5-0 out of 5 stars A Functional Approach Just Makes Sense
Perhaps the biggest challenge facing speech language pathologists when working with their clients is getting them to generalize the newly-learned language targets to novel contexts. After all, what good is speech-languagetherapy if the client does not use the skills outside of the therapy room? Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a student's perspective
This book contains a lot of information for the beginning/intermediate learner of motor speech disorders. However, is not very easy to read.It can be dry and more wordy than need be.

4-0 out of 5 stars solid reference for beginning speech language pathologists
duffy provides a solid and straight-forward depiction of the more prevalent motor speech disorders.the most important function of the text is to provide a solid foundation in differential diagnosis. most of thedysarthrias that present themselves are of the mixed variety and duffyprovides the reader the essential tools necessary in recognizing the signsand symptoms. clinical experience needs to provide the rest. theneurological sections were presented from a different perspective than whati had grown accostomed to in my studies, but a different approach wasappreciated. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational...
A truly inspirational book and a must read for any Stutterer looking to examine the reason behind their blocking. Focuses on the theory that blocking is primarily cognitive and examines the root of the beginning of the stutter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Opinion
Very interesting and useful book. I think it is a must read for people who stutter. You will get a completely different view and understanding on stutter. I think your speech will definitely improve after reading this book and applying methods from it. Also would be very useful for speech therapists.

1-0 out of 5 stars no advancement!
There were no ideas that were not developed by the 1960's in this book. There were a lot of stereotypical 'war stories' of stuttering. The old mantra of self-esteem, which is being proven scientifically false over and over, is trotted out and delved into at length.Additionally, a lot of work is spent on relaxation technigues, coupled with manipulating the way you think about things (called framing in the book).Basically the author encourages one to 'get over it'.There are some slick new acronyms such as PWS (the person who stutters!!!) but come on...no advancement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
My son is 28 months old and has very little speech. He also has a problem sticking his tongue out and using his lips.It was if he just couldn't figure out how now matter how hard he tried. We tried practicing in a mirror and many other things.I didn't have much hope for this book but I figured it was worth a try.Well when we got it he began trying to stick out his tongue to the side just like the picture of the boy on the cover!I think the pictures of other kids help to motivate him and because the pictures don't change like a video. This enables him to be able look at the picture and try to mimic no matter how long it takes him.GREAT BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for all preschoolers
This is a great book for all preschool kids whose oral motor skills are still developing.I am a teacher and a mom with a son who has articulation problems. We do the games and activities as a family and all of my kids ( ages 1, 3, 5) enjoy doing them.Speech therapy is really expensive and I was happy to get this guide to augment what the therapist is doing.I'm sharing the info with my son's preschool teachers and they love it too.Theactivities are simple, easy to understand, and use things you have around the house.Hats off to Ms. Orr.This is a must have for all preschool teachers, and the parents of any child with even mild articulation problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is excellent! It is especially suited for both preschool teachers and teachers who deal with smaller children with mental disorders. I reccomend this book to any teacher of small children, as well asintersted parents. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a book you must read to be a expert
The book is not written for beginners. It offers keypoint concepts of the basic balance physiology and the vestibular funcion tests. If you are ever puzzled by the conflicts ofthose results in vestibular function tests and can't figure out which test or tests to relay on during your clinical evaluation, you would feel wonderful after you read it . You must read it to be a expert but it certaintely isn't your first book .

4-0 out of 5 stars The Practical Management of the Balance Disorder Patient
As a first year graduate student in Audiology, this book, at first glance seemed like an impossible read. The writing is extremely dry and medically based. After finally getting through the first chapter, the rest seemed tobe significantly easier. All in all, it has been an extremely informativebook and will be an important addition to my permanant referencecollection. For anyone interested in the testing and diagnosing of balancedisorders, this is an essential read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference
An excellent resource for any medical professional involved in caring for patients with vertigo or unsteadiness. The approach is clear and concise, with many sample cases. This is the only text I've seen which provides alogical, stepwise and complete approach to the difficult task of diagnosisand treatment for this group of patients. The included normative data wilbe very helpful for those just starting to build a balance assessmenttesting program. ... Read more
