4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful guide.
I found this book very helpful. It started by going through the PA profession, and then got into how to actually go about making this a career. It explains each step of the application process, and gives very helpful tips.Overall, this was a great book.I would highly recommend it for anyone considering entering the PA profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but outdated
I found the information about interviewing helpful but much of the information about the application itself was outdated. The book was written before CASPA was widely used. Also, the author provides a personal website and encourages readers to contact him with any questions, but this website is no longer around. This book is a good cheap purchase, but no substitute for advice from current students.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book for any aspiring PA prospect!!
I purchased this book the summer of 2005 to begin my "preparations" for entry into the 2006 application cycle. I had aquired all of my prerequisites for the program I was interested in and wanted all of the ammunition I could get my hands on in preparation for the interview process. This book gave me perfect guidance in all aspects of the application process. And if I can do it, OH MY!, anyone can do it!! (If you only knew me ten years ago!) Although I do have a few years of medical experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist under my belt, I applied to only ONE school this year and I just received the call last week for the acceptance! My first go round and I couldn't have asked for more. As competetive as most medical programs are this book, I believe, gave me THE edge to succeed. I can't praise the book enough for all of the insights this book includes, From written preparations to speaking patterns and interview scenerios. A year ago I was sitting in the same chair you were wondering if it was just a crock. Buy it! It is the cheapest book you'll purchase through your entire program. What do have to lose? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Saunders Pharma ceutical Word Book
This Word Book is WONDERFUL, and definitely should be with anyone doing medical transcription! The format makes it very easy to locate drug names, and even note briefly what the drug is used for.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drug reference for Medical Transcriptionists
This book has everything.I know that after I check my other resources, the internet, and this book, then the drug will not be found with the description provided and I know I can leave a blank without fear of being accused of doing an incomplete job.Other transcriptionists that I have worked with highly recommended this book before I bought it so I already knew I was getting the best.I cannot wait until the 2007 version comes out on CD ROM.

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
the seller send the book very soon but she give me a wrong one, and then she send me another one, but it was lost in the way. Although she returned my money, but I took a course two weeks without textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars 7th Edition pulls itself into the 21st Century
Having had to wait many weeks for the new, revised 7th Edition I was very pleased to note the improvements made from the 6th Edition. The color examples, universal legend symbols and easy paragraph read for the student are excellent. Another long awaited addition is the expanded Medi-Cal section (applicable to California only). Having been in the industry for 25 year I can say that this is the best Billing book on the market that I have been able to find. The only down side to this book is that it is not written for the "new" biller, but more for an intermediate to experienced biller. As long as the instructor can "dumb down" some of the excellent explanations, students will learn a tremendous amount from this book. I use it in my classroom along with my own material and the students are leaving the class with a well rounded knowledge base. Over all, I am pleased with the new Edition and it's contents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info, perhaps too much.
I felt a little bogged down by all the information contained inthis book.It seemed too detailed and included a lot of stuff thatdidn't really apply to just medical insurance (for example thecomplete hypocratic oath which doctors take)! Overall, it was a pretty good book. It would have been a great book if they had cut out about a third or even half of the information.I thought Guide to Medical Billing, by a company called ICDC was much better. A lot of the pertinent data without too much extra.I also liked a book called The Medical Billing Handbook by Jason Cummings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book as foundation for medical microbiology students
I used this as one of my required texts for my microbiology class in med school. It had very good sections on parasitology, viruses, etc.It was fun learning the what parasites are endemic to certain regions of the world and what symptoms they cause.I was used the following: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This second book was great because it was thorough in the aspects of test preparation in these various ways: it helped me prepare for the type of questions asked by my microbiology professor. In this way when I was studying I knew which facts to study harder and to know better.I easily got in the top 1% of my medical microbiology in grades with the help of these two books.I give each book five stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much information
This book offers a very comprehensive look at microbiology and virology(with some immunology and parasitology thrown in); unfortunately, that'snot a good thing if you're trying to study from it.The chapters are fullof information on lab values and other minutiae that will be of interest toonly those who make a living in the field.Otherwise, you'll have tosearch hard to pick out the relevant details that are worth remembering. There are definitely better, easier to use books on the market than thisone

