3-0 out of 5 stars I'm on day 9...
And I'm not impressed.Never again! This has been torture.I'm more energetic when I wake up in the morning, but that's about the only positive.I admit I made some modifications: used reconstituted, bottled lemon juice, for two days I had just water, and one day apple cider.I'm going to keep going until day 10 just for the sense of accomplishment.Anyway, I've been trying to clear up my allergies and skin problems, and so far this has not seemed much help.I don't know, maybe it has helped but I don't realize it.Next I'm going to try using oxy-powder to cleanse the gunk from the colon in a simple, non-torturous way (just have to take some pills) and also do a series of gallbladder/liver flushes. My point is, the Master Cleanser is just one part of detox-ing: it is a kidney flush, but one would be well-advised to do a liver-gallbladder flush right afterwards. This book has helped many people, I'm sure, but so far my experience has told me that it's not for me.I'd only do this again as a last resort. Here are some helpful sites: curezone and [...].That's just my opinion. To all the people out there struggling with health problems, good luck, and don't give up, and don't let the conventional medical industry fool you into assuming there is no cure for whatever you have, and don't let irrational skeptics sway you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good program
I did alot of research on this clense before i started and made a commitment to try it.I sort of eased into the diet by having 1 small meal a day consisting of organic spinach salad. On say 2 of the wean i experienced a terrible headache but i honestly believe that after 20 years of drinking pepsi with everything- this was simply caffeine withdrawl. Those who make it sound easy will fool you into failing. The lemonade will give you what you need, but after a lifetime of eating you will definately crave food.It will get easier but never easy. You have to commit yourself.I compare this to quitting smoking which is my next task.
4-0 out of 5 stars How often do you take food for granted?
I once heard on a health program that most of us have 'stuff' in us (in our intestines) that's at least two months old!Wouldn't that be great to remove all of that gunk residing in your intestines and toxins in other parts of your body? The Master Cleanse was a great way to do it for me.It was a bit challenging because I *love* food, and just not eating was such a foreign concept. But the drink is pretty tasty and I felt all of its cleansing effects. It's easy to tell that this book was written half a century ago, though the content is easy to digest and intriguing. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it tries to convince the reader to stay away from animal and animal-derived foods once the cleanse is done, as if that's the only way to diet for life.He threw in a bunch of recipies for the blandest-sounding food, so only two-thirds of the book was useful to me.The main part of it, The Lemonade Diet, is the heart of the book and it's worth a whole lot more than $6.50. ... Editorial Review

From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day. Picture cardiologists and dieticians tearing their hair out and overweight people cheering as they dive into Eggs Benedict with sausage. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Wait To Feel Fantastic! Buy This Book NOW!
I am in my late 30s, and I have a hormonal imbalance, coupled with insulin resistance caused by poor dietary habits. Unfortunately, after years of seeing physician after physician, my condition had to be essentially self-diagnosed since all of the blood tests always came back 'normal'.
5-0 out of 5 stars back to normal.......It does work!!!!
If I could give 10 stars I would, I just love this book the concept of this book and what this principle did to my body and my health!
5-0 out of 5 stars Not a diet - a way to eat for the rest of your (healthy!) life!
This book changed my life. It was given to me free when I bought some vitamins, and I am so glad it fell in my hands! All the things Dr. Schwartzbein says have made sense to me for a long time - I never did jump on the low fat bandwagon and knew that natural was always better than man-made (butter vs. margarine). What I didn't know was WHY I felt so bad when I ate sugar or how harmful damaged fats were. Just cutting out damaged fats alone has caused my chronic stomach aches to cease! I will follow this plan for the rest of my life, and encourage everyone I know to do so, too! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is for Vegans or people thinking about becoming Vegan
Granted, some of this book made me laugh out loud and reconsider some of the things I was eating. But overall, is a book telling you to go Vegan. The book doesn't talk enough about organic foods and free-range meats. It is all about meat, eggs, and milk = being fat...no matter if it comes from organic free-range sources or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful, but not what I had in mind.
