1-0 out of 5 stars This is scientific medicine?
I recently viewed the new chapter concerning 'naturopathic philosophy' [in the 3rd edition, 2005] within this text at the University of Bridgeport's library, as there's a naturopathic school there that I attended. The chapter discusses the premises of 'the naturopathic.' Do you really want to be treated by a physician who conflates (blends) supernatural, nonscientific, scientifically discarded, idealistic, metaphysical, religious and scientific information -- and presents the whole thing as [supposedly] scientific?[a misrepresentation].Check out "The Epistemic Conflation of a School of Thought Claiming to be Scientific" and "Why I Dropped Out of Naturopathy School" - online per me, Rob Cullen.[THIS is future healthcare? I disagree, these prophets are truly 'facing backward']. I'm highly ethically disturbed by this text and naturopathy, still. I'll just make one point about this book's contention that complexity, self-regulation, and evolution [yes, evolution! with evolution the culmination of 'methodological naturalism,' which is HOW science approaches phenomena, that is: SCIENCE DOES NOT INVOKE THE SUPERNATURAL, it determines its contents based upon EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE, and exceptionally LEAN explanatory approaches {per parsimony:'do not multiply entities needlessly'; that is, if not ascribed by the evidence, IT ISN'T SCIENTIFIC}] indicate that life defies the laws of natural science -- particularly the second law of thermodynamics, per physics, in terms of life as supposedly being antientropic as indicated by life's evolving complexity [p.081-082] -- therefore justifying, particularly, vitalism and its handmaiden teleology-finalism [beliefs essential to 'the naturopathic'; explanations no longer within science at all; rejected-knowledge in terms of the scientific]. Ah, problem. The second law deals with closed systems and life's context is within an open system, in terms of thermodynamics. [For the compliance of the 'living' with thermodynamic law, see Atwater & Rosa's work in 1897 which specifically speaks in terms of the first law {the Kinesiology Dept. of Rice University has a nice web page on biological thermodynamics}; and see 'Biological Thermodynamics' ISBN 0521795494 {p.321 specifically speaks in terms of the second law}]. UB says NDs practice "scientific medicine" and naturopathy is "health science."Hmmm, what kind of [supposed] science text gets something so simple WRONG? Naturopathy is a 'self-labeled science-based' area that won't let go of what has not been considered scientific [the supernatural, the metaphysical, the idealistic, the scientifically-refuted and -discarded -- and kind; i.e., the tenets of their doctrines] for several decades PLUS.This text reflects naturopathic 'epistemic mislabeling nonsense' [e.g. naturopathy's vitalism ("life force"), spiritism ("personal spiritual development; body, mind, spirit"), teleology-finalism ("intelligent, purposeful") and 'whatever else idealism' AREN'T science-based (or even empirical phenomena, as in therefore 'not scienceable'). In reality, minimally, a mandatory, manipulable, spiritual, 'underlying' {metaphysical, supernatural, idealistic and what-not}, 'life force' {of many aliases} immediately responsible for states of health and disease is INSTEAD an ARTICLE OF FAITH {aka 'sectarian medicine'}].Hmmm: "the most thoroughly researched and carefully referenced text on natural medicine has been revised to include the most up-to-date information..." It has been a couple of months since I read that chapter, and I'm still, honestly, LAUGHING OUT LOUD. Naturopathy is, essentially, a 'supernatural science' (an oxymoron; particularly, vital-force-spirit, spiritism, and teleology-finalism as "science-based" are arrived at through a radical unlimiting of the boundaries of 'the scientific'); while evidence from science doesn't support the supernatural, the metaphysical, or the idealistic; and vitalism and spiritism, in terms of physiological agency, are refuted biological hypotheses.-rc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
The third edition of the Textbook of Natural Medicine is an extraordinary accomplishment. This will be seen as the moment when natural medicine truly took its place at the forefront of modern healthcare.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Credibility
Much like the naturopathy school founded by one of the authors, this book LOOKS slick, professional and science based. But, a closer look reveals a lack of any real substance.Far too much emphasis is put on questionable diagnoses.Though the treament sections looks to be well referenced, many of the studies cited don't support the author's assertions and others are outright irrelevant! Many of the disease monographs recommend a shoppingbag full of supplements--Polypharmacy at its worst.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any practioner dealing with musculoskeletal disor
This text is a must for any practioner who wants to learn about musculoskeletal medicine. The text integrates the diagnostic strength of Cyriax'Orthopaedic Medicine, the energy of Chinese Medicine, the ligamentdiagnostics of Hackett, Ongley and Dorman, Travell's Myofascial Pain, thebiochemistry of nutrition, and the spinal diagnostics and philosophy ofOsteopathy. This is a massive work that encompasses andcoalesces the manyand seemingly disparate fields that any sophisticated practitioner needs toknow. The information is useful both for understanding multiple approaches, and as "how to" book for performing many of the recommendedprocedures. It is not a book that will languish shelf but will be well wornby continued use. Bravo and well done!5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent integration of Western and Oriental orthopedics