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, yet comprehensive sytematic approach to bioethics
Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth aclear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a reviewof his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and thenreviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions.Hisapproach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process fordilineating issues and conflicts.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.
The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features. Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics. I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine. --Mary Kay Buike, MSW, ACSW; Oncology Social Worker and member of a hospital Bioethics Committee ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
I have been a transcriptionist for three-plus years, and I have owned this book for all that time.I honestly cannot recall a single time this book has been helpful. It is a small volume, for a medical word book, being about the size of a thick popular paperback novel, which is wholly inadequate for the monstrously huge field of medical words.5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for newbies to med trans!
When I first started transcribing in 1980, the first edition of this book was my bible. When I was lost in a black hole of unintelligible doctor-mumble, being able to narrow the terms down to groups of specialties saved the day for me. Now, after 23 years as an acute care MT, I teach full time at a community college and I require this book for my transcription students. Ellen Drake's meticulous edits and additions have at least quadrupled the page count and made it a trustworthy reference. I must admit, though, that as an experienced MT, it would not be the first book I pulled off my shelf when stuck on a word now. Now I usually firstturn to the latest edition of Stedman's, the Drakes' latest pharmaceutical reference, or to a word book with extensive terms in a particular specialty. That's because the Medical Word Book is more like a text version of an experienced MT's brain. So I probably wouldn't recommend this for an "old" MT like me -- but newbies will LOVE it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for interns
This was my reference of choice when I was an intern at a busy major children's hospital. It's comprehensive, not too heavy to lug around, gives you the important details and gives you references as to where to go next for further reading. It's not always enough information when it comes to specific cases.I usually went to UpToDate, PedsinReview or lit searches at that point.I think this is a solid book to have early in your career because it lets you cover the most relevant material in a readable manner. As a second year, I don't go back to Currents as much and mostly go with articles.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for medical students, less so for those beyond.
this is a well-written, decent source of information that I feel is geared more for medical students than residents. Its purpose is to familiarize the reader with common and well-known conditions and basic treatment definitions, along with basic epidemiology. It is not a one-stop reference for diseases, however, in that it will not go into detail regarding treatment including dosages and often time course of treatment; discussion of pathophysiology is quite limited.it certainly is unnecessary for a medical student to know whether to treat with high-dose vs. regular dose antibiotics, or whether single vs. double coverage for a given infection is more appropriate.but it would be much more helpful to your resident or attending to have such information in a reference book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for Simbryo and as a reference
This book is our text for Embryo. You can learn just using it, I guess, but only if you don't place much value on your time. You are much better getting a copy of lippincott BRS embryo, reading that to understand the concepts, using the included Simbryo CD to reinforce them (Simbryo is excellent!), then reading Langman for detail/additional reinforcement. The book is terse and poorly organized, but it provides good detail that you probably won't get elsewhere. Use it, but don't expect to learn from it efficiently unless it's augmented by a detailed lecture or some other material.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 5 stars are by mistake ... 3 top's !
First, it is much more thorough than any the other embryology books. Second, it is much less understandable.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good

5-0 out of 5 stars Credit to my account
Dear Amazon,
5-0 out of 5 stars If you've seen the movie, now read the book
In this book you will hear from Vivien Thomas himself. As wonderful as the movie was, it did take some dramatic license here and there.Vivien tells the story of the first "blue baby" operation very matter of factly. As you read the book you will discover that he played things pretty close to the vest.He was not one for dramatic outbursts or fits of temper.Thomas is a dignified quite man and his relation with Dr. Blalock was not all sweetness and light but they worked well togehter and became very close.
5-0 out of 5 stars The true expression of brillance
The story of Vivian Thomas is one that every student in the health professional field should study. The simple elegance of his surgical ability combined with his ability to critically think transcend the commonplace notion of traditional medical school training. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than the essentials
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I would not suggest this book to anyone...
Please don't waste your money on this text.I had the misfortune of having to use this text to teach certification reviews for the July 06 exam. Luckily all of the students passed but I would attribute it more to their prior pharmacy knowledge and the additional information I gave them from the APhA texts than this book. The typos were unacceptable!!! I realize mistakes will get missed on occasion but how can a text claim 3/32 = 1/8 on the front page of a chapter?I was primarily teaching the math section and thought this book did a terrible job of explaining things. If math is the area you need to focus on do yourself a favor and by the Complete Math Review by APhA instead. This book was written strictly like a textbook which doesn't promote the practice most students need. The APhA text was written more like a work book which I really enjoyed as did my students (I also used it when I just wanted to briefly look over things before taking the exam in 2003).The work book format of APhA makes it a lot easier for students to skip over sections they have already mastered by providing frequent practice problems you can check yourself on.The pharmacology section in the Delmar text was pathetic as well. The information was out of date and incorrect (Nexium is a capsule not a tablet!!!)The top 200 medications list in this book was organized poorly also. I used numerous sections of APhA to supplement the Delmar text and the students loved the way the APhA material was presented in comparison.Basically my conclusion would be that if you want a text with tons of typos and way more information in textbook format than you need on the exam...use Delmar. If you just want a quick refresher (or even a crash course if Math if it isn't your strong point) that just presents you with what you need to know please use the APhA texts (Complete Math Review and Complete Review).

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent overall prep for PTCE

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!
I am taking the CMA exam this month and have my Associates Degree in the field. I borrowed this book ftom a student who started school before I did. The text book we had was not near as informative! This text has everything you need to know! I am purchasing it for my own reference because it was so helpful. I highly recommend this book to all Medical Assistants!

1-0 out of 5 stars BIG FAT SCAM
I'd give this book negative five stars if I could. Save your self a lot of money, don't buy this book, don't take this class! The medical assistant technician programs are all a complete scam created by tech schools to make lots of money off unsuspecting students. I see about thirty commercials everyday boasting about how hot the medical field is right now and how easy it is to get a job. According to the commercials "The Hospitals and Nursing homes are understaffed and are just hiring people like crazy." None of this is true. I am a licensed C.N.A. and have a degree as a medical assistant.I would literally sell it for twenty dollars right now. My degree is worthless. I've kept in contact with almost every student I graduated with and most of them have given up looking for employment as a medical assistant. I have applied for at least fifty jobs so far. Out of those application I've been asked to do two interviews.
