5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on chiropractic philosophy
This book is excellent because it tells why adjustments are given--to correct subluxations. It talks about innate and so forth. However, sometimes it's a little scary how some members of the chiro profession worship B.J. and D.D. Palmer.Forms of adjustments have been around for thousands of years from the Romans, Greeks, Chinese.Yes, I know, they were not specific, they did manipulations.Anyway, chiropractic works, it has been working for thousands of years in one form or another. However, it works greater now because now it is specific--targeted to removing nerve interference and correcting the subluxation.I also, highly recommend.5-0 out of 5 stars Chiropractic First of Portland, OR recommends this book.
Here at Chiropractic First, LLC in Portland, OR we love this book. We encourage our patients to read it and to increase their health care knowledge about Chiropractic. 5-0 out of 5 stars For open minded people
If you're locked in the "medical model" of treating sickness and disease, you probably have no interest in chiropractic or any other "alternative" health care system. So, this book won't be for you. But if you are looking for a better way to approach health and wellness and want an easy-to-read introduction to chiropractic, this book is excellent.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is one of the books in "Back Pain"that any spine care specialist should read. I personally feel fortunate to have done it. Six years ago, after finishing reading it( the 3rd edition, 1992), I was basically converted from a GYII physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Resident with little interest in taking care patients with low back pain, because of the lack of knowledge and skill,to someone who started considering a career as spine care specialist. Now, I am a fellowship trained spine interventional specialist, board certified by the American Board ofPhyiscial Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as by the American Board of Pain Medicine, practicing interventional pain management and spine care at the Physicians' Pain Specialists of Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. I am very thankful for this book because it helped me in moving the most important step towards becoming a spine care specialist. The authors did a superb job integrating things such as history, physical exam, spine mechanics, spine impages (X-ray, MRI, CT) together with clinical correlates. It is such an rewarding experience after reading this book to realize that I have achieved the ability to coorelate the spine image findings in X-ray, MR or CT with its spinal anatomical structures and then infer them to their specific clinical presentations. Most of the Chapters were well written, especially those on" Pathology & Pathogenesis of Low Back Pain", "The Site & Nature of the Lesion", "Lumbar Spine Imaging", "Differential Diagnosis of Low Back Pain", "The Three Phases & Three Joints" were extremely well written and informative. It has more lumbar spine images than any other spine care books that I have come across.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work!
This book has become one of the foremost referenced text for healthcare professionals on the causes of low back pain.It helps the reader to understand "Structural Findings" on x-rays/MRIs and to correlatethose with "Functional Findings" of restricted flexibility andsoft tissue pain.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great practical book for osteopathic physicians.
This is a great practical book for the osteopathic physician.I use it frequently when caring for hospital patients. While it has sections on various types of diseases (upper respiratory, GI,etc.) Dr. Kuchera also hasa basic outline on how to use osteopathy in any sort of disease state. This means you can take the basic philosophy and apply it in any situation. I highly recommend it to all osteopathic physicians and students ofosteopathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text on Osteopathy in the field of visceral diseas
An excellent and very welcome text on the important role Osteopathy has to play in the treatment of visceral disease. By explaining the relationships between viscera and the Autonomic nervous system, the authors have been able to recommend an approach and treatment plan for many common visceral disorders. For any Osteopath who has a desire to explore the full power of Osteopathy and be confident in treating such conditions in their clinic, this book is a must. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book to own - if you do some of the exercises everyday, you'll feel the difference.Of course it's also handy to have around for when you just need to get rid of a pesky backache once in a while.I bought lots of these and gave them to people I cared about who often had back problems - that's how much I like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK stop being a cash cow!
I have been seeing chiropractors for 20 years now. Between my insurance company and I many thousands have been spent. Immediatly after an accident a chiro is needed. Once you are in the 'maintenance' mode they are NOT needed. This books shows you the simple maintenance manipulations that are safe and easy, including the ones on the neck. You must buy the video that supplants this book. I live in Alaska where a simple 2 second treatment costs $50. What a racket! Stop being a cash cow and take control of your spinal maintenance and buy this book! You don't see a doctor for a simple headache? Why see a chiropractor for a simple adjustment? I adjust my brother and my wife and they adjust me. We have been doing the maintenance adjustments following the methods of this book for 8 years now and feel fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time this knowledge is available to the public!!!
This is an excellent book. As the author notes a number of people try to adjust their spine by "popping" their back at home. They really don't know what they are doing, just that it feels good. Why not show them the correct way to do this. After all it's not rocket science. I have had the book and video for several months and have never felt better. Not only am I able to stand and walk longer, I also sleep more soundly. My wife's back-aches are a thing of the past. It has improved our health and well being immensely.
1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Stupidity Made EZ
Sure, a brief book and video can teach you to twist someone's neck pretty well. But only someone with the least possible respect for the principles of chiropractic would publish such a book.If you injure neck or back, there are plenty of "home remedies" that you can try to help yourself out before seeing either a chiropractor orMD, but spinal adjustments should NOT be one of them!It may look simple on the surface, but there is quite a bit of skill in determining the correct vertabrae to adjust, the proper angle and line of force, as well as the amount of force to be used. These skills cannot be taught from a book...they must be learned from experience.Chiropractic students spend hundreds of hours supervised by professionals before ever giving their first adjustment and even then they are supervised in clinic for hundreds of hours more.

1-0 out of 5 stars A basic text
This book is too basic to be of much use for long. Just get it out of the library or make notes in your technique class! A couple of good chapters, but not worth sitting on you're shelf unopened - as it will after about month two of a chiropractic course. 5-0 out of 5 stars History you will need
I bought the book in order to be prepared for my med school interview but never got it quite read.I found out upon my arrival at school in the fall that the book was a required read for my History of Osteopathic Medicine course. The book is a great resource to make a person more familiar with an ever growing branch of medicine; that there isn't just a world of MD's.And who knows, maybe it will get you a bit ahead of the game for your first class in your Osteopathic medical school :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough
As chairperson of the social medicine department at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Norman Gevitz knows firsthand the details of ostepathy. This book is a thorough, well-written review of osteopathic medicine's climb into the medical arena; originating from the depths of the mind of its founder, Andrew Taylor Still in the late 1800's, into the growing profession of the 1980's.Unfortunately, however, it does not cover the growth and expansion of osteopathy in the last twenty years of the 20th century. It does explain, though, the legal and social struggles that osteopathy survived in its first 90 years.Gevitz also does a wonderful job explaining what ostopathy is and how it evolved from a holistic, drug-free approach to medical care into an alternative, legally licensed medical practice.I highly recommend this book for osteopathic medical school applicants. It is also an excellent book for those interested in the history and sociology of medicine in the United States.
