4-0 out of 5 stars Detoxing with common sense
This is a good book to read for following your first detox. But I did find that my body needed some protein on the second day.So I added beans to the evening meal of miso the second night and it worked like a charm. This book contains some New Age mumbo-jumbo, but if you follow the dietary plans, you will see some amazing benefits. As the book recommends, I highly recommend you stick with a strict vegi diet the week before your detox to get the most benefits.I started on a Tuesday.By the following Tuesday I had lost 9 pounds and felt so great I hated going off the detox plan. Once you try a couple of different plans in this book, you figure out what works best for you.I invested in a Green Power juicer ..., the kind that juices wheatgrass, and I'm using it like crazy. You can also pick up a book of juicing recipes that will help you find ways to make the juices more delicious.Enjoy!5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book!
One of the best books I have ever read.A must have book for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Complete and Informative

4-0 out of 5 stars I use this book extensively
This book is the required text of my dietetics coursework time and time again and thus I use it extensively. At first I resented the very large and heavy book, but more and more I find myself turning to it for answers, even for things that aren't school-related.My university has a book rental program.Previously I'd only rented the book, but now, as I sit inbetween semesters, I find myself missing it terribly. The moment the bookstore opens I will be buying this book for keeps.5-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the Healthy & ILL
It is a book that will answer all your questions regarding Food, Diet and Nutrition exactly as its title suggests.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Krause's Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy (eds; Mahan and Escott-Stump)10th ed is 1000% user friendly! Each chapter starts off with a glossary of terms in the ensuing pages which levels the learning field.Colorful charts on practical information are generously sprinkled in everychapter with clear illustrations on anatomy, energy reactions, andalgorithms. You'll find lots of "ah ha" moments are you gothrough this book like I did. An example was the increased metabolic rateby adding spice to a meal! And the reference was also right there!Read more

Editorial Review

For most health books, the word

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm pretty sure that Julia Ross is a fraud
After I read both the diet cure and the mood cure, I had the (dis)pleasure to meet Ms. Ross at her recovery center in Marin. It was awful. She has a prescribed plan that is one size fits all (for the most part). Her book is confusing and I'm not sure where the research is to back it up. She acts as a therapist, but she's not licensed. I wasted thousands of dollars in her program. She demands that you buy her supplements, see her nutritionists, do what she says otherwise she'll draw conclusions on you based on your unwillingness. She doesn't believe that people should have minds of their own, that they should following mindlessly according to her teachers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch research
I work in molecular biology, and that has given me an understanding of cellular metabolism. In gaining this understanding, I have come to realize how horrific our American diets are.Unfortuneately, a few well meaning and misguided nutritionists and scientists earlier in teh twentieth century tried to reform our eating habits. These habits stuck, and now we have a country of fat unhealthy citizens. The more I read about nutrition, the more I understand what is wrong with our eating habits. The author has doen her research and has a very firm grasp on the concept of cellular metabolism. She references actual scientific studies that have been published.More and more literature is coming out debunking the food pyramid and extolling the health benefits of a high protein, low SIMPLE carb diet. This is not to be confused with diets such as Atkins, where all carbs are evil.Or diets such as weight watchers which encourage the consumption of processed foods.Or diets such as the Zone, whose recommended caloric intake is not enough to sustain basic cellular function.Diets such as South Beach are actually good models of a healthy eating plan. And amino acids, as Ms. Ross explains in her book, are the building blocks of proteins, whish are essential for our body to function. While her book does skip around, and can be a little hard to follow, it offers sound advice.Advice that sadly the rest of the world is slow to follow, out of ignorance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information. Sometimes too much.
It can get a bit tedious at times and if you buy all the recommended supplements, you'll be spending a fortune. However, I did think the research was thorough and they had some really great points. Worth highlighting before passing along to someone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT
Book was written by a true professional. I like books that repeats itself a little bit in each chapter. This is how a true journalist writes a book. It is very important to go over in each chapter a little bit of what what taught in the previous chapter, this is called repetive learning and the learning will stick with you longer. Very good written book.