I have long suspected that most of us are poisoning ourselves with food.I have noticed that many food products which used to be wholesome have quietly changed over time, incorporating chemicals and cheap substitutes to increase profit margin. This book certainly supports my suspicions.I purchased Skinny [...] hoping to find easy-to-read advice on selecting food products which still ARE healthy to eat, as well as information on the benefits of certain foods. This topic is covered to an extent. What I did not expect was the vegan manifesto. In the back of the book, the authors state that their primary reason for penning this text was to promote the vegan lifestyle. This information would be best included on the cover rather than at the end.If you read the information in the book through the appropriate filter, it is much easier to glean a little more fact, in my opinion.I did appreciate the lists of suggested menus and products; however, I was unable to locate any of the products either on health food store shelves or on the internet. The product suggestions may be outdated or too regional in focus.Overall, there is some good information in there, but realize that it has a definite slant.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm going to keep this short and sweet...
I will be honest, and say that the only reason I bought this book was because I thought it was cute. After taking it home, I quickly realized it was more serious than the title let on. I had no idea the brunt of the book was about veganism. I was a huge meat eater when I bought it, but let me tell you, as soon as I read about the USDA and the mistreatment of animals, I never touched meat again. It was THAT easy. I will also say that I loved their writing style. No BS, no hand-holding. It was solid (and sometimes scary) facts. So if you want to lose weight, and have a healthy conscience to boot, buy this book.

Editorial Review

In recent decades, many of those studying alcoholism have come to see it as a disease, rather than as a character flaw or a failure of will. And yet, alcoholism is most often treated through counseling. Joan Mathews Larson and her colleagues at the HealthRecovery Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, discovered a series of nutritional deficiencies in alcoholics, and found that with proper dietary adjustments, they could help almost three-quarters of their patients kick the bottle for good. 5-0 out of 5 stars nutrition IS a major part of happy sobriety!
The prose style of this book is not necessarily my favorite, but the information contained within it is INDISPENSIBLE to understanding how and why so many people get "unhappy" or "depressed" in sobriety...we alcoholics have a different chemical makeup, and in the ways in which we are nutritionally deficient, or are unable to utilize nutrients, or need EXTRA nutrients, or the various maladies that are common to many of us which result in these negative emotional states:thyroid problems, hypoglycemia, candida albicans (yeast) infection, etc...we are all the same in so many different respects.Larson brings all these things together and gives great refences/bibliographies.She also heads up a treatment center which uses this information in the treatment of alcoholism. It is worth it's weight in gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Works.
I read this book ten and a half years ago and haven't had alcohol since.I drank heavily for twelve years and tried countless times over those years to cut back or quit altogether -- I tried counseling, AA, Antabuse, and every book on the shelves at the time; nothing worked. The approach in this book worked the first time. For most of the past decade, I rarely even think about alcohol.AA is NOT the only answer.Read this book.If it makes sense to you, try it.Some days still won't be easy but you may find you have a fighting chance for once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good guide to using juice for
I found this book to be one of the better sources of information regarding fasting. It takes a subject that is somewhat taboo and breaks it down into simple and understandable terms. I think it's worth reading even if you don't want to practice what is being discussed. It never hurts to understand what is going on even if you don't want to do it. I will tell you this, I have followed this book and a few others and have made tremendous gains. Not in weight but in my health. One of the benefits that can't be touted enough is the true feeling of being in control of your own body. Once you get that feeling you lose this sense of helplessness and understand that your health is your own responsibility.
5-0 out of 5 stars a bit flawed but great
I read the good Doctor's book Eat to Live and then bought China Study which he talks a lot about in this book. Then I bought this book being curious after reading a few other books on fasting and this book wins hands down though I do feel he's being overly cautious about doing long fasts of more than 5 days without medical supervision to protect himself as people have been doing long fasts for centuries without medical supervision and doing just fine and since finding a Doctor in even a large community is rare indeed one is left to do this on their own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exchanges are the foundation of weight and blood sugar managment.
