This is an excellent read for any acupuncture student, practitioner or enthusiast!Deadman's language is poetry. The points come alive when reading this text!
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Deadman's A Manual of Acupuncture
Not possible to find a better English language reference source than this book. I have used the book in hard copy but prefer it on CD. Quick to find items using CD and a notebook and CD weigh less that the actual manual. The pronunciations that come with the book on CD seem accurate, depending on the area from whence your Chinese comes. Good background data for all point locations and rationale for their use.

Editorial Review

The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapyhas been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations. 4-0 out of 5 stars Okay, But...
This a good trigger point therapy workbook, complete with "rubberball" tools, but the problem is, once again, this therapy is being touted as the "be-all-end-all" approach to pain management and health.Trigger point is a modality, a bodywork modality, and needs to be recognized as such.Just as massage, reflexology, and shiatsu are modalities, there needs to be a line drawn so people don't confuse this with a health book.Gangi's book does much better in defining our path to balanced health, and also redefines therapies such as this one so people aren't confused or misled. High on the list because it's used in massage schools, but not the best for people wanting to find the cause of their pain, and then dealing with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book for Me
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook is founded on Travell and Simons' research, but it's Travell and Simons LITE.Sixteen-hundred pages of difficult medical language have been reduced to a concise, easy-to-read 323 pages, while retaining all the essentials of trigger point science.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'Trigger Happy'
Feel a sore "knot" in your neck? Back? Leg? Then you likely know trigger points. Headaches? Sore back? Hip? Then you likely know trigger points. Why not get to know them better - and help them move out! The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook clearly explains trigger points, how to locate them, and how to de-activate them. There are well over 100 muscles identified (including pronunciations) in this book. The delightful news is that you don't need to learn them all (or how to pronounce them) before you begin! Thanks to the smartly-designed illustrations and easy-to-understand guidelines, you can begin the healing process right away! Being a colossal skeptic, I am hesitant whenever I encounter an exaggerated claim...but here goes. This book has actually changed my life! And I'm confident it will continue to do so. Within two days of using this book, I felt genuine relief from my long-time companion: pain. As a great believer in the "patient, heal thyself" approach, I have tried many remedies over the years - including massage, reflexology and accupressure. I continued the search. I was aware of trigger points and some of the mischief they can cause, however, it was not until I came across this book that I actually understood trigger points. This book has changed my life - and I'm thrilled to have found it! Can this book change your life? Yes. Will this book change your life? I encourage even the most skeptic of skeptics to give it a try. You will be glad you did. Mr. Davies and his daughter, Amber, have given us the tools to help us help ourselves heal. They note on page 45: "You deserve to be pain free. Give yourself this gift." It's in your hands - literally. A piece of advice...get yourself a good highlighter. You'll want one. Happy healing!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book of veterinary acupuncture that I know that it is for sale for the internet.
It is a simple and easy book of understanding, of the way that the students, in the course beginning, need to understand the Chinese medicine, mainly the acupuncture. But for an acupunturista he is also very useful, because it serves as much as a study book and of headboard as of fast consultation, in spite of his size to turn it a little difficult to transport. But I always drop it off at my clinic and I read it whenever it remains a time. Each reading that I do learns a little more. I already possess there is him two years and I still didn't get to read it entirely. It is the book that more has been contributing to my learning as acupunturist. I recommend and a lot to all that are interested in the subject: Chinese medicine and veterinary acupuncture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good primer
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with information!
Very thorough book on veterinary acupuncture. It seems intended for veterinarians which may make it hard to digest for the lay person. The theory is very well explained, the chapters on history and studies are informative and the illustrations of points charts are excellent. It lacks on the practical side though. It gives you general knowledge but does not go deep into how to do point selection in relation to your clinical findings.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis Volume 1
As a medical professional, I have an interest in what works to bring health to the system. At times, alternative medicines when appropriately applied, in the hands of the right people, ones trained in health care and disease, can offer stimulating results. But the question of how to obtain reliable material to diagnose and treat a disease remains a current issue. This book helps bridge the gap between Chinese diagnostics and the Western approach to disease.Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis provides visual illustrations of various ailments, mapped outwardly on the tongue, and includes written descriptions and symptoms. When applicable, it correlates the topography of the tongue to Western disease. However, the book is not all inclusive. It lacks treatment.I would suggest a companion, Radiant Health by Ron Teeguarden.Teeguarden's work covers portions of the ancient Chinese art of health and offers a treatment program designed to correct deficencies and disturbances in Qi.The two together provide a reliable source for a medical professional to understand and apply the basics in Chinese medicine.I highly rate this book when accompanied with Teeguarden's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent atlas of tongue diagnosis
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in Chinese tongue diagnosis. The book is divided into sections according to pattern (Kidney disharmonies, Stomach and Spleen disharmonies, etc). Each section contains approximately 30 full-color, well-photographed tongues representing the pattern. This makes it easy to see the range of tongue signs for each pattern. Also, the description of the tongue, the patient's symptoms, Western diagnosis and Chinese diagnosis are printed next to the photo of the tongue for easy reference.(You don't have to flip back and forth between the text pages and the color plates, as in Maciocia's Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine.)This book isn't cheap, but the quality of the photographs and the clear description of the tongues makes it a very worthwile investment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the Auriculotherapy textbook
The 3rd edition of Auriculotherapy Manual by Terry Oleson can be used as a standard textbook. In my view, this is a highest praise in the world of acupuncture with its differing approaches and disparate methods. Those differences are necessary, I must add, as it is the nature of acupuncture to depend greatly on personal needs of the patient and abilities of the practitioner.
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book for the experienced
There is no doubt this book is comprehensive, combining a variety of different styles of ear acupuncture in one book. There are lots of diagrams of ears showing you the location of the different points of the different styles, which can be a bit overwhelming and confusing for the newcomer. If you are experienced in this field and/or need to know this level of detail on ear acupuncture, this is the book for you.If you just want the basics of one form of ear acupuncture, I suggestgChinese Auricular Therapyh by Bai Xinghua (Scientific & Technical Documents Publishing House; ISBN: 7502322612), which is a good standard for Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners.

