of us mortals, this book is fantastic.5-0 out of 5 stars Best advice on writing practices I have read.
Some reviewers have criticized this book for being obvious.I found it anything but.The culture of my field says that the way to write a paper is to set aside large, uninterrupted blocks of time.It was an eye-opening experience to see hard data that show it is more effective to write in brief daily sessions. These writers are roughly twice as productive by several measures (pages written, manuscripts published) and also report themselves to be happier. This idea changed my professional life.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best
This book is one of my absolute favorites among the hearing research books. It covers all the basic themes and often gives very recent citations. So it is interesting to read that in some tinnitus patients ears the frequency is emitted from the ear! But together with this is the problem of the book associated: it is a little bit short. But all in all it is great to read and a wonderful inspiring book. Highly recommended also for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners
I have been wanting to teach myself to sing for several years, since I can't afford voice lessons, and have tried several books on the subject. This one is by far the best. I first tried books by William Vennard and Richard Miller and found that they were meant for advanced students, not beginners. There are other books for beginners, but they aren't usually meant for classical singing, more for pop (and I find that the authors don't really seem to have much of an understanding of the human voice). I don't know how he does it, but Brown manages to make normally difficult concepts easy to understand. Part of that is because of the CD that comes with it. It helps give a better understanding of what he's trying to explain. I would highly recommend this book for anyone trying to learn how to sing classically.

5-0 out of 5 stars The plain truth about singing.
This book is glorious.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
Wow, I really like this book! As a voice teacher and vocal coach of popular music, students frequently come to me with damaged voices in need of repair. Reading Mr. Brown's stories, I knew I found an author who shared my dedication to healthy singing. Orin L. Brown's warm and direct writing style conveys his true passion for healthy vocal use and his desire to share his great knowledge with both vocalists and teachers. This book is filled with descriptive stories that tell the tales of Mr. Brown's experiences with, discoveries of and solutions for ailing vocal students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Treatment Resource Manual
I have founds both the Assessment and Treatment Manual equally helpful for new and experienced SLP's.As for the review titled "Speech therapy does not work," it is clear that we have a irrational person that cannot see beyond his/her personal experience to see how invaluable SLP's are.We are trained to service many different ages and disorders.Effectiveness of a whole profession should never be evaluated out of anger from an individual experience. However, it is evident that certain support groups are trying to program families into this belief, which is very unfortunate and unproductive(especially for the person their trying to advocate for)!Speech LanguagePathologist are helping their clients daily in the rehabilitation and remediation of skills to help them regain or acquire skills that enable them to function in society. Along with cognitive rehabilitation and speech and language intervention, we also provide dsyphagia therapy (feeding therapy) which certainly helps a client to begin/regain the ability to tolerate certain types of food/textures. This is done to ultimately avoid aspiration pnuemonia, which could be fatal if not treated. This technique strenghthens muscles that assist in eating and articulating. As you can see, our profession is extrememly important.Unfortunately we are not "miracle workers" and can only rehab and treat to the client's ability.A team of advocates, lawyers, or irate family members cannot change this in a person. It is what it is.Maybe the anger should be redirected positively to the person who really needs it, and acceptance should begin. Just then, maybe "real" progress may be observed. SLP's are not rewarded by high salaries, but work and worry about our clients endlessly. Our therapuetic techniques evolve as research does. Keeping an open mind helps people to improve professionally, as well as personally.

