4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and detailed English phonetics text
After looking at a number of textbooks for a course in English phonetics, I decided to use Fundamentals of Phonetics by Larry Small. The book almost teaches itself. There are hundreds of short exercises that students can use on their own. The answer key at the back of the book covers a vast majority of the learning tools. My task as a teacher is greatly simplified.4-0 out of 5 stars Review of an Applied Linguistics Distance Learner (M.A.)
I found the book to be very well organized and a useful reference. The CD was not as helpful. The author could have done more with the CD, putting more material to get his message across. All in all though, for someone studying G.A. phonology in another country, this has proved to be a sound guide. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Odd
The tapes give good information, but the main speaker of the tapes contradicts what they say!Her voice is incredibly annoying and nasily sounding - I don't quite know how to describe it, but her voice has a very unattractive sound to it and almost sounds as if she has a lipse. However, everyone else featured in the tapes sound normal.I just find it odd that the main teacher's voice is so incredibly unattractive sounding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step
Our daughter has DS and is having some GMS issues. However, this book provides instruction on how to progress to each step toward walking. The therpist we use has began to instruct us on some of these steps, but our daughter has already been through them, so it is keeping her ahead of the game. I've heard a lot about Patricia Winders, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy other books of hers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
This book not only tells you the progression a child with Down Syndrome should follow, it then gives you suggestions of things to work on and checklists at the end of each chapter so you know what your child should be doing before you really move on to harder skills. Wonderful help for both a parent and a professional!

5-0 out of 5 stars The "bible" of physical therapy
Children with Down syndrome often have low muscle tone (hypotonia) and increased flexibility which can affect overall gross motor development. There are many issues that parents need to be aware of if their child has hypotonia. Even the way you hold your baby can affect his gross motor development. This book shows how to encourage and maximize a child's gross motor development - head control, rolling, sitting, cruising, walking, kicking, jumping - from infancy to age six. Pat Winders has written the "bible" of physical therapy for children with Down syndrome. It contains useful information for parents, therapists, and teachers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible for actors and singers too, not just speech therapists!
I didn't realize before I used this book how many things I mispronounced, even though I am a native speaker. This book really helped me work on many weaknesses in my diction. This belongs on the shelf of every actor and singer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for speech therapists
Here is the clearest, must helpful book on articulation that I have ever read. Although the voice section is a bit weak, the diction section (4/5 of the book) contains clear placement information, common problems of misarticulation and solutions, and helpful drills. The judgment calls of the authors regarding standard and non-standard speech are astute. The authors know their material and can explain it clearly. A clearer, more informative text cannot be found. I only wish that they had either expanded the voice section or eliminated it and just accepted that this was a book on diction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking clearly - Clearly written - Clearly helpful

3-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for a child with a language delay
There wasn't much practical information for what to do if your child has a language problem. This book is more a resource for parents with children with normal language development.

The information is straightforward and clearly summarizes the research out there. It's a great resource for all parents, not just those families with language development issues. This book partnered with How Babies Talkby R.Golinkoff, Ph.D and K.Hirsh-Pasek, Ph.D is a must!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration
This book is so very helpful in planning speech and language therapy. The books suggested have been well researched, the plans explicit and easy to implement.I loved this book so much I used it as the "bible" of a group study another speech therapist and I did last year. She had never used literature as extensively as I have.As we delved into the wonderful children's books and how to use them, she found it to be an approach that is fun for both therapist and child, motivating and effective in bringing about significant change in children's speech and language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful language facilitation book!
I am so pleased with this book -it helps me to plan lessons with my speech-language kids by using the children's books that they already know!I get so much help from this source, I don't what I would do without it!I use it with my own child, too.The activities are so fun and creative, there is never a dull moment.Hats off to J. Gebers for giving bothteachers and parents such a great reference tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all educators of children with PDD
This book provides clear, easy to use strategies for teaching and communicating with children on the autism spectrum. The author's contend that behavioral problems exhibited by children with autism are most often the result of frustration that comes from their inability to communicate effectively. Behavioral problems can be successfuly addressed by focusing on what the child is trying to communicate.Rationale for the strategies suggested is provided.I recommend this book for educators and parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to implement methods for enhancing play skills
There are so many books on autism and not all are applicable to our family's situation.I tend to read a library copy before purchasing. When it came time to return this book, I decided that this was one for ourpersonal library. It's easy to read and I will refer to it over and over. Methods are easy to understand and implement. As a parent of an autisticchild, it's one of the few books I've felt that will be invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for anyone working with children with autism

It is very easy to read and deals with a variety of different methods that can be used to deal with just about any level on the autisticspectrum. As a speech therapist working with variety of children withautism, I continually return to this resource to help plan my assessmentsand intervention. 4-0 out of 5 stars Overall Great but...
Overall I think this is a great book. It is one of the few out there that doesn't try and pretend that you should be signing exact english and does a great job of introducing you to the grammatical structures of American Sign Language which are definitely different from English.
5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching a 20 month old
I just started teaching my 20 month old daughter how to sign.I knew quite a few words but not enough of the simple ones.I went looking for a book to help us. (We are both hearing) I found this and couldn't be happier!!! We have been doing this for 5 days and already my daughter knows 7 words.I picked up quite a few more just by looking through and highlighting ones to show her.I would recomend this book to everyone expecially those who are working with babies. These are signs they can use for life.I love being able to understand what my daughter wants without having to play guessing games, which she doesn't like!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's good for 'getting a feel' for the language
If you've got the basic vocabulary down and you want to move away from pidgin signed English to using more ASL type language, this is a very helpful book.He goes over the basics (again) but presents the information in a holistic way that takes into account the way the Deaf community see's itself and the little things that happen in everyday conversation.I think I especially enjoyed this book because I have not had access to a lot of formal ASL training, and it covered the basics in a way that helped me understand more deeply why it's important to do things in a particular way. It's also a very friendly, direct book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First book written concerning interpreters and education
Ms. Seal has put together a valid and worthy book about the need for changes in how interpreters are trained who will be interpreting in education environments. With the push for inclusion and placement of deafand hard-of-hearing children in public schools, it is more than about timethat someone wrote concerning the need for more intensive training ofinterpreters to keep up with the knowledge base and subjects that arerequired in school. In a situation where information is receivednon-directly from the teacher, if the interpreter doesn't know orunderstand the subject, faulty information is given to the student. Yetwhen the student makes the mistakes on testing because of misinformation,it is they who must pay the price. This is not a funny subject, but sinceI've been through college with a variety of interpreters with differentabilities, I understand of what Ms. Seal speaks. In a neuroscience medicalclass, an interpreter who was hired because he was cheap and had nocertification, misinterpreted the medical term 'olfactory' as 'oldfactory'. That was bad enough for an adult, but to give that type ofinformation to children on which to base continued learning would be acrime. This book should be read by all those in special education and thosetraining interpreters throughout the U.S.--it should definitely be requiredreading, and I plan to use it in future teaching and recommendations toscience teachers through out the U.S. Karen Sadler University of Pittsburgh ...