There is nothing more basic for weight and blood sugar management than the food exchanges. They are called exchanges because the foods in each group can be exchanged with each other and still supply a similar amount of calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and other nutrients. "The Official Pocket Guide to Dieabetic Exchanges" is an excellent resource fordescribing the nature and benefits of the exchanges.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what the Dietician ordered!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had Chron's for almost 30 years.
During those thirty years I have had three surgeries and have been on just about every medication under the sun. Nothing worked. Six months ago I started the SCD as described in this book and have amazed my Gastroenternologist with my progress. My bloodwork is all normal, my inflammation is just about gone and I am medication free for the first time in many many years. This diet may not work for everyone but for me it beats a fourth partial bowel resection!
5-0 out of 5 stars We've had amazing results from this diet!
This has been a lifechanging book for my husband, who has UC.Although it can take months to see results, we saw amazing results from this diet the very first week.We have remained on the diet for more than 6 months now and plan to stay on it permanently. The Specific Carb Diet is not an easy fix, however. To see results, you must remain 100% dedicated to the diet with absolutely no consumption of "illegal" foods. It did require a major change in our eating habits and my cooking habits. But it becomes much easier and just a way of life after a few weeks of adjustment. Thanks to this diet, my husband is medication-free for the first time in years! We are now eating healthier than ever.I strongly recommend this diet to anyone with a digestive disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Didn't Believe It Would Work Until I Tried It!
My husband, with Crohn's Disease, was told by his doctor that food had absolutely nothing to do with his illness or his recuperation. We proved him dead wrong! The SCDiet has led to "health miracles" for six of my immediate family members:Me (Celiac Disease, FMS, Severe Allergies, Asthma), my husband (Crohn's), my 83 year old mother (Diverticulitis, Hiatal Hernia, Bleeding Ulcer, Arthritis), my two brothers (IBS & Celiac), and a son (Celiac). Each of us have no symptoms left and have been able to eliminate all drugs pertaining to each of these illnesses and also reduce blood pressure meds.We were each overweight and have easily lost to within about 10 pounds of our desired weight; three of us losing over 50 pounds each. We feel better, have more energy, and look better than we have in years! We find that it takes less food to satisfy and sustain us when we eat whole, natural foods . . . we have broken the cycle of overeating and binging. The SCD has been a God-send for us all! Please visit austinscdfriends.com to learn how we did it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Unwieldy in Every Sense, Needs Revision
I give this book three stars because I don't regret buying it, and I've used it frequently.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Foods are conveniently organized alphabetically, but portions are not clear so it's difficult to use when trying to track calories.Example, grapefruit shown by size (diameter) - would be more accurate and convenient if all foods were shown in ounces and if the portion preceded nutritional content on every line.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uniform measurements, please!
We have been using this book for about a decade, and appreciate that it does seem to include every morsel of food in a supermarket aisle.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
This diet book is a waste of money. If I would go on this diet,I would starve. It is so restrictive that I would very soon be bored with the foods allowed.I want to lose weight but I don't think I would be able to stick to this restrictive a plan. There seems to be some inconsistencies in the book.Recipes include things he says earlier in the book are no-nos.So are they ok or not?Don't waste the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for Pot Bellies
This is the first book I have read that turned the three main energy sources into just two. Calories (energy) come from carbohydrates, fats and protein. But if your body is turning protein into energy, it removes the amino portion of the molecule first, and burns the rest as a carbohydrate. This is why both carbs and proteins stimulate the release of insulin, the hormone that is too high in virtually everyone who needs to lose weight. That is especially serious in diabetics, who are told to cut sugar, but encouraged to overindulge in protein. The results of substituting protein for carbs include disappointing results and kidney stress. One needs some protein for its own sake, so Dr. Rosedale--unique among low-carb diets--recommends calculating how much you need, and then sticking to that level.

