1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrible!
This book is so disappointing! It is terribly written, much more like a pamplet than a book. There is so little information that the book contains a 2 inch margin at the top and bottom of every page, plus repeats the complete name of the book and author on every page, then also has many pages that are almost completely blank! The 107 pages could easily be covered in 25 pages, but even then it would not be worth reading!

1-0 out of 5 stars Needed a proofreader!
It is unfortunate that Holtzclaw's important message is lost in such a mess. The main problem with this book is that it is so riddled with spelling, gramatical and punctuation errors, that it is impossible to read without becoming irritated.Did she not have an editor?Didn't anyone bother to actually read through the manuscript before sending it off to a printer? Also, there is not enough substance here for a book in the first place and the author ends up saying the same things over and over again to fill up the pages.I found this to be a very frustrating read on many levels and I'm sorry I wasted my money on such an amateur effort!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic Pill: A Mental Health Companion for the Gastric Bypass Patient
This book was recommended to me by my personal therapist because she wanted to know my opinion of the book. It is wonderful to read a book written by a therapist who has been through the surgery and used the gastric by-pass procedure as a tool, not the cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars My nutrition bible
As a Clinical Dietitian, this book has been helping me through my workwith hospitalized patients and ambulatory patients. For every conditionthere is a nutritional answer. Especially excellent is the pediatricsection, not available in many manuels. The book is written clearly and iswell understood even for those whom English is not a mother tongue. Thedescriptions are brief, and for each dietary treatment there is a rational. Most recommended for professionals and can be helpful for non-professionalsas well.Waiting for the updated edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts to the essentials
The book is short because Barnard has spared us anecdotes, padding, andlengthy but irrelevant personal testimony. This book gets down to brasstacks immediately, is clearly presented, and makes total sense. I'mimpressed not only by the book but also by the success of the method andits common-sense simplicity. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful in its sensible simplicity
Even if you do not have a "weight problem," this book deserves a place on every person's bookshelf. The concepts and ideas in this book are not new, although they will certainly be new to many; some may even find them "radical."Dr. Barnard advocates a vegetarian diet in order to stay healthy and at a desirable weight. If you follow the advice in this book, you will undoubtedly lose weight and look and feel MUCH better than you ever have. The truth is that most people eat food that does not promote health or a good weight.Dr. Barnard shows you how you can eat foods that are good for you, foods that will make you feel good, and in the process, you will lose weight and keep it off. This is not a "diet" in the sense that you must restrict your calories. This is a diet in the sense that you make intelligent, sensible food choices, EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT, and lose weight without ever feeling hungry. It's true! After eating the way that Dr. Barnard recommends in this book (no animal products), I lost ten pounds in several weeks, and I have kept those pounds off, without ever feeling hungry.I eat as much as I want, and I don't gain weight.Try it out for yourself, and see that it works. If you don't see a change after trying this book out, write me an email and tell me what happened. I have many good tips for eating this way. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too restrictive for less than the extremist!!
I have read many books on nutrition, and have been through some restrictive programs in my day, but this book is WAY beyond restrictive.I became dizzy with all the information and the do's and the don'ts, and the how's and the why's.This book is supposed to be a "daily regimen for healthy living", yet it outlines a time-consuming schedule of not only how and what to eat, but he also tells the reader that they need to "brush" their skin daily, what kind of clothes to wear, how and when to take a shower, and drink "Veal Joint Broth" -- it's almost maddening to read the book and even more maddening to think of my life lived in such intensity and restriction! When I got to the "suggested" menus, I finally knew that this "regimen" was not for me.Except for fresh fruits and vegetables, almost all menu items can only be found in a high-end health food store, so if you shop at a regular food chain store like me, or depend on a realistic food budget (don't we all?) -- then this book isn't for you either! If you drink "Dandelion Coffee", eat "Baked Carrot Loaf" or "Muesli with Goat's Milk", then this book is for you.Dr. Jensen gives the same sound advice as others do (e.g. eat fresh fruits and veggies, exercise, drink plenty of water and get good rest, etc.), but it is his sound advice taken to the extreme. How can we balance work, kids, home, church, friends, social life -- and then have the time, or energy, to live by his extremely structured regimen? This may have helped many, or only just a few, but I sure wish I had seen this kind of review before I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have read most of Bernard Jensen's books and reviewed dozens of other health books over several years. This book as most of the other Jensen books all have some things that the others do not.It may be in the elaboration of the information, the subject itself or the manner of explaining some aspect of nutrition or the body, but all the information serves to reinforce.I am well pleased with this book in particular as it addressed 'slant board' use, missing nutrients in the foods commonly eaten, when to eat what types of whole foods. The four and a half pages on the lymph drainage system is worth the price of the book all by itself.5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Dr. Jensen

