5-0 out of 5 stars Review of the CD Rom
I bought the CD hoping I could have the information on several computers.I have had the book for 10 years.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK ... but not the colour on the cover ...
I initially dove into this book, very well laid out and attractive but don't be deceived it's not the be all of diagnosis despite it's mammoth number of pages. As far as I've been trained, he's about 70% of the full story ... definately a wonderful introduction to TCM's internal medicine but not everything you need to know. His appendix pages on western differentiation are very welcomed, but are quite basic. Many people in TCM are not so interested in Western meds. but they are very important so thumbs up on the inclusion.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag
This book is huge, even though it's only about 34 diseases. It's filled with case studies that easily transform into CA state board test questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Re-Read Pericardium-6, "The Wild Card"
This is the clearest text I have found on Chinese Medicine. So many of the large volume texts require an experienced eye to sift through and discern what is clinically useful and what is merely interesting information of no clinical use.In Art of Acupuncture Techniques everything appears to be useful.Although the book is not large in size, it is large in the author's knowledge of medicine, reflected in its comprehensible use of language and succinct presentation, containing more clinically applicable concepts than many other books.
5-0 out of 5 stars simple book from a brilliant doctor
I took johns' acupuncture techniques class in SF last year. Among all the teachers and doctors I have known, johns has the deepest knowledge of acupuncture, and more importantly, the greatest amount of skill hands down. Watching his technique makes you understand how little knowledge and skill has been passed on in the post-communist "traditional" chinese medicine era. Although its difficult to learn the correct technique through a book alone, the basic principles and guidelines are clearly depicted.
5-0 out of 5 stars Johns's deep understanding of medicine comes through pages
Robert Johns has a knack for being able to boil complex concepts down into simple, understandable language without missing any pertitent information. This text is easy to follow and contains important information. All the information in this book comes from his own clinical practice, so it's only here because the perscriptions actually work for him today, not becasue he read it in some ancient text.Read more

Editorial Review

Bridal Counselor Sheryl Paul offers a thoughtful alternative to "bridezilla," the perfectionist bride who acts as if a flawless pricey wedding will ensure a lasting marriage.Instead, Paul uses a workbook format to invite each woman to become "a conscious bride"--one whose pre-nuptial preparations include both emotional and practical to-do lists. The key is working through the ambivalent feelings that surround each tangible task. And here's the payoff: "Working through uncomfortable feelings while planning a wedding is an opening to joy—-an opportunity to be fully present." Each chapter pairs a practical task, such as choosing a location, creating a budget or writing wedding vows, with an emotional one.For example, in one brilliant section, the practicality of making a guest list is paired with the emotional homework of grieving for lost loves and tackling the need to please. Paul's approach creates a fascinating hybrid of anthropology (using a theory of rites of passage) and depth psychology (acknowledging the shadow side of every wedding.) She then packages these insights with a kicking set of charts and checklists. Though targeted for brides, it is not for women only. Powerful exercises urge couples to align every decision to reflect their identity as a couple. Some brides may object to a walk on the dark side of their wedding plans. But in Paul's capable hands, counsel about fear and loss, florists and white satin dresses co-exist without sounding like Dr. Phil meets the former Martha Stewart. Her advice is fresh, highly practical and optimistic. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great resource
The Conscious Bride wedding planner is an insightful, organized and invaluable resource for any bride. It covers the deeper areas of preparation for your wedding day with just the right touch. It helped me clarify my intention for marriage and create just the right feeling and look for my wedding that was uniquely my own. I would have never been so prepared or calm or joyful without having worked through this planner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for information, but not organization
If you already have Sheryl Paul's The Conscious Bride (a must-have, really), this planner may be a bit redundant. While the information is very helpful, it's basically the same information as The Conscious Bride, and it doesn't provide as many of the organizing resources as other planners. Most brides would do well with either the original book or this planner, but both may be emotional overkill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Planner
This planner is perfect! It helps you to stay focused on what your wedding is really about by discussing not just the practical but also the emotional aspects of wedding planning. It acknowledges that a wedding is a rite of passage and just the beginning. This book will help you arrive at your wedding day feeling calm and ready with simple reminders like, "It's not about the dress!" This is a great book for every bride who wants a marriage and not just a wedding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An ingenious new syster for using Bach remedies
I was intrigued by the title of this book, as I have used Bach lower remedies in the usual way for many years. This book is clearly a labour of love.It is beautifully written and produced. It provided a new perspective for me on the remedies. It is accessible to lay people as well as practitioners. It is one of those books that I would consider buying multiple copies to give to friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for people who use flower essences
I use Dr. Bach's Five Flower Formula, a.k.a. Rescue Remedy, on a regular basis and love it.I've been learning more about his different formulas, and I am also getting my degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. This book is a great combination of both.Pictures show you where to best apply the flower essence, and which essence works best.I think this is a wonderful collaboration of two alternative healing modalities, and is worth giving a try.I'll be experimenting on myself. This is also a great resource for acupuncturists who have patients who cannot be needled, offering another way to stimulate energy in the meridians.

