Review on Children with Disabilities

Excellent resource
This reference book covers developmental, clinical, educational, family, and intervention issues of concern to teachers working with children with disabilities. Written by doctors, it thoroughly explores issues than impact child development starting from conception through adulthood. Factors that can cause disabilities, current methods of treatment, commonly used medications, and guidelines for intervention are addressed. Solid Introductory Book
Batshaw's Children with Disabilities is a "must have" book for anyone who works with children with disabilities...almost.Written by doctors for those in the medical professional most of the recommendedinterventions come from a decidedly medical model.It is, on the otherhand, fairly comprehensive with sections dealing with genetics,development, developmental disabilities, and interventions with the bulk ofthe book dealing with specific disabilities from the obscure (Fragile XSyndrome) to the more common (AD/HD).I have not found Appendix A or Bparticularly useful (Glossary and Syndromes of Inborn Errors of Metabolism)but turn to Appendix C and D frequently (Commonly Used Medication andResources for Children with Disabilities) Finally, while the book offers anice mix of theory and application, I would like to see (maybe in a 5thEdition?) the incorporation of some of the so-called "new brainresearch."Nevertheless, I still turn to this book several times eachmonth. ... Excellent resource for care givers!
In reviewing this book, I discovered it is an excellent resource not only for professional care providers, but for family members as well. There are very detailed examples of specific activities to do on a daily basis, and could be easily adapted for varying levels of dementia.

Excellent book, at least someone did something right
Every now and then I read a book about some parents that goes and hires a specialist to do a parents job for them. This book is probably the best example I've ever read. Simply put, we've got a couple of inept, frustrated parents who obviously have no clue how to emotionally raise a child, hiring a specialist to do the work for them. The problem I have, is that play therapy is what the parents should have been doing. By ignoring the child, never playing with him, emotionally interacting, etc, the parents just let him deteoriate. This book is a classic example.
Encouraging
To me, after reading the book, Dibs seems like a bright kid with parents who had no idea how to raise a child and didn't teach him any normal social skills.He just needed someone who would listen to him, give him undemanding attention, and provide a safe environment.And he got this with the therapist who wrote the book.Then he felt safe coming out of his shell and beginning to interact normally with the rest of his world.He doesn't seem autistic to me at all; he seems frustrated and afraid of doing things wrong.I liked the book.I found that the therapist continually echoing people was a little irritating after a while, but that was her technique, and seemed to work well.

Very helpful guide!
This is a very good book to use to study for the exam!I used this to study for the NBCOT exam and found it very helpful.The questions were similar to those used on the actual exam, and the answer sections were full of valuable information.Not only did you get explanation of the right answer to each question, but the book also gave you information on the other answers as well.There is also a really good mix of types of questions - from intervention, evaluation, to program development and management type questions.Very comprehensive, and I felt it really prepared me for the real exam.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book
This book was an enormous help in my passing the NBCOT test. They explain all the answers, both correct and incorrect. The questions are formatted very closely to what you'll see on the real test and they provide you with the exact reference of where the test answer came from so you can pull out your textbooks and read up on that section in further detail.

Practical Art Therapy
Usually these types of books are theoritical (for example why art therapy works) while this one is practical with many activities to work with.

easily understandible
Having found myself a little out of depth as regards people needing release from pain and stress, I have found the practicality of this book invaluable. It has opened my eyes to understand a lot more of the history of art therapy, and the exercises are helpful. I found the pictures included also enable one to grasp some of the concepts within the text and the layout of the book makes it exciting reading.

The bible of physical dysfunction
As an OT student, I've used this book more in clinic (rehab settings) than any other text I own.It is an invaluable reference for manual muscle testing and goniometery.Trombly carries over from class to clinic with ease, and I've even had OTRs borrow it during my fieldwork.
