5-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Medicine: Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition
This book is a must. Its useful for any person who practice in the ER as well the outpatient. Is very good for general reference. The book give a review of the problem with a management oriented to the adequate level of care. Cover
4-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent learning tool!
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it.The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy.I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Downward Spiral on Autopilot
*Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability.Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Primary Step 1 Resource
There is a reason this book is ubiquitous among students studying for USMLE Step 1: it gets results. It contains a section giving advice for studying for the test, high-yield facts and figures for the subjects, and reviews of other resources. It is a great value for the price.
3-0 out of 5 stars A good place to begin
Having just taken the Step 1, I have to say that I am considerably less enthused with this book than most everyone else. It does do a good job of reviewing the basic points and some of the associated details. However, I found that quite a few items on my test did not appear in First Aid at all, and that overall the level of detail was insufficient. I was also using QBank and BSR and altogether they still failed to include enough material on courses taught in the first year, specifically pharmacology and cellular pathways, which were heavily emphasized on the exam. So while this book is definitely a nice point to jump off from, it could use some heavy updating.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need - nothing more
This book lives up to more than its title has suggested. Its extremely high-yield contents are all you need (you wonder how they know all these). Read it a few times and memorise it all (if you can) and it's a slam dunk! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
This is a terrific book. It's written at a very basic, reader-friendly level. Likewise, the information is presented in a logical, organized manner. Also, the Student CD-Rom contains tons of extra resources, that really helped me master the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for all "emergency heros"
This book is very useful because of its very good pictures and photographs. You can see all important facts at first sight. That is very good for people who want to review things they have learned some time ago. So that's why I think this is a very good book, not only for all "real" first responders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ACLS Study Guide 3rd ED
I love this book! The author sounds exactly like me...scared to death to take an ACLS course.I have just started using this book but so far it has helped to calm my fears/anxiety. I also have the American Heart Association book, but this one explains things very basically for those of us not in critical care and/or have no critical care experience. It gets to the point in an understandable way.I would recommend it to anyone!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as First Aid for Step 1
I was very disappointed with this resource for CK prep. I found Step 2 secrets to be far superior. I purchased and read First Aid for Step 2 CK based on my positive experience with First Aid for Step 1. Much to my disappointment, First Aid for CK contained quite a large amount of basic information that just isn't high yield on step 2. For example, the basic ins and outs of ECG. On the exam, pertinent ECG findings are usually given, and then you're asked to make a clinical decision (e.g. next test or step in management) based on the ECG findings and other data presented. Step 2 secrets is a much more clinically oriented review of material for CK. WARNING: don't rely heavily on First Aid for CK or you'll be disappointed. USMLE world and Kaplan Qbank are probably the best review resources out there, with review books serving as supplements. Unfortunately, First Aid for Step 2 CK was not very helpful. See my review of step 2 secrets, as I consider it to be the best text resource (remember, only as a supplement to online question banks) for CK. I'm not bashing the First Aid series because many are very good books. For example, First Aid for step 2 CS is right on the money (see my review of First Aid for step 2 CS).

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I agree with other reviewers. It doesn't come close to the usefulness of Step 1. It contains too little information considered high yield in the exam. Definitely not to be used by itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not essential
Unlike the step 1 First Aid book, which was simply phenomenal (not to mention vital) for studying for the exam, the First Aid for Step II CK was a so/so text. It's fairly long, and wasn't as concise or as targeted as the step I book, and took more time to really study it and attain the same degree of comfort that I had after reading the first one. Some of this could be accounted for by the sheer scope of the examination itself. Not only does this cover all of the core specialty rotations (and a fair amount of subspecialty info as well) that you will be exposed to as a 3rd year clinical clerk, but it also needs to re-cover a good portion of the step I material that has been delightfully repackaged (i.e. those yummy glycogen storage diseases that you thought were gone forever.... think again! This time, they give you the vague clinical presentation, and then ask about the enzyme).

