5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a book on health that teaches without preaching
I usually avoid health and fitness books like the plague [no pun intended], but this book is really and remarkably different from the run-of-the-mill health-and-fitness or alternative-medicine book.Based on a major PBS documentary, THE NEW MEDICINE BOOK is a sane, sensible, and accessible guide to how many physicians are reaching beyond the bounds of standard Western medicine to blend the best of alternative-healing and alternative-medicine with the best of traditional clinical medicine.Such seemingly simple things as doctors listening to their patients, or patients taking the initiative in asking doctors to explain their treatment, actually make a profound difference in the treatment of major illnesses. These and many other insights are presented with unobtrusive skill and in graceful, straightforward prose. The book teaches effectively without preaching at all.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information...
I found this book to be a true inspiration for me. I found out about it through one of the Massage magazines and I can honestly say it was one of the best and most important purchaces I made since I graduted from massage school in 1999.5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderfully insightful book
As a massage therapist, I was trained that massage was generally contraindicated for cancer patients. Gayle does a wonderful job of explaining why massage is appropriate, the chemistry behind metastisis and the issues around massage treatment along the continuum of cancer treatment. It also has a chapter on death and dying that I recommend to many patients. I have made this a required text in the therapeutic massage program as our local community college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I was privileged to take a weekend seminar from Gayle MacDonald, and Ipurchased the book at that time. Her amazing compassion and caring areevident in every line of this book. If you have been told that massage isnot appropriate for people living with cancer, this book will change yourthinking. The book also gives a very good basic description of the processthat cells go through to become cancerous, and de-mystifies some of thetreatments that patients go through. Medicine Hands is a practical, down toearth book that is well worth reading. It is an excellent book for anyoneliving with cancer - in one's self or in a loved one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I guess I'm the only one who wasn't totally insired by her story.I did not follow her stories in Glamour, but I am a young woman who was diagnosed with cancer in her 20s.I was expected to find a lotof situations I could relate to.There were a few, but I kind of lost interest when I felt she kept going on and on about everything she did for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.Compared to the cancer survivors I know in real life, she just seemed unreal. But then again, all the cancer survivors I know have been through chemo and/or radiation.

3-0 out of 5 stars My So-Called Normal Life
A memoir about a 23 year old girl who finds out she has cancer while she works at glamour magazine. She learns to soak in life, to love those around her, and distill the important things in life from the vain and insignificant...although she still cares about her weight! She turns her tragedy into good work and action by starting to fund raise for the cancer society and with the help of glamour magazine raises 25,000+ dollars. There is another twist in the story.Completely unrelated her sister gets cancer as well, Hodgkin's lymphoma.Unlike leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma is curable.Leukemia is not...Erin will either need a bone marrow transplant or take this new medication for the rest of her life. They struggle with issues of mortality, fertility, and love - issues that many of us are not forced to deal with until much later.Interesting, quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more interesting than you would guess!
I read all of Erin Zammett's columns in Glamour magazine, so when I came across this book I hesitated to read it - I didn't want to re-read everything that was in the columns. Plus, I thought, how interesting could reading about someone's cancer treatments be? Turns out, very interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dry and academic but intriguing and useful
I stumbled across this book from the University of California Press when I was looking for source material on "societal development." If you're a graduate student at certain universities, you'll recognize that general topic as something you may have to write 30 or 60 pages on someday. As it later happened, my "breadth" paper on societal development went in a different direction, but this book was interesting reading anyway.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Through many of the medical observations made by the authors, this book provides some interesting ideas about the connection between the mind and body. Even though we all know that stress (which comes from our minds) influences our health, many of us find it difficult to put the mind and body together in one equation. This book is a great attempt to begin making the bridge between the subjective and objective world. It is full of insightful ideas and inspiring anecdotes. Just excellent overall. If you'd like to read about a sound theoretical framework that explains many of these things, I strongly suggest "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. When I read Sato's book, everything clicked so much is was unbelievable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith in God turbo-charges our indwelling healing nature
