5-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Binge Anymore!
This book has completely turned my life around.I thought my bingeing on carbs was simply a matter of willpower. After reading this book, I now understand the biological reason for it. My body was screaming for Seritonin. This book explains how to enable your body to create more seritonin without bingeing. With more seritonin, i no longer have the desire to binge. The author Judith Wurtman does an excellent job of explaining why we get uncontrollable cravings and how to qual them. She also does a great job in explaining why the 'Low Carb Diets' only make you crave carbs more.Thank God for this book. It's helped me understand how your body works and why it craves certain things at different times.Buy it, you won't regret it.

2-0 out of 5 stars What is true?
I have read many serotonin-related books and I am quite confused. In his book "Beyond Prozac" Michael J. Norden, an eminent Psychiatrist, states that the much-publicized high-carbohydrate diet may actually make you depressed and overweight. In "Potatoes not Prozac" ahigh-carb plus protein diet is advocated. Dr. Joel Robertson in his"Natural Prozac" states that protein is a dopamine booster. Whoshould one believe? What is true and what is not? Should one accept Dr.Wurtman's approach as correct? O.K. she is an M.I.T. professor but theother authors have impressive academic credentials as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally...a system that works!
I have been using this book's recommendations religiously since August, and I've lost thirteenpounds. This is the onlydiet I've ever been on that has enabled me to exercise at the same time, and not become terribly depressed. The only other wayI could lose weight was withdiet pills, and thenI couldn't exercise because I didn't have the energy. It fits my eating patterns perfectly, and I have not had anynear-fainting episodes from low blood sugar in months. I also have suffered from mild obsessive-compulsiveness in thepast; I believe that thisdiet helps control that, too. I take vitamins, fatty acids, and kava kava in addition to this diet, and I am telling everyone I know about it. Thanksso much for all your research. I would liketo seea sequel with a maintenance diet plan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book by a great woman. Thanks Adelle Davis!
I have been benefitting from this book for the last 20 years. Despite what some doctors say, despite these doctors' ignorance, this woman and her books can do much more for us and our health than a whole lot of doctors, hospitals and the entire pharmaceutical industry.
1-0 out of 5 stars Author was a quack
Stop. Please see the medical review of this book at http://www.quackwatch.org/04ConsumerEducation/davis.html .People have died relying on parts. It is not "super research".

5-0 out of 5 stars Super researcher! Super Lady!
Back in the late 1960's, a good friend gave me a copy of Let's Have Healthy Children. After absorbing the message that book delivered, I became a truehearted fan of Adele Davis. She showed us so much research had been conducted confirming the need and uses of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrition. Long before the 1990's it was known folic acid is needed during the first few weeks of gestation to prevent spina bifida. Pre-eclampsia is still treated with magnesium sulfate, but to avoid developing that condition, Adele Davis prescribed the supplements an expectant mother needs. How did she know about these? She perused so many documents and researched studies, much of which occurred before the 1930's.