3-0 out of 5 stars Promsing, but needs work
Craydon and Bellows' "Floral Acupuncture" attempts to combine the time-honored tradition of acupuncture and the seventy-year old flower therapy founded by the Welsh physician, Dr. Edward Bach. Beginning with an overview of Bach's flower essence treatment, the authors proceed to summarize some essentials of the Five-Element style of acupuncture. Application methods are then explained, and the book concludes with its longest chapter discussing the relationships between the flower essences and their corresponding acupuncture points.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference guide
The complete acupuncture cd-rom is not for the beginner. The acupuncture demonstration on video was interesting. It showed how to insert the needles and how moxibustion is used. The talk on acupuncture answered basic questions about acupuncture, such as, Is it safe? How does it work? How often do you have to be treated for a symptom? The CD teaches you what needles are used, how to insert them, how to use moxibustion, possible accidents you might need to be aware of and more but it explains each subject only briefly. It sections off all the channels of the body and explains where they are in text format which I feel for a beginner is too hard to understand. It would have helped if they gave you the point combinations for a particlar condition and showed a picture with the points being used. Also, the diagrams of the bodies with the points shown on them was a bit blurry. On the plus side, the CD does offer 534 acupuncture studies to research. It also contains a handbook for ear acupuncture on the CD, giving you points for many conditions. All in all, it trys to cover everything you need to know about acupuncture, but covers it only briefly. It is a good reference CD, but I need to buy another book to have a more thorough understanding of all the points. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a necessity
I love this book because it is small but has so much in it. I know I will read it countless times to make sure that I have absorbed every detail. It will definitely be helpful in my future practice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another view
Very limited in the numbers of points used. There is no conceptual or methodical explanation for the points selected. Very interesting that she uses the same treatments for multiple ailments.I have no regrets in reading and purchasing this material. But then again, I read everything on acupuncture that I can get a hold of. It shall remain in my acupuncture library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Special Book
This is indeed a special book.Miriam Lee shares here insights into how to treat people in a busy acupuncture practice with minimal effort and maximum results, yet at the same time ensuring each patient is given quality time. The author covers treatment of common health problems in the West such as depression, allergies, asthma, diabetes and obesity. This she does using a core set of points which are mainly the 5 Shu (transport) points of the meridians and whose functions she explains with remarkable clarity. The book is a true inspiration for both beginning and experienced acupuncturists. Miriam Lee shows us not only how to heal patients, but also to consider our own intention as healers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference on Oriental Meridians
I was really surprised to see so many negative reviews for this excellent book. I can only imagine that the writers were expecting a book teaching them the art of Pressure Point fighting, and while there is a brief section on both healing and martial arts applications in the book, this work is really about the Meridian and acupoint system of the human body, and it succeeds brilliantly as such. Also to be commended is the author's excellent overview of Western Anatomy and explanations of how Eastern and Western concepts mesh. The book is packed with info, mostly in the form of charts with short explanations.Certainly, you aren't going to learn everything there is to know about TCM, but what a great reference! As an Asian style bodyworker,I love this book. It's the best one I've found yet on Oriental Meridians. It is very straightforward and the Meridan charts are first class. The quality of this book is also first rate: nice stiff pages that read well and will hold up to a lot of pawing and page turning. Buy and study this book to learn the "whats" and "wheres" of TCM. Then find a Master to learn how to apply this wealth of information. This book WILL show you where the points are and how the different points and the meridians affect the body as a whole.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough martial arts content
I think that the title is a bit misleading. This book does have lots of good information compiled into one source. The problem is that it is more of an anatomy book than a martial arts resource. There are good illustrations though I do not think that there is enough depth or analysis in the surrounding text. Discussions of meridians and pressure points are more suited to acupressure/acupuncture students than to martial artists who are the target of perhaps 10% of the content. There is almost nothing, for example, about how martial techniques work from a bio-mechanical perspective, nor how applications affect the body medically. If you want a good overview that compares and contrasts Western and Eastern thought it's a decent reference, but if you want an in-depth study suitable for serious martial artists this is probably not your best resource.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not so essential
A very misleading title and description for this book. Other than some very basic western concespts of anatomy (you got them in the 8th grade), this book is good for little more than it's thorough coverage of the meridians, which comprises more than 80% of it's content. ... Read more