4-0 out of 5 stars A true east-meets-west medical model
Terry Oleson's Auriculotherapy Manual is the mostcomprehensive text on the subject. If you are practicing Auriculotherapy (a system of ear acupuncture) or intending to do so, this manual is a must-have.This edition is a vast improvement over the previous, which was difficult to use.The new edition is certainly not easy to use, but it's an improvement. The subject is deceptively complex.Just sticking a needle in someone's ear is not Auriculotherapy--there is a level of understanding required to use the system effectively, and using a medical feedback mechanism is essential.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This looks like fraud
I did this treatment for my son with Autism. We went to a local practitioner and paid about $125 per hour and it did not work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does NAET work? Evidence to the contrary.
I'll keep this short because the book is well reviewed by others. You must go to a licensed practitioner of this art to receive treatments ... dozens of treatments. If you are persuaded by this book, it will still take your faith in the writer and endorsers to embark on a series of treatments that will take many hours of your time and thousands of dollars - with no warranty expressed or implied, if you know what I mean.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Voluminous (only slightly flawed) Mainstay
This book got short shrift in our education even though we bought in in the first year or two.4-0 out of 5 stars Still a worthwhile reference
When I was in college, we learned the ill-fated Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion for exams, but this was the book we actually used in acupuncture classes. We called it the "Shanghai book," as it is an abridged translation of a four-volume set, originally published in Chinese in 1962 by the Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, revised in 1974. Since most of our teachers were from Shanghai, this book was the favorite for teaching English-speaking students.Read more