1-0 out of 5 stars stupid book and waste of money
Ok, Cichoke is not wrong. But here is the BIG problem. He repeats himself constantly. He cuts and pastes the same exact phrases over and over and over again on almost every page. The sloppiness and pure laziness of this book defy the mind. It is immoral to say so little and repeat it so often to make a book look big and fat. This entire book could have been written in about 20 pages. If I had seen this book before I would never have bought it. Buy any other book on enzymes. There is a caveat, if you can not remember what you have read as you turn from one page to another, then you will love this book. Every page is a near repeat of the page before. On the plus side, the info is accurate. I am not accusing him of being wrong. An additional problem is his zealous plugging for specific brands of enzymes, for no reason. Does he own stock? Lazy author, not much info, repetitious. Makes all health enthusiasts look like opportunists. SHAME!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Encyclopedia of Enzymes!
Dr. Cichoke does a great job of giving the basics of enzyme therapy, that is the therapeutic value of increasing the enzyme content of your diet. The book covers enzymes in natural foods, such as amylases (starch digesters) in beet juice, as well as powerful enteric-coated enzyme pills, such as Wobe Mugos. The book is divided into multiple sections. The first 88 pages are an introductory course in enzyme types (such as amylase, lipase, pancreatin, papain, etc), the function of enzymes, as well as an encyclopedia of "enzyme helpers" such as vitamins, etc, and their individual benefits. In fact, the information is extremely useful even for those not interested in enzyme therapy, particularly the tables listing various phytochemicals and their uses.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book, if it didn't fall apart!
I am very dissapointed with the poor spiral binding on this book, (4th edition)! As a dietetic student, I don't have much money to spend on books as it is. As much as this one is priced, the publishers could have put a higher quality binding on it, (or made it a paperback, like previous editions). Pages are falling out constantly, especially since it the type of book you refer to all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
This is an incredibly helpful tool. It's well organized, concise, and easy to use.A great reference for RD's and other health professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good
Though the book is truly outdated by now, last copyright 1997, it was fairly well done. There are website links at the end of each chapter and useful info tidbits throughout. It is a complete basic information guide to Nutrition: the basics plus nutrition for disease states. I believe it being outdated is why there was not more discussion in the basic chapters about overconsumption of proteins like we're seeing with Adkins. It definitely needs a NEW edition with more discussion of what's going on in Nutrition today, problems etc. And a modernization of the pictures and text itself would really make it stand out. And, I would put links throughout the text, not just at the end of the chapter. This could really be a fun book if they got someone who knew how to change it right. I think it could be a best seller for Nutrition textbooks.

1-0 out of 5 stars The man should know better.
Would you trust a doctor who confused plants with animals? Mr Goglia does this when he calls yeast a bacteria. They are not the same.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Program Works!!!
Not only does Philip's food program work in losing extra body fat, it keeps you sane too. There is no more question about what will I eat today? Not only did I read the book, but I see Philip in his office for personal nutrition counseling. This is the only program that has EVER worked for me.Philip is a genious!I've learned more from him about nutrition than any doctor or trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Nutrition and how it affects us
This book does not take too much time to read.It is written in a great format.First the schooling of nutrition and the different metabolic types. Next how to determine which type are you. Then it goes into the way the program works with different levels, and portions of foods to increase and get your body to the best metabolic state, and the highest metabolic temperature. (100%)I thought the most important fact was that after considerable weight loss, the program keeps adjusting to the new weight. I think it is important to point out just as Phil Goglia pointed out, weight is not as important as the "space you occupy". I recomment this book to everyone who ever wanted to know why they couldn't pack on muscle easily, or why diabetes is becoming an epidemic in this country, or why they are overweight or lack energy etc..Will answer many questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deftly blends the scientific knowledge of a nutritionist with the wisdom and practical skill of a trained marketer
Marketing Nutrition: Soy, Functional Foods, Biotechnology, and Obesity by Brian Wansink (Professor of Applied Economics of Marketing and of Nutritional Science, Cornell University) focuses on an increasingly problematic issue in American society: how can people be persuaded to eat more nutritious foods, including vegetables and soy foods? Almost everyone knows that fruit is better for one's health than a cookie, yet not so many will pick an apple over a cookie for a dessert when the opportunity comes to choose. Marketing techniques for unhealthy foods push consumers into poor diet patterns that result in obesity, from childhood on up. Wansink reveals that the same marketing tools, techniques and insights that make non-nutritious foods popular can also bolster the appeal of nutritious foods. Techniques such as targeting foods toward the "gatekeeper" or family cook first (whose selections have more impact on what the family eats than anything else), labeling foods to sound delicious, marketing techniques to introduce unfamiliar foods and acquaint them with popular awareness, and much more are discussed in depth. An insightful book that deftly blends the scientific knowledge of a nutritionist with the wisdom and practical skill of a trained marketer.
1-0 out of 5 stars How Soy Became "Healthy" .. . and Profitable!
If you ever wanted to know how soy went from an unprofitable "poverty food" to the fastest growing segment of the health food industry, you must read this book. It tells exactly how the soy industry plays "consumer helper" and encourages soy consumption with the use of "health claims" that have been carefully created through the power of public relations, the corruption of scientific inquiry, and the collusion of the FDA. More than 60 years of studies link soy protein and soy oil to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune system breakdown, thyroid disorders, infertility, reproductive system problems, and even cancer growth. Yet soy is now widely perceived as a "health food" for men, women and children. This book tells why and how. It's a five star book for marketers that gets one star because its authors fail to acknowledge the industry's shabby and slippery ethics and its shameless putting of profits before people.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read for the American consumer
This book presents a very real and significant problem in today's society. That is, the North American population is getting more and unhealthy, in large part due to the North American diet. Furthermore, this Cornell University marketing professor suggests that marketing can be used to reverse this health crisis. The problematic question which consequently arises (unique to the issue of healthy eating), is how can consumers be marketed to enjoy healthy foods, when they already know what kinds of food they like to eat?