I think what is amazing about this book is that Herbert Benson states without a doubt that faith in God is healthy for us.While our ancestors took it for granted that God healed them, as Dr. Benson explains, we have been taught to see healing purely in technical scientific terms. Dr. Benson explains that when we repudiated the importance of belief in healing we deprived ourselves of a powerful healing force.5-0 out of 5 stars The Mind/body connection
Dr Benson presents strong evidence for what others have called the "mind / body connection."Mainstream medical science has not yet recognized the importance belief plays in health but, Dr. Benson presents numerous studiesthat validate the major role belief plays in the healing process andwellness. Practitioners of complimentary therapies will find this bookespecially helpful in understanding how many non-drug based therapies canwork. Well written and thought provoking! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel and medical journal rolled into one incredible book
Ms. Stein's publication, being an outstanding balance of informative, personal and scientific material, provided me with a fresh outlook on how to perceive and deal with my ADD. For years I suffered through the many negative effects that ADD had on my adult life.Being personally averse to resorting to medication whenever possible I often dealt with the ups-and-downs, as well as with the well-wishers telling me to take the pills, take the pills, take the pills. Ms. Stein's painfully personal accounts of her own dealings with ADD are a relief to the fellow sufferer. Her book reads like a novel, informs like a textbook, and cites studies like a medical journal. It is indeed a highly recommended read for anyone who comes into personal or professional contact with, or those who have, ADD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative
I found Fragments to be moving and engaging and could not put it down! I read it straight through until I was finished! 3-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting
This a very interesting account of a woman who has AD/HD. She discusses her struggles and her journey through life with AD/HD. She tells about the different options that she has taken to help manage her AD/HD and what worked for her.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I read this book after delving into "home yoga" for about 3 months. As is probably common, I was doing many of the poses only semi-correctly. There is a lot of reading to be done here, but there isincredible detail to help anyone elicit the poses correctly. Dworkis alsodivides each pose for beginner, moderate, and advanced. After aparticularly tough day of running and 5 sets of tennis, I followed theposes and felt refreshed, relaxed, and loose afterwards. The workout isalso really only 20 minutes (after learning the poses) and fun to completeas well as challenging when striving for a more advanced level.

5-0 out of 5 stars As an exercise physiologist certified fitness instructor...
As an exercise physiologist and certified group fitness instructor/personal trainer I highly recommend this book.I have been hesitant to try yoga because of the contraindicated moves (called poses),however this book makes the necessary modifications so that the program issafe, yet still effective and fun.I have looked at many yoga books, andeven more videos and classes and this is my favorite.I actually recorded(audio) myself reading some of the descriptions of the poses so that Icould do the entire sequence with someone to "cue" me with theappropriate instructions! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I found this a really helpful book. Judy Jacka has 30 years experience as a therapist and she is a long-time student of esoteric healing and work with subtle energies. The book draws on her experience in combining esoteric healing with naturopathy, homeopathy etc. It includes lots of case studies. Chapters include: The Outer Causes of Disease; The Inner Causes of Disease; the Soul Factor in the Healing Process; The Heart Chakra, Circulatory System & Immunity; The Brow Chakra & the Nervous System. The best guide you will find exploring how Alice Bailey's ideas about esoteric healing can be applied in conjunction with other techniques. Fresh, practical, inspiring and not in any way didactic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars useful for the immediate aftermath
We had a stillborn child just one week ago. This is the first book I've read since then. I have to say that a lot of the stuff in the book was common sense, and probably because of this book and others for health care providers, today hospitals did a really good job helping us. So the book didn't give us any new information per se. I was also looking for what's next, and there is little insight into that. I'll keep reading other books to find what I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone involved with a loss.
This book can help the bereaved parents as well as the professionals who support them. Families who have experienced miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, newborn death and loss of multiples tell their stories. Chapters include: Grief, Grief within a Relationship, Saying Good-Bye, Reactions Of Others, Involving Children and Grandparents' Grief. The last few chapters help the physician, funeral director, and clergy to know what to say and do when a baby dies.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent infant loss resource
This was the first book I read after my baby was diagnosed with a fatal birth defect. I highly recommend it to anyone--parent, friend, or professional--who might have to deal with infant loss. The book talks about the grieving process, ways to find emotional support, and the ways a parent may find of memorializing a baby. There are suggestions for doctors, clergy, and funeral home staff. This book has many personal stories as well as general guidelines and ideas, keeping in mind that just as everyone would have parented their babies differently, so they will grieve and remember differently. Quite thorough book dealing with a subject many would rather not dwell on, and with many many excellent suggestions. ... Read more