Dr. Marcus synthesizes three systems of discipline- energetic, medical and functional in a very coherent manner. It is an extremely difficult task to integrate Western orthopedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, butI believe that Dr. Marcus has done a beautiful Job. This book is the firstof his kind and is an important addition to Western literature.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A NICE POCKET BOOK
IF YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR ACUPUNCTUREPOCKET BOOK YOU WILL FIND A VERY NICE ONE. WITH PRECISE ILLUSTRATIONS AND PHOTOS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for beginners
Caroline's review is true, but this book was not what I expected. It describes only some selected points after showing all points on a full human picture. That is why it is not for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A quality book
I was a bit dubious about buying this book as I have a lot of books on acupuncture already and no one had reviewed it.The reason I was considering it was mainly because of the ear acupuncture, which is often not covered in much detail in mainstream acupuncture books.Anyway, about a year after looking at it (since it was always popping up when I was browsing), I took the plunge - and it was well worth it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book all Craniosacral Therapist should own!
If you are trained in Craniosacral Therapy, especially under Upledger's model, this book is for you! If you found Upledger's book a bit dry or difficult to plod through and not an easy resource or want more information ont how CST and restrictions relate to all of the organ sytems, glands, tissues and diseases this book is a must have. It is very, very informative and difficult medical concepts are broken down to an understandable level. It made the lightulbs go off in my head. Once you can feel the CS pulse you can use this book to learn how to heal more than you ever imagined. You do not need the first volume,if you are already a CST.If you are not, but are any type of energy practioner the first volume would be a good resource to have, but this second volume can stand alone.I love this book.It is well worth every penny it costs! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best.
This is the best book on Reiki I've read. Miles writes with eloquence and supreme understanding in a way that (as the title suggests) is comprehensive and enjoyable to read. I strongly recommend this book to both those who have experienced Reiki and those who haven't and are curious. You will learn all you need to know from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide.
This is an essential resource for anyone interested the practice of Reiki. Miles is clearly a leader in the field and this book is testament to it. Thank you Ms. Miles for expanding my life with this compassionate piece of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on Reiki
This is possibly the best book on Reiki that I have read. Well developed and well written, Miles brings a much needed degree professionalism to the Reiki literature. Some of my Reiki clients want to understand more about how Reiki works and I have hesitated to share some of my Reiki books with them for a variety of reasons. However, this is a book that I won't hesitate to recommend. ... Read more

I agree with "Beyond Expectations", the author put alot of work into this book. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond expectations
Having a bookshelf full of books on Thai Massage & Traditional Thai Healing, this is by far my favorite. I was introduced to Pierce's writing thru his first book "A Thai Herbal" and was impressed but I feel Encyclopedia of Thai Massage is by far his best work. You can feel his passion for preserving Thai Massage as a traditional form of Thai Healing thru it's pages. I also appreciate that it is based soley on just that, the traditions of Thailand w/o real outside influences. I was amazed with the extensive photography, charts and cross refrences. As a TM practioner the charts on page 195 and 207 of correlations of symptoms, acupressure points and sen lines are great to reference. I'd say no matter if you are a beginner or advanced practioner this is really the best book out there if you are interested in truly preserving the art of classic thai massage!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
It is obvious that this author has a solid knowledge of Thai Massage on both an academic and experiential level. His explanations of technique are easy to understand. The photographs shown are detailed.Contraindications are addressed and common practitioner errors discussed.I especially appreciate his advice to use the text as a supplement to more formal instruction...proof of his passion to maintain the integrity of the art of Thai massage. Thanks Pierce!I'm sure that your teachers are quite proud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jampacked full of info and knowledge about TCM and how it correlated to helping achieve a successful pregnancy
I was referred to this book by a fellow friend who like me, is trying to conceive a baby over 40.This book talks with detail about how chinese medicine works and in particularly to help "strengthen" our reproduction systems. The information is very clear and detailed and can help anyone starting to explore the benefits of TCM. It enlightens the reader because it never dismisses the Western medical community, but talks about how the Eastern methods of TCM can enhance our already traditionally accepted practice of conventional medicine. It also talks about how TCM works well alone. However, it takes diligence and specialized practitioners to fully incorporate all of this info to practice.Finding a excellent Acupuncturist or Chinese doctor seems integraland the information is amass. I felt I learned quite a bit about Chinese medicine in just one night of reading, and I was already educated in many areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book on depression