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid Diabetes...Avoid Death...Read Syndrome X!

4-0 out of 5 stars The expert on insulin resistance
The lead researcher on HOW too many refined carbs can lead to coronary heart disease. His description of the HOW is quite valuable, if a little repetitive. His prescription for action is adequate with some useful material, but not really his forte.See the reviews of the hardcover version, which has a slightly different title.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Insulin Damage
This is a great book that will remain the "Classic" long after all others on this subject have faded. It's written by the physician who found Syndrome X and gives straight-up information on the subject of how uncontrolled insulin and glucose levels damage our health. Although there is a wealth of information on the internet, much of it is inaccurate or partially inaccurate, and that's the case with Syndrome X.All the other Syndrome X books that have been written were knock-offs published after this one by authors who knew far less about the subject. What you get in this book is 100% quality information and solutions that you can trust. However, it's not necessarily written for the customer who wants only touch-feely anecdotes; it tells us the real scoop. Reading the medical journals of new research emerging confirms everything in this book, and shows that high insulin levels can cause other horrible diseases besides Syndrome X, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, such as all these new ones that have been added to the list: colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, sleep breathing disorder, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, impaired cognitive (brain)function, polycystic ovary syndrome, and a couple of others disorders. This book is the best of the bunch. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Look For Better Choice
The basic idea of avoiding certain foods that aren't good for the body is worthwhile. However, the book rambles in information that isn't that helpful. The key is eating more vegetables and fruits and avoiding mucus causing foods. An internet search may give you the quick information of this and you can skip this book. Also, books that deal with getting rid of inflamation in the body will be helpful. It is amazing how many diseases and ailments can be healed by changing what we eat... choose well for a healing fountain of youth!

5-0 out of 5 stars very simple
I was introduced to Ehret's books as a teenager by a vegan friend and his family. I grew up a mixed eater and suffered a chronic cold and other health inconveniences. After a year of following his teachings I was a normal kid again with no health inconveniences whatsoever.
1-0 out of 5 stars Fasting is for Cleansing, Not for Everyday Life
What this book preaches is starvation, pure and simple. This is a very old book, wherein the author makes many unsubstantiated glowing statements, and unfortunately many people, including myself, were drawn into the craze of attempting to find the "superior health" that Ehret promised, only to be left with broken health because of having done so. My first introduction to the book came about 1963, although I did not really try to live Ehret's recommendations fully until about 1966. Being young and gullible I took everything Professor Ehret said as absolutely true. This was a big mistake. I believe this book came very close to killing me, as I am already prone to low-blood sugar, without starving myself.