Editorial Review

Although our digestive systems evolved over tens of millions of years, in the last hundred years our food choices have changed drastically. Something's wrong with that picture, and our intestines are making us pay the price, with gas, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, and worse. This book, written by a respected gastroenterologist, presents sample dietary programs for the aforementioned problems and many more. It's all very straightforward and easy to follow and is based on the latest nutritional research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Foods for Bad Stomachs by Janowitz
The author discusses the all-important food pyramid consisting5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by Dr. Janowitz
Janowitz performs a real service with his books.Good Food is an accurate, detailed discussion of IBS and diet.It covers a lot of ground so it probably cannot be easily read in one sitting. It's the kind of reference book that you'll go back to time and time again. The index is very well done so it's very useful.4-0 out of 5 stars The Usual Good Resource from a Good Writer
While Janowitz covers many digestive problems in this book, I was specifically interested in Chapter 12: What Should We Feed the Inflamed Intestine? Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease. He spends a great dealof time outlining a "low-residue" diet as well as a low-oxalatediet, both of which are purported to assist persons suffering from IBD. Since both diets are quite nutritionally sound, they are certainly worthtrying and his discussion on lactose sensitivity is one of the mostbalanced I've read. With only one chapter pertaining to IBD, it might bemore practical to request this book interlibrary loan rather than purchaseit, but if you have other family members with other digestive problems, theother chapters may have increased relevance and applicability! ... Editorial Review

As many enthusiasts have discovered, it's easy to lose weight on the low-carb diet. But keeping the weight off requires an ongoing commitment--not an easy feat when faced with dieting drudgery, dinners out, holiday gatherings, and demoralizing eating binges. While many low-carb diet books offer the initial thrill of weight loss, this book is a lifelong manual, offering tips and guidance to keep readers committed for the long haul.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but a little on the excessive side
I am new to low-carb dieting, and have resisted because of all of the hype.Decided to give sensible low-carb a try, and wanted a book with some, duh, sensible advice. The guidance is pretty good, some good sources for low-carb foods, but over the edge in some regards."Practical" advice for dining out - ask for a sample of the food you're thinking of ordering, chew it up, spit it on a special stick, and if the sugar is too high, ask for something else. This is the kind of guidance you'd give to people who might die if a sugar gram accidentally passes their lips, not to those who want to get some pounds off their butt (and actually keep their friends around). The author also subscribes to a whole array of products to take to stave off those accidental carbs. This book wasn't as much practical guidance to me as it was just another over-the-edge book, but this time written by a "regular" person, not a doctor hawking his latest program.

4-0 out of 5 stars I threw out my other low-carb book
I'm really impressed with the breadth of knowledge Fran McCullough presents in the book. I wish she'd cite her sources. One sidebar about the effects of sugar says that normal body cells require oxygen and a little sugar to function, but cancer cells require lots and lots of sugar. I was pretty impressed with that little factoid. But where'd it come from? 5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
When I first started to read this book, I thought some of the author's ideas were off-base, and considered selling this book used. However, a few months later, I read about the South Beach Diet, and also bought that book.I had lots of luck w/the diet, and feel great.I then looked at this book with new eyes, and think it really compliments the South Beach regimen.McCullough's book is nice because she adds touches to recipes that are lacking from the South Beach book. She also has an infectious enthusiasm, and obviously loves food and cooking--a fellow chow hound!Generally, I've found the recipes easy to make and have most of the ingredients on hand at home. There have been a few disappointments, but those have been far outweighed by the recipes I like.I made the Mexican soup last night (it only took 30 minutes), and plan to make the walnut soup later this week. She has some amazing recipes for salmon, and unusual (and incredibly delicious) vegetable recipes, including one for zucchini.I will definitely buy other books she has written. ... Editorial Review

This small guide through the dietary principles of macrobioticsis loaded with the fundamentals of the diet, but it also offers soundadvice on healthy eating. The macrobiotic diet focuses on whole grains, fresh vegetables, and natural (i.e., not refined) foods, along with theprinciples of yin and yang that govern the philosophy--all of which areexplained clearly and succinctly: "A basic tenet of macrobioticthinking is that all things--our bodies, foods, and everything else--are composed of yin and yang energies....macrobiotic practiceemphasizes the two food groups--grains and vegetable--that have theleast pronounced yin and yang qualities, making it easier to achieve amore balanced condition within the natural order of life."Although macrobiotics is more than a diet--in fact, its principles canbe applied to all areas of life--this book focuses on its applicationsto diet and health. A macrobiotic regimen promises many blessings, among them greaterenergy, relief from pain and illnesses, renewed enjoyment of food, amore fulfilling sex life, and improved sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Guide To Macrobiotics.
The Pocket Guide To Macrobiotics is the perfect start to understanding the yin and yang of the diet.It explains the meaning of macrobiotics, the basic ideas behind the diet, how it can be used in everyday life, to heal, to gain energy, to help keep the body healthy. While published in 1997 it still makes total sense. It is flexible yet I have to warn you it will not be an easy regimen to follow at first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Don't miss this small, pocket-sized volume if you need a thorough introduction to the principles and philosophy of macrobiotics.Without including any recipes, author Carl Ferre has done an excellent job condensing the most important aspects of marcobiotics into this handy book.An easy read, keep it in your purse or jacket pocket to peruse when you have a few spare minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I found this!
This book provides a great deal of information on beginning and sustaining a macrobiotic diet and is written in a clear, concise manner. It speaks positively about small dietary changes and never stoops to belittling other diets. When I bought the book, I knew absolutely nothing about the macrobiotic way of life. When I put it down, I had a good working knowledge.Read more

The service itself was great but with the minimal info that I was given, I thought I was buying the correct item when I was actually buying the older version of the book. A more detailed discription of the product would clear that up.

This text is very detailed, which is good, but is missing some important information, which is bad.If you want simple facts, the expense of this book is too much for the benifit you will get from it.If you want details, especially ones that are easy to find, this is not the book for you.It also does not do a good job of objectivity as the quthors political views are very apparent in the text. ...