5-0 out of 5 stars good resource
This is an excellent resource with descriptions, ideas, examples, helpful hints and age appropirate goals. Not only do you get sample activies but they are very detailed too. They also list additional resources.OH! and example profiles... you can see if one of your students has similar attributes. They have therapy for children, adolescents and adults... what more can you ask for. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference manual and text!
This was one of my very first books in graduate school and it was the key to understanding all of the literature I'll ever need to read. This text fully explains how to break down highly technical research into easilyunderstandable and useful material. Now I feel confident in picking up anypiece of research and knowing whether it is a valid and reliable source ofinformation.I can also apply the same methods to testing materials aswell.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt overwhelmedby research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text on Dysphagia
It is unfortunate that some reviewers of this book hold such a myopic view. I own this book and find myself referring this and other similar texts, such as "Deglutition and its Disorders" by Adrienne Perlman and Konrad Schulze-Delrieu, frequently. Clearly, not all individuals with dysphagia benefit from dysphagia therapy. In my humble opinion, the skills to identify patients who can benefit from SLP intervention for management of dysphagia and knowing what aspects to work on is a result of a good foundation in this speciality, ongoing continuing education, and direct clinical experience. A good measure of curiousity would help as well. Anyone who wants to learn about dysphagia would best benefit from a graduate level course that deals exclusively with the subject. Unfortunately, not all universities have a dysphagia program. Students are often left to fend themselves. I feel strongly that all SLPs working with individuals with dysphagia should attend on site CE classes offered by well known practitioners, regularly. The field is truly very broad, and a comprehensive review of the system from different perspectives definitely helps me improve my diagnostic and therapeutic skills. I find the following websites particularly useful to find CE courses -[...]
2-0 out of 5 stars Another sign of decay in the SLP field
It is another sign of deterioration in the field of Speech-Language Pathology when the person elected to head the national organization in a time of crisis specializes in a medical procedure, rather than speech and language therapy. The field is in danger of losing even more of its focus and credibility than it already has. Unless SLP's concentrate on the core essentials of slp practice and find and refine treatment methods that have clinical research to back up their efficacy, the future is dim. Branching out into medical methods, as Logemann has done, is irrelevant to the serious needs of slp practice today. That Logemann was elected to head our national organization is a bad sign - not because of any merit or lack of it on her part but because the field seems to have no sense of what direction it should have. In the end, it seems to be a battle among three divisions in our field: those who are simply quacks and who are totally unconcerned with efficacy and who want the field to remain on an intuitive and "artistic/creative" level, those who want to rush into medical procedures that have nothing to do with speech and language problems, and those who want to concentrate on the core essentials of the speech and language disorders which our clients bring to us but who want to junk the quack treatments that discredit the field. What happens in the next few years, and the leadership we are given will determine if the field has a future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible informative pocketguide for SLP's!
Wonderful guide and so easy to read.Very concise and easy to flip to the exact disorder you are wondering how to treat or assess! One of the best SLP books I have!

5-0 out of 5 stars I know the techniques work from personal experience
The author of this book also happens to be my speech therapist. I suspect he's been using these treatments on me, and they've been working. To the snake oil guy: if there is any bias in this book, it is towards effectiveness. Unlike mentalistic psychology (believe me, we've had endless arguments about mentalism vs. behavioralism), Dr. Hegde tries to use the scientific method to approach any number of communicative disorders. The treatments are based in the scientific method, and are, by definition, verifiable, repeatable, and emperical. No mentalism here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference
This is an excellent resource for a practicing speech-language pathologist in any setting. It quickly reminds you of all of the things you learned in graduate school, but have since forgotten. It is much easier to look up information here than to dig through all of your old textbooks and notes. I am shocked that Amazon even printed the earlier review giving this text only one star. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Clinical
This book had a few good suggestions for the lay person working with an apraxic child. But for the most part it is directed at the Speech therapist. The tools and assessments are for the speech therapist and not a parent to use.The terms and techniques are very clinical. The two best pieces of advice in the book for a parent or lay person are to use Dr. Suess books and slower music.Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I purchased this book because my 28 month old son was not talking. The speech pathologist narrowed it down to apraxia but would not commit to the diagnosis.Needless to say we were very frustrated. After reading the 1st chapter I felt like a huge weight had been lifted - it described our son perfectly. This book is very technical, I think it is written for someone with a background in this field but I was able to get a lot of ideas from it. His speech pathologist has explained many of the more complex issues. All in all it is a great book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference for the Vocal Studio Bookcase
While I presume that most voice teachers will not find a great deal of new material here, this book is an excellent resource for quick reference. The information is factual and clear, without a great deal of opinion. The book divides vocal faults into various categories, faults related to: Posture; Breathing and Support; Phonation; Registration; Classification; Resonation; Articulation; Speaking Voice; Coordination. Although the focus on faults may appear to be a negative approach, the book is intended for teachers, not students. Highly recommended (for teachers) - this is a book my bookcase wouldn't be without.

3-0 out of 5 stars Faults?
Being a teacher, we are supposed to come up with positive ways to address things to our students. This book "Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults" deals all about the bad stuff to look for in a vocal choir. It seems as though it could be written a little more positively.Being forced to read stuff with a negative mindframe is not my cup of tea! ...
