5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review of herbal medicines!!!
Outstanding reference text for those interested in the REAL evidence for/against herbal medicine and botanical remedies. The authors provide detailed information on the history, traditional usage, laboratory evidence and clinical findings associated with dozens of herbals. The result is quite an exhaustive body of information that should serve as an authoritative reference text for any health practitioner or scientist with interest in this area. if you want to know more about botanical medicines, this is the book to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars authorative and well-researched
A modified version of one of the herbs discussed in this book, Astragalus, was featured as a CME (Continuing Medical Education) course for physicians in the International Journal of Integrative Medicine, which is nothing short of a stellar endorsement for the material found in this book. If you want the best in scientific and evidence-based information on herbal medicines, this authorative and well-researched text is the best choice for both doctors and the educated lay person. As a practicing doctor with over twenty years of clinical experience, multiple credentials in herbal medicine, the author of the book "Viral Immunity," and numerous academic papers on herbs, I highly recommend this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's hard to read
It has tons of information; both fresh and processed foods, but I found it difficult to look at the pages. The cheap, greyish, mass market paperback pages are fine for a novel and straight through reading, but when you're trying to follow a tiny chart it makes it hard to do.After looking at all the food counting books in the bookstore, I finally found one compact book with medium stock, bright paper and great info that was easy on the eyes for just $2 more. The Ultimate Calorie, Carb, & Fat Gram Counter by Lea Ann Holzmeister.I recommend that one over the Netzer book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But Wished It Had a Bit More
I am on a strict high protein diet so this was a very good book as it lists protein amts. for tons of foods.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is not very helpful and confusing to use. A lot of the information it provides is information you can read on the food labels IF you buy those brands. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Love-hate relationship
I purchased this book on the advice of a dietitian, with the goal of lowering my husband's cholesterol. It has lots of minuses and a few pluses. I am constantly scribbling my own comments on the recipes, because they do not appear to be carefully tested or thoughtfully written. For example, some recipes say simply to put the ingredients in a baking dish, without specifying that you lightly oil it or use a nonstick one, and then at serving time the food sticks disastrously to the dish. With other recipes, after several tries -- first following the recipe verbatim, then adding my own variations to punch it up -- I have crossed them out as hopelessly dull. Another problem I have with this book is the binding, as many of the pages detached themselves in a short time. Finally, I have to nail them for listing as separate recipes "Skinny Burgers" and "Very Skinny Burgers," when the only difference is the amount of ground beef used. (Hello? Editors? Anybody there?) That said, there are some lovely recipes that even my fussy husband enjoys (e.g., curried chicken and peanut salad, homemade ramen, and oysters in crusty French bread), even though he often threatens to burn the book or throw it in the garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commendation for the Connors
This book was/is extremely helpful to me as an individual recently diagnosed with idiopathic cardiomyopathy.I do have a degree in Biology, but I think this book would be just a readable if I did not.Not only doesthe extensive list of foods and their CSI numbers help me on a daily basis, but also the recipes which designate the fat content, fiber, calories, salt, CSI number, and number of servings and/or serving size.I am amember of Weight Watchers because I recognize that even being overweight alittle adds extra capillaries to be pumped through to feed that fat, putting additional work on the heart. The calories, fat content, fiber, and serving size are needed in Weight Watchers to use their point system. I'm also on a salt-restricted diet ...another content number given.Ioriginally checked this book out at the public library.I am now orderingit on Amazon.com.I've researched a number of books via the library butonly ordered a few. That should tell you how valuable this book is to me. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and authoritative, guide to control of high lipids.
