2-0 out of 5 stars Not for cancer recovery
This book was a huge disappointment to someone trying to take care of a cancer patient. It is, in essence, a re-hash of the familiar food pyramid guidelines that advise low-fat, low-protein and high-carbohydrate diets, organized around specific cancers. The scientific basis, if there is one, relates to epidemiologic studies of cancer risk.It might be helpful to someone who is trying to reduce their risk of various cancers by altering their dietary habits, but I doubt if this book has much more to offer than most of what has been published on that topic over the past several years. It has no scientific grounding for those who already have cancer, and may in fact suggest dietary patterns that would undermine the nutritional needs of those who are already in treatment, when fats and proteins may be friends. For someone undergoing cancer treatment, or in recovery from that ordeal, it has very little to offer that the hand-outs in your doctor's office don't already tell you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of its kind
This is an excellent book. It allows cancer patients and their caregiversto understand why certain foods and eating styles may help or hurt. It alsoprovides sample recipes to start the patient along in modifying his/herdiet.

Nutrition for Sport and Exercise is a very well written, very well edited book. All authors wrote contributions that flowed seamlessly from one to the next, and each individual contribution was well written. What I likedmost was that, after finishing the book, I trusted the authors. They gavereasoned and well-documented discussions of the covered topics.Read more

I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed.Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.5-0 out of 5 stars 34 lbs. in 3 Months!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and concise nutritional ready-reference
Healing Nutrients is a layman's nutritional guide that will show you how to treat a list of health conditions and increase your immunity level through food and food supplements. The book, for the most part, is organized by body system - the circulatory, immune, nervous, reproductive, endocrine, skeletal, digestive, muscular, excretory, and respiratory systems. The text covers both common ailments such as allergies or wrinkling and more serious diseases such as cancer or AIDS.The author, Patrick Quillin, holds Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate degrees in nutrition and is a registered and licensed dietitian (RD & LD) and Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) with the American College of Nutrition. He has written several books on nutrition and healing, including Beating Cancer with Nutrition (revised edition coming out this month). His guidelines and solutions are practical, e.g., to prevent, treat and perhaps cure arthritis, (1) eliminate meat, milk and wheat for two weeks to see if it improves arthritic symptoms (an elimination diet can help many arthritics), (2) experiment with a vegetarian regimen which can be effective and (3) place special emphasis on beans for their sulfur content.A list of daily supplements that may help arthritics is also provided. All of Quillin's assertions are supported by scientific studies that he amply explains and references.Anyone interested in eating the foods, vitamins and minerals that will improve their health will find Healing Nutrients an easy-to-use, concise yet complete ready-reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the first step to our son's recovery
Two days after my son was diagnosed with autism, I dragged my mom to the library to see if I could find out what in the world this meant to us.One of the first books that we stumbled on was this book by Karyn Seroussi. After reading several excerpts about her son to my husband, we agreed that we saw a lot of parallels in our own son.By the end of the weekend, we decided to take a leap of faith and implement the GFCF diet that Ms. Seroussi described.
1-0 out of 5 stars Huge guilt trip!
I read this book to try and find more help for my son with autism. After learning about the diets I realized they would be nearly impossible for my family to implement. These diets are very expsensive and my son would probably refuse to eat most foods and recipes talked about in the book.Realizing this I felt extremely guilty that I wasn't willing to do everything possible for my son. I have had my son in early intervention, speech therapy and a very demanding and structured program for over 3 years. These therapies have made a world of difference for him but he is still autistic. So, if I am unable to put him on this diet does this mean I have failed him as a mother?I don't think so.We can only do what we are all capable of doing for our children. We shouldn't be made to feel guilty if we don't do everything that everyone else has done.It would be nearly impossible to try every single thing suggested for helping to improve symptoms of, or even "cure", autism.I say give yourself a big pat on the back if you are doing the best you can for your child with ASD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and PDD: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery
Excellent book! A must read for any parent (or teacher) of a child with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) or any neurodevelopmental delays, ADHD or allergies. It reads like a suspense novel, with the author/mother as detective, desperately, yet thoroughly trying to find clues to her son's sudden demise. Through her dedication and persevearance, she finds successful treatment for her son, and unravels a series of inexplicable biological mysteries involving foods, allergies, vaccines, viruses and their serious effects on the developing brains of children. It is a wake-up call to what we have previously viewed as "genetic" and "untreatable" and should make the medical community seriously abandon this old paradigm and put effort into establishing a new paradigm, where a causal relationship exists between ASD and its related disorders and biological and environmental triggers. This paradigm shift would dramatically alter the management of children diagnosed with ASD today and in the future. This book shows the power of a determined parent - reminiscient of the story of "Lorenzo's Oil". The moral of the story - don't rely on your child's doctor to tell you about this mode of treatment, or on any nutritional management - they are not prepared to do so. Traditional AMA medicine is geared towards quick diagnosis, treatment with drugs, and possibly some therapies. Often this involves treatment of symptoms, not cause. This book also made me wonder just how many 'troubled' or behaviorally challenged children could benefit from dietary changes, not medication. Mrs. Seroussi has done a great service to autistic and neurodevelopmentally challenged children and their parents. She has put into words an alternative choice for parents and offers hope, something the medical profession as a whole has not only not offered, but at times has suppressed. ... Read more