I got this book subsequent to being diagnosed with high cholesterol, and being put on statin medication, to reduce it.I was appalled when I went to pick up my first thirty Zocor tablets, and was told "That'll be $155 please."I haven't had health insurance for three years now, and couldn't afford this amount.I was abit dismayed anyway, at being put on this medication.I thought I'd be able to bring my cholesterol down by reigning in my diet, I'd been eating poorly prior to my bloodwork.I found generic medication I could afford, and took it for two months, but wasn't convinced that inhibiting an enzyme in my liver was the way to solve the problem;if anything, the medication allowed me to keep eating crappy, and not have bad blood levels! So, after trying it the conventional way, and seeing that, yes, my cholesterol levels had come down, I decided to try Dr. Rosedale's diet, and supplement plan.I found it online, while researching cholesterol.I am in my third month of the diet, and, while I say I "approximate" the diet, I pretty well stick to the supplement plan.I've had some really good experiences with this, and some fear, at the high levels of some supplements he recommends, but have had remarkable results with Vitamin K.I was diagnosed with osteopenia a year or so ago, and put on Fosamx, which I refused to take.It also was expensive, $14 per weekly pill, and its mechanism of action, as well as potential side-effects turned me off.Dr. Rosedale recommends 2000 mcg of K per day for oseteoporosis prevention, 8000 mcg per day for treatment.Since osteopenia is a milder form of bone loss that osteoporosis, I take 5000 mcg per day, of K-1, which is what you get in most vitamin bottles. The chemical name starts with a P.There's another Vitamin K, which is K-2, and whose chemical name starts with an M, which you have to be careful about, because high levels of it can harm you, but the research I did on the internet says that K-1 isn't harmful at high levels, and can be helpful with connective tissue diseases. This I have to tell you.I have suffered from Dupuytren's in my left hand for five years, and mine was atypically painful.I was also getting Leiderhose, and Peyronies.Devestating.I was scared to take 2000 mcg K per day all at once, from the 100 mcg I was taking, so I ramped up to 1000 mcg the first day, then 2000 mcg the next day, and 5000 mcg the fourth day. After the second or third day, I began to notice dramatic changes in my left hand: reduction of pain, increased comfortable range of motion. Now, three weeks out, my Peyronies is all but gone, my Leiderhose almost gone, and my left hand only mildly affected.I was starting to get it in my right hand as well, and althought I still feel aches sometimes, it's greatly reduced over what I was experiencing before I took the increased doses of K.The stuff is cheap, too.I get 100, 100 mcg pills for $1.96.For a supposedly incurable disease! But I tried ordering Dr. Rosedale's supplements online, at his website, and although it took my order, it didn't ship, and my bankcard was never debited. Also, I wrote to Dr. Rosedale to tell him about the connective tissue disease improvements, with the Vitamin K, and to thank him for writing his book, and my mail came back, "Moved, no new address".I didn't know what to make of this, but the changes have been marvelous.I'm learning what it's like to relax.I was in a hyper state for so long, I guess with all the carbohydrates I used to eat, that the unhyper state seemed strange to me at first.I can look, plan, act. Before, and still sometimes, I act compulsivley, always running, like a hamster on a wheel, but this diet slows me down, allows me to be more in the moment, emotionally, which is not always positive, but at least it's real, and I'm learning to tolerate emotions I previously would have run away from. I used food as a place to hide, and, letting that go, I deal with reality more directly now.I just stop, get ahold of myself, wait, and the overwhelming feeling passes.I experience moments of stopping keeping myself in a perpetual motion cycle, and see outside of the corner I'd painted myself into. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher noted improvements first week!!!!
