From veterinarian and pathologis

Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile.The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update.Although this is the third edition (1998),almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters butagain far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating. ... An amazing book
It is just unbelieveable.The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. Ideal for MT & MLT students
Little story - I never was taught hematology in a way that was understandable. I had to memorize a lot of stuff for exams. Once I began reading this book, light bulbs were turning on in my head; I began understanding reasons for various hematological disorders. Where was this book when i needed it?Anyway now that I have found you, I promise i will never sell you off! SH (ASCP) here i come!
One of the best med school texts
This is by far amongst the best medical school texts (not incl. board review stuff) out there. The 4th ed. covers all areas of hematology in a lucid, non-verbose style. I found it easy to read assigned sections for my Heme course in a timely and efficient manner. There is a good blend of pathophysiology and biochemical mechanisms essential to understanding disease processes; however, the presentation is straightforward. The text has frequent color cartoons, images, graphs and tables, which helped me visualize concepts. Moreover, modern diagnostics and treatment rationale are also adequately explaned. Overall, I am really glad i purchased this book, and plan to keep it for future reference.

Good Medical Text
This was my medical school textbook for a four week module on hematology. What I liked most about the book is that it only presented essential information. The absence of superfluous text allowed me the time to regularly read the assigned chapters while also studying the rest of the material for this class and other classes. I also found the book to be relatively easy to comprehend. (However, this is definitely not on the layman's level, and a good requisite knowledge of a first year medical school curriculum is necessary before reading.) Virtually every pathologic aspect of hematology is covered in the text: hemopoietic development, anemias, lymphomas and leukemias, coagulation disorders, etc. It also covers some treatments for the various diseases and pathologic processes. A great start for the AST.
As a student myself, I found that this book is highly readable, but oftentimes, the text and layout feels cramped as though the editors were attempting to place every single chart, picture, graph, and piece of text on as much square area for each page.
Great educational book
I actually work in Central Sterile Processing. I found this book very useful with the information of surgical procedures, anotomy charts , surgical instruments. Plus it is very clear on its format, easy to understand and follow. This book will answer many questionsthat students going for surgical technology need or simple just like me, a person who works with surgical instruments on the daily basis.

Helpful for quick checkups both as interesting just for leafing through
In every well equipped lab this book shouldn't miss. Especially for the beginner in practical work, there occur several situations in the lab in which some of the chapters can turn out to be quite useful. Whether you can't remember the calculation for the concentration of an RNA solution from a measured OD or want to look up how to perform a presentation of your data, this book can help you a lot. With the author's casually interspersed amusing comments it makes even rather delicate and easy to mistake topics as lab courtesy and behaviour in case of a mistake fun to read. The literature list proposed by Kathy Barker matches with what I found useful to read during my first years in microbiology. Altogether, the fact that this book is one of my most ragged and accompanying me from lab to lab speaks for itself.

Good introductory material
I wish I had read this book when I started off on my scientific career.The book provides the broad exposure to a wide array of routine laboratory social culture and techniques without losing the detail which makes such reading meaningful.Even if you have newer or different methods than those provided in the book, reading the book will give you an appreciation for the early methods to which researchers will often refer.This will give the beginner a framework upon which to expand their understanding of the laboratory.

A Must for Graduate Students
There are so many things that classes don't teach you!This book can instantly teach the new laboratorian things that experienced laboratorians know but won't share such as: whether to autoclave or filter sterilize or how to be approach someone for help.A lab is full of volatile things the most dangerous of which are the other workers!If you've ever made an experienced lab person angry when you've moved their equipment or borrowed their reagents you'll understand how helpful this book is!

The Board of Registry Study Guide is a great study helper. I have been using it to study for my weekly exams.

Great review book!
This book has definitely helped me get a good idea of the kind of questions that will appear on the actual registry exam.It is also helpful in the sense that it answers some FAQ's about the exam itself so that you know what to expect when you take the it.

Good Reference

Use this book as a doorstop
This book is not for the beginer in blood banking.It is disjointed, confusing, difficult to comprehend, and does not flow in a logical manner.It was written by several authors, including Harmening.This probably accounts for the confusing flow.May be helpful to experienced blood bankers, but if you are a begining student trying to fathom the many intricacies of blood banking, this book will make you want to tear your hair out.Without a doubt, the worst text book I have ever read and I have a master's degreee and 1.5 years toward my PhD.Avoid this book like the plague unless you have prior knowledge or experience.It will turn you off blood banking forever.I give it a D for effort (a poor and poorly edited effort). ... Invaluable tool for becoming productive and efficient in your research lab
This is the book all grad students should read because this book discusses the things that you typically don't learn in grad school.The book is meant for new faculty, but anyone interested in learning practical lab management issues is encouraged to read this book.There is something useful in this book for both green rookies and experienced veterans.
Fantastic for the new professor
I love this book and only wish it was published when I was first starting a faculty position.Definitely a biologist's perspective (and a lab-oriented one at that), but it covers many of the trials and tribulations of starting a new faculty position: setting up a lab, assessing priorities, making hires, managing committees, managing colleagues, etc. Don't be caught without it!

Excellent overview
This second edition of Shortliffe's textbook is an excellent overview of the field. Although I used it as a course text, it is extremely readable. The chapters are not overly technical, as befits an introductory text, but by no means is this a "Dummmies" book either. Read more

Simple and to the point
Excellent book for beginners.It is simple and to the point without waffle.Beautiful pictures with good resolution.
Great descriptions and pictures
I like this book for blood cell maturation pictures and descriptions.I really like the spriral binding for ease of use.The only complaint that I have is that it does not use all three origins for describing the cells, even if the infrequently used names were in parentheses, it would be better than eliminating them entirely, i.e.Proerythroblast (pronormoblast, rubriblast).I had to write all over the book including all of the naming conventions, so I thought they should have been included.