5-0 out of 5 stars For nutrition's sake, keep this book next to your stove.
This book is much better than its reviews would suggest and is indeed essnetial reading for anyone concerned with nutrition and ways to eat more healthily in today's toxic world. We lve surrounded by poison. Or maybe a better way to put it is, there are a few wet green grapes in the barbed wire or today's fast-food paradise. And thia book teaches you how to go for the gusto.
3-0 out of 5 stars Old information, Good format
I like the way the book is put together, but for a brand new book there shouldn't be nutrition information as old as 1983.You can find better then this.Keep looking. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It is very hard to find your type.
While I found this book very interesting, I thought it was really confusing at the same time. I had a really hard time figuring out my type. The author suggests using "muscle testing" to find your type, but she does not tell you what kinds of tests to use. I tried to have my practitioner test me, but she had no idea what tests to use either. I think it is a really great concept, but it should be easier to "type" yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book to determine individual dietary guidelines.
After having read and successfully participated in the body type diets prescribed by Dr. Abravanel, I am a believer that not everyone benefits from the same type of foods, or the same type of diets.4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
I found the book read like a textbook. It was very informative, but once you find out what you are, thats it. I recommend a few people go in together and buy it. We have had a lot of fun at work finding our differenttypes. I had myself convinced I was a Heart, but later after reading allthe bios, found that I am definately a Pancreas....not very glamorous.. Theprofiles are very informative and interesting.. I do wish, in regard to thefoods list that it went more in depth with the portions of foods etc. but Iguess that is pretty well know anyway. I was pleased with my purchase. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but not the whole story...
The most helpful information provided in this book might be summarized in one sentence: Eating a healthy diet will help your family in many ways, and supplements can be helpful as well. Those supplements--more familiarly known as omega-3 fatty acids, the EPA and DHA of other nutrition-oriented books--have largely been lost in today's typical American diet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for ADDers
This is an excellent book. The basic idea of the book is that there is link between lack of Omega-3 in the diets of people with ADD and other differences. The book offers research to help proove this theory. It also offers a suggestions on how to add omega-3 to our diets.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't get this book...
Is it possible to rate a book higher than 5 stars? When I first read this book, my first reaction was anger. I was mad, because I had never heard of most of the information in this book. This stuff SHOULD be in the public domain. Why hasn't the media reported on any of these studies? Then I thought about it. If this stuff really does work, many companies stand to lose significant billions of dollars in revenue from the sale of ritalin and aderall.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
This is a great book full of wisdom and insight from someone who has "been through it all".I was gripped by Seattle's life growing up with tough times in North Dakota and becoming a successful bisnesswoman in today's world. There is tons of advise for just about anyone going through any situation.Very insperational!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Solution? -plain common sense!
Seatle Sutton's book is a simple primer in the way things ought to be done. Her particular calling is "healthy food" but the principles she expounds would work in just about every business, every walk of life and everybody's existence. She is one of the last of those depression years survivors who learned the lessons of conservatism from her upbringing. However cliched those lessons are, there is a ringing honesty in the philosophies she puts forward. And applied to her brainchild, the "Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating" program, and the corporation that supports it nationwide, there is no finer, nor more appropriate message in today's morass of diet diatribe.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book.
Yes, a very interesting book. And I amazed, Dr Gerson wrote it many years ago, and he could see clearly many problems that we are facing right now: soil content, environment and water pollution, too much sodium and processed food....the clue is, whether you have cancer or not: EAT HEALTHY! EAT RIGHT!!
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like a textbook on health.
Dr. Gerson practiced in the US after coming from Germany during WWII.He was told they treat, not cure, in this country. He had terrible headaches which lead to a high potassium diet approach which started helping turberculosis and cancer patients. This evolved into more and more natural foods high in veggies, devoid of salt, fats and animal protein. His approach has all the things they have been finding as anti-cancer- carrot/apple juice, green juice from lettuce and tops from beets, special soup with potatoes, onions, leeks, celery and parsley root, garlic, tomatoes, slow cooked for 3 hours. The primary focus of it all is strengthening the liver, and also starving and dissolving the cancer. There are hourly juices. The potassium supplement was a result of 100 experiments to get a combination of 4 different potassium compounds, that would go into cells and displace sodium. Cancer in general has a fermentation metabolism that loves sodium and needs little oxygen. The therapy gets blood and potassium in there, as well as the carotenoids and other things that stop the cancer or slow it down.Another key factor is the juices must be very fresh, to not destroy the oxidizing enzymes (your body also oxidizes germs with hydrogen peroxide mfg by immune cells); in fact intravenous hyd peroxide is very effective with cancer supposedly, as well as emphyesema- provides oxygen to cells. Also a juice press is needed, not centrifugal, which strips off the charge on the juice, making it ineffective at getting into the cells.Gerson also talks about studies that measured the electrical potential of organs and how they diminished with poisons. This is still an unexplored area I think.Dr. Albert Schweitzer called Gerson an eminent genius, as he renewed Schweitzer's life who went on to do his best work. The book has 50 cases documented cures.Gerson also took some of his cases before Senator Claude Pepper's commitee in the 50s and was narrowly voted down for the gov't to sponsor research in his methods.Morris Fishbein of the AMA harassed Gerson many years, and Fishbein was forced to retract his slanderous article against Gerson in the AMA Journal.Gerson treated John Gunther in Death Be Not Proud, and he got much better, but other doctors decided to try reverse hormones on him as that was the latest thing, and it worked for a short time, then the cancer came back wildly and he died.
5-0 out of 5 stars This therapy works
I In mid 1998 I was diagonised with prostate cancer and after much research decided to start with the Gerson therapy. I began at a hosipatal that applied the therapy and followed the advise of the doctor throuout the prpgram I did not use any conventional or mainstream treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of complex topics
As an internist, I am a little closer to the obesity side of things but I found the entire book informative and very easy to comprehend. The chapters are purposefully short to facilitate the episodic reading that is often the only reading possible in a busy practice. I particularly like Dr. Brownell's public health and environmental approach to the problem of obesity. This textbook is a great way for the uninitiated to "catch up" on the current concepts of obesity and eating disorders. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reading for laypeople, disappointing for scientists
There are two kinds of books that deal with bio-medical issues: those that have reputable scientific references located within the book, and those that don't. This book does not. If this book had the hundreds of journal articles needed to back up Dr. Hoffer's claims, I would have given it a 4 or 5 star rating. The bottom line is that if a scientific book does not have any references, they may as well be telling you that the world is flat. Time and time again Dr. Hoffer says that he has evidence about the effectiveness of this vitamin or that. Put in the references, Dr. Hoffer! 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review of vitamins and minerals
It is frustrating that the medical profession, in its ignorance, arrogance, and smugness, looks down on "megavitamin" therapy.Vitamins were placed here by the creator(s), to keep us healthy. The drugs "pushed" by MDs were created by Frankenstein in a lab, and frankly, Frankenstein barely understood one tenth of what he was doing, which explains all those side effects.5-0 out of 5 stars hoffer,s laws of natural nutrition