I purchased this book in hopes of decreasing or eliminating my 11.5 year old son's Ritalin. He started the vitamins/minerals/and Omega 3 and so far we have eliminated dairy products and prepared waffles and cereals switching to wheat, gluten, and milk free waffle mix, and increased water consumption- 6 days ago. His teacher asked me what I changed at home on day 5; she asked because he had an excellent week. The timing was not planned but the week coincided with the state standardized testing- he didn't even use the scribe his IEP states he's entitled to!! I will soon decrease his Ritalin working closely with his psychiatrist, therapist, teachers, and sports coaches. I have already recommended this book to school staff and parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Guidance
This book guides you through the maze of brands and "buy"-s and "do not buy"-s for diabetics, or anyone who has to watch their carbs. The only draw back is, that many brands the book recommends, for example breads are not available in the supermarkets I shop.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED
This book was totally not what I expected.Maybe I was wanting to much, but this was definately a let down.Out of all the Sugar buster products I have bought, this is one I would not waste my time or money buying.Others like it and thats fine, each is entitled to his or her opinion. To me it was not worth my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy guide for shopping
Since it's pocket size it's convenient- nothing more, nothing less- it's not promising extra miracles or secrets. The reader from Leverett, MA is a bit naive to comment on the authors pushing Sugar Busters products - this is America, folks, people are going to try and make an extra buck - it doesn't mean you have to buy the specific products suggested. You should read the book to understand why you should pick certain foods. That should always serve as your general guideline when a food is in question - this guide just serves as a quick handy reference. ... Editorial Review

The same brain chemicals that are altered by antidepressant drugs arealso affected by the foods we eat. According to addiction expert DesMaisons, many people, including those who are depressed, are "sugar sensitive."Eating sweets gives them a temporary emotional boost, which leads to a cravingfor still more sweets. The best way to keep these brain chemicals in the rightbalance and keep blood-sugar levels steady, she says, is through the dietaryplan she describes in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A step towards an increased understanding of serotonin.
"Potatoes not Prozac" is the most popular of the serotonin literature that has been produced over the last several years. I have read two other books "Secrets of Serotonin" by Carol Hart and "The Serotonin Solution" by Judith J. Wurtman. They all agree that the best way to boost serotonin levels is to eat an nearly all carbohydrate meal or large snack at least three hours after consuming the last protein food. Proteins contain the amino acid tryptophan which is needed to make serotonin. However, the tryptophan molecules are large and have difficulty crossing the blood brain barrier when other amino acids are present. The eating of carbohydrates boosts the levels of insulin in our blood. Insulin moves these other amino acids into the muscle cells allowing the tryptophan to more abundantly enter into the brain.

This book has changed my life in only one month.I wake with balanced even mood.I have lost weight. The sugar cravings have disappeared. It is work to eat in balanced meals, but worth the effort. I am a vegetarian and it was hard to eat that much protein. I now can see how commercially processed food is overstimulating our taste buds, which then deadens them until they only want sugar and salt. Now I can enjoy the taste of quinoa, beets, and cabbage. These foods were unappealing and tasteless only a month ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Find!

By following the simple guidelines in the book, I have successfully eliminated sugar and caffeine from my diet, bringing about a stability in my blood sugar along with my emotions. And, as a plus, I've lost 5 lbs. in a week! America's parents need to get a copy and put it to use if they love their kids. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite my cup of tea.
I like the concept of making weight loss more of a spiritual journey, but Chumley's religious approach is a little more than I can accept.I think if you are really at rock bottom regarding your weight, or if you are quite religious to start with, this book is more likely to be helpful to you.On the plus side, it is simple to understand, concise and well-written.Not a bad read, and has some helpful bits even if you're unable to accept the entire book as a new way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give God the Glory
This is a great book, easy reading, inspiring, and motivational. You can't ask for a better way to lose weight than with God. It's so great, in fact, that a friend and I have started a group at yahoogroups, based on the book...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for me, maybe for you too...
I have this book and when I followed my diet I lost 12 lbs in 3 months and about 6 or more inches. I didn't think it was too too hard to follow...the hot herbal tea was a little different but drinkable. The great thing about this diet is that no special food products need to be bought and there are great recipes included in the back for each body type. I didn't even follow the diet too strictly and I still saw results. It was great for me so maybe it could work for you too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never has a health book felt so tailored to my needs!
I picked up my first copy of this book several years ago, only to have that and the next 3 copies I obtained for myself 'stolen' by friends and relatives who were amazed at the individual diet/nutrition plans geared toward each body type found in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to live- read!
this book should not be read only be people who are obese and want to lose weight. this would also apply to those skinny people who can eat McD's and not gain an ounce.