Dr. and Mrs Connor are, respectively, a world-class lipidologist who teaches at the Oregon Health Sciences University, and an amazingly competent dietician who cooks each recipe in this book 5-6 times herself. The Connors devised a method by which you may determine, by means of a single number, to what extent a particular food is good or bad for your arteries (foods ranging from fruits to Big Macs) - it is called the CSI or Cholesterol Saturated Fatty Acid Index. You use the book as a reference or as a cookbook: pages of foods are listed by category, with their CSI, and number of grams of fat; the recipes are well-written and tasty. The index is complete and easy to access. I use this book constantly for the education of my patients with hyperlipidemia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood Type Diet and Lupus
I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus in 1988.The only solution for my problems was to take antibiotics, steroids and Quianine (sp?) for the skin rash. All of these drugs caused other problems and never made me feel better. In 1999, I began the blood type diet and today I am healthier than I have ever been.I have energy, I never take prescription drugs and I exercise everyday.I take supplements, follow the diet and do accupuncture to keep my system strong and healthy. The people who don't follow the diet continue to be ill and progressively get worse. Many have died...and that is unnecessary. If you have Lupus and are looking for answers TRY this book. What can it hurt? You have probably tried everything else with limited success.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD RECIPES, GREAT CONCEPT
The strong points of this book are the concept of blood type and diet, and the nutritious recipes.Whether one is trying to lose or maintain weight, or simply choosing their foods more carefully because they are health conscious, the book is beneficial. This book, like Dr. Peter D'Adamo's "Eat Right" series is based on the concept of eating right for your blood type.5-0 out of 5 stars Khader proves it again!
Dina Khader's first published book is a long-awaited gem.Her earlier work crafting the recipes for Peter D'Adamo's now-classic "Eat Right 4 Your Type" has evolved as her experience and precision have grown. This work is a must read for those desiring a comfortable change to theirdiets with radically effective results.Khader's delicious recipes andcompelling writing will satisfy the most doubtful critic.Following hersuggestions, I have greatly improved my circulation and lost several minorailments. This contribution to the field of nutrition literature is animportant launching point for an increasingly important voice in the field. Read this book, apply its lessons and feel good again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book
I've been experimenting with orthomolecular nutrition for several years, and found Dr. Haas' book to be an invaluable resource. He gives ample information about each vitamin, mineral, etc. including deficiency and toxicity symptoms. It has been a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
This book gives tons of information about different diets, all the vitamin, nutrients, water, air, etc.... I learned so much! I read the whole thing in a little over a week, I spent at least 2-3 hours a day reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "You don't kick a dead dog."
Dale Carnegie used to say this to help people accept opposition. Inspite of all opposition Linus Pauling takes on the counter arguments and cuts right to the facts. This is brilliant. Somehow people who didn't make it to a Nobel Prize seem to feel elevated when they run down Pauling's research. They remind me of Mark Twain: "The researches of many commentators have already thrown much darkness on this subject, and it is probable, if they continue, we'll soon know nothing at all about it."Pauling's research is not the only realm where this takes place. And I see a lot clearer why his work is great work. The book tackles the foes with mere facts. I can't but admire him after reading this book. As a byproduct I received splendid ideas and direction on how to live longer and feel better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book by a brilliant scientist !!
Pauling is inspiring and passionate about his nutritional theory. He supports his thesis with convincing evidence and well researched arguments. His book is a must read for every individual that harbors a deep interest in optimum health and nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Your Way to Health
I am a culinary student at Le Cordon Bleu, and I just finished my required class on nutrition. This book was most helpful in understanding and supplementing my studies regarding phytochemicals, disease prevention and recipe development. I borrowed it from the library and have renewed it twice, and I love the page per food format for quick reference to see what your favorite meals can do for your health. I have asthma and allergies, and I found out that I should be making meals with amaranth, avocados, quinoa and sunflower seeds (page 141) because they supply magnesium, which may help relax muscles in the lungs. I found that I should be eating apples, berries, cherries, and red onions, which contain quercetin, which has an ability to reduce histamine. I found that I should be incorporating Brazil nuts, fish, oysters, and sunflower seeds again because of their selenium content, which also happens to be an antioxidant, and low selenium blood levels have been found in asthmatics. Finally I found that I should be increasing my consumption of broccoli, citrus fruits, peppers and strawberries, containing vitamin C, which helps reduce the harmful oxidants in the envoronment that can worsen allergy and asthma symptoms. I will be adjusting my menus accordingly! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much "alternative" info
Some of the stuff in here was really screwy. It's not a handbook to the "Food and Mood" book by Elizabeth Somer, which is what I thought it was when I bought it. It's a separate program entirely. This one is too woozy and non-Western for me. Very little hard data to back up what they say, just kind of fruity and flowery. ... Read more