The information is a good overview of the business side of things. 5-0 out of 5 stars FIve Stars Seems a bit much but let me explain ...
I have been training in TCM most of my life now.The thing about a lot of these transations is that people often make assumptions based on grammer ECT ... about what these books are worth ... my Chinese is OK ... but I don't have perfect grammar and most Chinese respect that. There is a bit of Chinglish in this book, but it is definately read-able.The books from the mainland are usually the ones with the clinically tested, and/or properly translated point selections and combinations.Giovanni's and Deadman's Point Selections are INSANE, most of them make NO sense from the stand point of properly trained traditional Chinese medicine, get this book for the point cominations if anything.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not all bad, but there are alternatives
I was given a copy of this book when I signed up for training courses in the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It isn't all bad, and I learned a lot from it.The problem is that one can learn so much more from other texts such as Maciocia's Foundations of Chinese Medicine and Deadman, Mazin and Baker's A Manual of Acupuncture. This book tries to be comprehensive, but it is, at times, incomprehensible. For example, Maciocia's writings on TCM Syndrome Differentiation is much easier to comprehend than the equivalent chapters here.In fact, I found myself studying Foundations instead of this book for such topics as the 8 principles. This book also assumes too much.It does not recognize the fact that most westerners cannot readily grasp the marked differences in western and eastern philosophy.Again, this is a topic that Foundations (and Web that has no Weaver) covers much more excellently.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinically useful
As precise as Deadman on point location, but also fleshed out with some clinical notes from the author's personal experience. A very useful little reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have in any Acupuncture Library
Shudo Sensei is a true gift to the Acupuncture community. It is rare to find and acupuncturist with such great skill and even more rare to find one who is willing to share his information and personal experiences so openly.Shudo Sensei provides a practical look at points which are commonly used and explains proper needling technique, location and indications. He still stresses the need for a proper root treatment, but also provides "symptomatic" uses for points, along with stories of personal experience.Steven Brown does an amazing job translating this book and makes me think that his skill as a translator is only matched by his abilities as an acupuncturist. If you want your acupuncture treatments become more effective you must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true master
I have been fortunate enough to attend a seminar with Shudo Demei and his ease, technique and understanding of acupuncture blew me away.I highly reccomend this book to anyone who wishes to improve their abilities as an acupuncturist.Shudo Sensei fills the pages with alternative point locations, alternative uses for common points, case histories, and clinical experience. The information in these pages can be found no where else as Shudo Sensei himself has based the majority of this information off his many years of clinical experience.I must also thank Stephen Brown for his great work in translating this book. His translation skills are matched only by his skills as an acupuncturist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped others as well as myself.
I first purchased this book in the fall of 2002, and proceeded to travel across the country in 2003 to accompany my sister to receive NAET treatments for both of us. Using the techniques, we have been able to help other people to understand the healing benefits of both the NAET treatments for allergies and the Living Pain Free treatments to save from many trips to a doctor or the hospital. Many have requested their own copies of this book, which I was able to acquire for them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated and lots of symptoms covered
I recently purchased both this book and "Say Good-Bye to Your Allergies" by the same author. This is the much better book - actual information on treating particular symptoms, rather than an extended apology for her NAET system of allergy treatment. The only thing that I really found more distracting than helpful was the use of medical terms when navigating to particular pressure points.I've read several books on accupressure, and this is the only one that requires a decent knowledge of 'Gray's Anatomy' to understand much of what she is saying. The illustrations go a ways to helping that, but I couldn't escape the feeling that the author was trying to make sure that readers knew she REALLY is a medically trained doctor.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Self-help book!
This is an excellent self-help book. Page "58" is very helpful to overcome immediate allergic reaction temporarily. On the very first visit, Dr. Mala taught me how to use these points. Every morning when I wake up I massage these points before I get out of bed. That gives me tremendous energy all day along.During my initial NAET treatments, I was advised to massage these points every two hours. That helped me pass my treatments without any unpleasant reactions. I love this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
I attribute much of what I do in practice to this book. The text is very readable and the information is presented clearly. If I were allowed only one book on acupuncture, this would be the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrutable
My interest in oriental medicine is serious and long-standing, although I have not had the chance to study formally at an established school.Ancient texts are seldom available in translation and can be extremely difficult to understand when they are available. Many of the more modern texts are quite dogmatic.Like second-rate cookbooks, they may give varying results for the home cook.Shudo Denmei's book is a wonderful gateway. It gives a very understandable "big picture" view of acupuncture as it developed from its origins to the present time.It gives extremely practical ways for a student to begin both study and early clinical experience.Without translation from theory to actual practice, no such book is worth anything. This book is the most practical I have seen at making this transition to clinical experience possible. So, this is a wonderful place to begin. On the other hand, the author also outlines very clearly at least one respectable path to mastery of the higher complexities of acupuncture practice. The text can, then, guide a person through long stages of improving practice. There are other wonderful books (consider, as an example, Dr. Manaka's book), but I know of no other text that is nearly as helpful or as practical, particularly for a person like me.I have great desire, but I don't catch on easily. Thanks to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book is excellent, which makes me wonder what the heck the last reviewer was thinking. This book doesn't have point location errors...I am a certified acupuncturist and I can assure you this book is not only accurate, but Bruce Pomeranz uses Western methods to validate the use of acupuncture in the mainstream. Many people don't like his "anatomical" method of relating the acu-points, but for Western trained health care professionals, it is much easier to integrate into practice, sell to patients and to explain using science than the traditional Chinese medicine.Let's face it, the Chinese knew what they were talking about 2000 years ago (or more!) but they explained it in a way that made sense to them.Well, we're a bit more scientific now and explaining the results we get with a bit of science may offend some, but it is progress because we are integrating old style wisdom with new understandings.

5-0 out of 5 stars too many errors; not enough substance
This book looks very professionally done, but the content is less than adequate. There are location mistakes on the diagrams, and the information on the individual points is too condensed for any real practical use. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for beginners
Caroline's review is true, but this book was not what I expected. It describes only some selected points after showing all points on a full human picture. That is why it is not for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A quality book
I was a bit dubious about buying this book as I have a lot of books on acupuncture already and no one had reviewed it.The reason I was considering it was mainly because of the ear acupuncture, which is often not covered in much detail in mainstream acupuncture books.Anyway, about a year after looking at it (since it was always popping up when I was browsing), I took the plunge - and it was well worth it.Read more