4-0 out of 5 stars Overview of heart disease with new insights/recommendations
The title of this book struck me as a bit of hyperbole, since most people think of "cure" in the sense of disease eradication.I guess that goal might be achieved in some cases by strict adherence to Dr. Cooke's guidelines, but I think the term the term "cure" in the title is better understood in the sense of "treatment for a disease".Dr. Cooke himself tells you that a clinically available test for endothelial dysfunction is still not available. It therefore seems premature to suggest that these guidelines have proven to be a real "cure" in the sense most people use that word. However, I certainly don't doubt those who say that following Dr. Cooke's advice has resulted in their feeling much better. In fact, I intend to try his two weeks of menus and diet guidelines to see if it helps me. I settled on a "four stars" for this book because first, most of the material in its 310 pages is a re-hash of information that's already available elsewhere - for example, the benefits of fruits and vegetables, fiber, soy, fish oil, various supplements, aerobic exercise; and the dangers of elevated homocystein or low HDL etc. These recommendations could be found in virtually any recent book or website aiming to educate people about preventing or treating heart disease, although Dr. Cooke (and Ms. Zimmer) do a good job of bringing these topics together and explaining how they help with one's endothelium.Second, the diet recommendations include two weeks of menus and recipes, which is alright - but I think a more practical approach is to give readers a more detailed analysis of foods they should or should not eat, and explain why.For example, Dr. Atkins (whatever else you think of him) lists foods according to whether they should be consumed frequently, moderately, or rarely.A person can then plan their own menus without trying to follow a cookbook. You may not have, for example, easy access year around to fresh bunches of watercress and arugula, or edamame. (In fairness, most of the ingredients in Dr. Cooke's recipes are commonly available).I would prefer to consult a list of many foods and see whether consuming one was likely to be of benefitor was likely to be harmful.I could then take the foods that are available, or most appealing, to me and plan my consumption accordingly. If you haven't already purchasedother books which explain the advantages of a Mediterranean diet, exercise, weight loss, good and bad fats, and supplements like l-arginine and fish oil, then this book will provide information you may find revealing and helpful. The information about the role of the endothelium and nitric oxide will also be interesting to anybody dealing with heart disease and other problems related to a diseased endothelium (such as erectile dysfunction). And who knows, maybe you will be "cured".

4-0 out of 5 stars Get the insight's of the worlds #1 authority on l-arginine
Dr. Cooke is the world's number one expert on the nutritional supplement l-arginine and its antagonist, asymetric dimethylarginine. It's a mouthful, but among the keys to cardiovascular health. Dr. Cooke speaks with the authority of someone who has performed a huge amount of the "bench" research himself. If you're interested in knowing about the most powerful tools available to prevent heart attack and control cardiovascular risk, Dr. Cooke's book is a crucial addition to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Nutrition Class
I actually enjoy reading this book for class. Especially since the chapters are written in an informative yet easy to understand way. On the inside cover there is a quick guide to the DV of minerals and other supplements that has come in handy outside of class. Worth the money if you are looking for a textbook!

This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university.I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course.Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading.I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.5-0 out of 5 stars Normal and Clinical Nutrition