If you're looking to treat depression without using drugs, this is the book to get.The book is packed with almost every type of therapy known to cure depression. If there's any academic research on the subject, Baumel mentions the study and also tells us whether it's an uncontrolled or controlled study (something I appreciate as an academic). He usually explains how the study was conducted in enough detail that it can be replicated at home. This means that he included supplement dosages and length of time needed to see results. He also mentions how to purchase St. John's Wort and light therapy devices, which could save hundreds of dollars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fixes a lot of myths, a must have for Dr's and smart people
This is defintely an overall positive book on a very negative topic. The author here explains a lot of different ways that you can get the serotinin back to normal without having to deal with drug therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEST OF THE CHOICES
As a psychologist wanting my clients to be educated on the biochemistry of depression and possible solutions, I have found this to be the best of all the alternatives I have read.It discusses all the treatments rather than focusing on one alone, as many books do.It is well written, easy to understand, and treats the reader as if he or she is intelligent enough to grasp a good deal of information.I think this book would help everyone in therapy, and would also help therapists in their attempts to help. ... This book, and its partner vol 2, form probably the most comprehensive herbal materia medica available. I find that I refer to it whenever I prescribe herbs to a patient and I would not be without it. Peter Holmesdescribes each herb from a Western and an Eastern viewpoint, includingenergetics, modern chemistry and historical perspectives. Uses are alsodescribed from both angles, with both Chinese traditional descriptive termsand modern western allopathic terms. He goes a long way towards a fullyintegrated world herbal medicine system. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great learning experience!
The wonderful and numerous color pictures, the mass amount of info. I have been waiting for a textbook like this for years. My students have found the text very useful and important when studying for exams. This book has made my school maintain its high standard for its curriculum. My instructors have found it to be straightforward and unproblematic to teach from. I can't wait for more from Sandy Fritz! Wonderful I will recommend to all in the profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot
I am just finishing massage school and used this textbook. The way the information was explained and the learning activites helped so much. All the information about the sciences related to massage making the reading interesting. The chapters on muscles and biomechanices were especially interesting.Even if you have used a different anatomy and physiology text book I really suggest you get this one to understand how the information relates to massage

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this!!
Where do I begin?Poorly written, concepts partially explained then abandoned, useless index, inanely esoteric exercises. If you are writing a science book why not present the facts in a logical fashion.I read the intro & preface & I know what they were trying to achieve but they failed.Classmates with & without science backgrounds were equally appalled by the uselessnes of this text!Every classmate gave it a thumbs down. Can't believe my school was duped into using this book. ... Editorial Review

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer. 4-0 out of 5 stars Advertised as New but was used
This is not a review but a critique. The book was advertised as new and I paid the "new" price, but it was used. There were several pages with penciled-in answers. The book itself is Murray's usual fine work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and full of inconsistencies
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine."Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, Be Happy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Spirits for Inspiration and Healing
I found Lorie Dechar's Five Spirits to be breathtaking in the way it presents a new vision and context for healing. When talking about the ephemeral "spirits" of Chinese Taoist thought (which are guideposts on our journey, like the chakras), she shows that the journey downward that includes the parts of ourselves that seem most chaotic and where we have least control is a journey to true integration. I read this book after a recent illness, and it helped me to turn toward deep forces for healing within myself. With many case histories and graphics, this book is also a joy to read -- entertaining, engaging and beautifully written! 5-0 out of 5 stars A real gem
I love this book and the way Franklyn Sills expresses the osteopathetic and craniosacral principles with holographic theory and trauma skills. He very effectively interweaves models and principles associated with the Breath of Life and new models ofworking with shock and trauma. The emphasis on the fluids and fluid tides brings abalance to the more structurally oriented craniosacral texts. I am a psychotherapist and find the principles articulated in this book extremely helpful in working with shock and trauma as well as accessing more vibrant health and creativity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