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's just me
I really didn't like this book, and I'm not sure if it is just the topic that I struggled with or if it was the text.I had a tough time reading the book...I didn't like the blank lines to fill in the answers, it seemed distracting to me trying to learn the information and having to stop and fill in the blank as I go along.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, simple, and simple!
I have to say that this is the best college text book I have ever used. Clear, concise explanations of semi-complicated topics. I could not ask any more out of a book, except maybe lowering the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars How "Basic Arrhythmias" helped me in paramedic school.
I was an basic and intermediate EMT for years.Intimidated by learninghow to interpret and analyze EKG's, it was, by far, one of the mostfrustrating topic for me in paramedic class. My instructor recommended the"Basic Arrhythmias" book by Gail Walraven and in no time at allinterpreting and analyzing EKG's became easy and soon after I was doing itlike a second nature.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing reference guide.
This book lays out everything you need to know in a concise, easy to follow format. If only it wasnt so friggin gigantic. So whether you need to run to the office to brush up on a procedure you havent attempted since your second year of residency or you need something heavy to bash the hell out of a Ganglion cyst (please dont actually do that), this is a great tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for anyone interested in emergency medicine
I am an EMT working toward a degree in nursing or PA. I saw this book being used in the ER at UVA Medical Center and had to have it. It has been a great learning tool for me. I would recomend anyone practicing emergencymedicine to add this book to your library.

This new edition of a classic text is essential for the busy emergency physician. Not only does it give clear instructions for performing procedures, it also provides relevant information about pathophysiology.Indication and contraindications are explained.Numerous helpful tables assist in the interpretation of test results. This book is much more than a how-to manual, and no emergency department should be without it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A reviewer
I used this book as my primary source...i read it twice before the exam. the cases are amazingly close to what you will get in the exam...trust me... you do not need a course, all you need is the first aid!!!!!!!!!!!!! any other sources can be used as a way of reviewing what you have already learned from that book. trust me you know the content of this book, you are one step ahead of the game.
5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to pass CS!
This book does a great job of describing the exam format, rules and content. You can easily pass the exam using this book alone. In fact, a few days with this little gem before CS is what most of my friends and I have done for preparation. The consensus is that we ALL felt very comfortable with the simulated patient format based on what we learned in First Aid alone. Of all the cases I had on the exam, only ONE was not specifically covered in First Aid for CS. Don't waste time with other books/resources. I was somewhat disappointed with First Aid for CK, but for CS...it's right on the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 book for Step 2 CS
This book was excellent for the exam. It told me exactly what to expect and what I needed for the exam day. The cases in the back of the book where almost verbatim of what I saw on the exam. Reviewing specifc physical exams and specific questions for a particular chief complaint was very benefical. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good study book
This workbook is a very good study tool for paramedic school. I would recommend every student to purchase this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wishy Washy
I found this book helpful in some aspects, but it definetly condradicts itself all over the place. In one place, it says that neonatal compressions are to be 5:1 and in another place it says 3:1 - as for my class tests, my teacher used the test manager that came with it, AND we learned 3:1, so I knew that was the answer, but nationally, when I write my certification exam, I dont know what they want to see, because my text book didn't teach me much!It was really easy to look up definetion and the algorithms were good and such...as well as the pictures from actual (or simulated) paramedic calls. But as for the contradictions and spelling mistakes, I can't give this book a very good rating.I highly suggest you invest in another book, it just isnt worth buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Paramedic Care....Tragedy, or Not?
Well it is true that I have found a few typos already, and that was in the first few chapters. However, after reading the reviews I can show you quite a few typos. This book is good and it was the book of choice by my Paramedic instructor, because he wanted a book that was writen by a real medic, not just a former medic that is now a realestate agent.Anyways, even if the book has errors in it, remember that the most important instruction tool along with your book is your INSTRUCTOR, and how he or she instructs you.The book gives great concepts, knowledge, and how to apply those both to the field. I believe it will be a great preparation for lectures and where I can bring up questions to my instructor. You can't blame your not being prepared for the National Registry test on a book, it is based on you. Here is my advice, if you have a problem or question from the book."ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR ABOUT IT."They are the ones that will set you on the right track, That's why Paramedic courses aren't independent studies.Anyways, I believe when I get done with school I will be ready to hit the streets.I believe this book will help me get there, with the help of my instructor of course. ...