Being a strong believer of Cranial Work, I was very excited to see a new book on the topic. However, I was disappointed that this book is basically just Sutherland's Cranial Osteopathy and Upledger's CranioSacral Therapy repackaged. It's very disappointing that as Cranial work is getting more and more accepted, so many authors are simply reinventing the wheel and calling it their own.The initial work of Sutherland and the subsequent developments of Upledger have yet to be substantially changed or enhanced by any other authors in the cranial field that I have found.Until then, my recomendation is to stick with works by Sutherland and Upledger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trust in the Potency
Cranial Sacral Biodynamics is a wonderfully arranged book on the subject of Cranial Sacral Therapy which includes some excellent sections on Trauma Skills and clear illustrations of the techniques presented. Franklin's work marks a progression in the art of Cranial Sacral reading materials. Cranial Sacral Biodynamics is easily accessible to the beginner and will remind the most skilled practitioner of the essentials of this amazing technique. Most practitioners of Cranial Sacral work are familiar with the dedication and pioneering work of Upledger in bringing this much needed therapy to the forefront of modern healing. Those who have studied with Upledger or those who are new in arriving at this system of healing will be delighted with the ease and adeptness of this volume in conveying the foundations necessary to learn Cranial Sacral Therapy. I myself have been a student of the authors teachings and can attest to the power and effectiveness of his use of the inherent treatment plan and the safety of allowing the clients body to build Potency while re-establishing free/balanced flow of the Cranial Sacral system. The techniques presented on Focusing and Centering are essential to Bodyworkers of all disciplines. The skills contained within this study will help a practitioner establish a sacred healing presence which will enhance communication, healing efficiency, ethical standards, and allow the unfoldment of the Breath of Life in their professional practise and personal living. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life
I got several books, videos and audio tapes from Serge Kahili King but his "instant healing" , which I have labelled "it never happened" technique - saved my life several years ago, when half of my face became paralyzed and when doctors told me that I'll just have to accept it and that it may even get worse over time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Great view of connective tissue as a physical structure
Before I read this book I had never really considered the functioning of connective tissue as a "web-like" structure within which bone and muscle articulate. The authors contend, starting with embrionic anatomy and onward, that the c.t. forms a bed within which cells differentiate. From this view point of c.t. being a primary base for physical form, we areshown how all parts of the web are connected, and create "bands"that ideally are nether too tight or too loose.I didn't know much aboutRolfing either, but apparently this bodywork deals specificly with c.t. Good book, great publishing company. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest introduction to QiGong practice
This book is arguably the very finest introduction currently available to the practice of QiGong, especially for those who do not have access to a trustworthy living teacher. QiGong's burgeoning popularity has generated a plethora of both violently skeptical and credulously New-Agey essays. Rather than taking either on faith, you can actually experience internal Qi for yourself and make up your own mind as to its value, using this volume as a guide. Lam Kam-Chuen is one of a tiny handful of QiGong teachers who are fully qualified to write a practical instruction manual geared to the average Western person. For those who want to actually experience the truth about Qi for themselves rather than chew an academic cud of pre-digested dogma, this book is worth its weight in gold!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good coverage of the topic
This book really does a good job of explaining standing (Zhan Zhuang) and Qigong to the beginner. My sifu had recommended that I do standing practice, and had taught me a qigong set, and I found that reading this book helped me along. Some of the things (such as the Ba Duan Jin qigong set) differ slightly from the way I wastaught, but basically the book is right on the money, and does a good job of helping you understand what everything is for.I also like the warm up exercises before standing that he shows, they really do help. The book is very well illustrated also, which is a plus.Highly recommended, especially for anyone into internal martial arts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly great teaching
I should have written this review many years ago but even then this book was highly rated. Master Chuen has written without a doubt the best book on chi kung for the person who wishes to practice this skill mostly through self teaching. I've been involved in the aikido and jujitsu for over 20 years and have practiced chi kung for about half that time. I spent several years trying to obtain clear and concise instruction without much success. This book provides very specific instruction on the complete cycle of chi kung exercises taking you from beginner to the more advanced...and always safely IF you follow the instructions for each step.
