5-0 out of 5 stars Presents the history of alternative medicine in America
Nature Cures presents the history of alternative medicine in America, showing that the recent rise of alternative medicine actually reflects two centuries of competition between mainstream medicine and unorthodox systems. In providing a running history of alternative medicine, author James Whorton enables readers to analyze the progress, successes and failures of both traditional and alternative treatments. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This is scientific medicine?
I recently viewed the new chapter concerning 'naturopathic philosophy' [in the 3rd edition, 2005] within this text at the University of Bridgeport's library, as there's a naturopathic school there that I attended. The chapter discusses the premises of 'the naturopathic.' Do you really want to be treated by a physician who conflates (blends) supernatural, nonscientific, scientifically discarded, idealistic, metaphysical, religious and scientific information -- and presents the whole thing as [supposedly] scientific?[a misrepresentation].Check out "The Epistemic Conflation of a School of Thought Claiming to be Scientific" and "Why I Dropped Out of Naturopathy School" - online per me, Rob Cullen.[THIS is future healthcare? I disagree, these prophets are truly 'facing backward']. I'm highly ethically disturbed by this text and naturopathy, still. I'll just make one point about this book's contention that complexity, self-regulation, and evolution [yes, evolution! with evolution the culmination of 'methodological naturalism,' which is HOW science approaches phenomena, that is: SCIENCE DOES NOT INVOKE THE SUPERNATURAL, it determines its contents based upon EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE, and exceptionally LEAN explanatory approaches {per parsimony:'do not multiply entities needlessly'; that is, if not ascribed by the evidence, IT ISN'T SCIENTIFIC}] indicate that life defies the laws of natural science -- particularly the second law of thermodynamics, per physics, in terms of life as supposedly being antientropic as indicated by life's evolving complexity [p.081-082] -- therefore justifying, particularly, vitalism and its handmaiden teleology-finalism [beliefs essential to 'the naturopathic'; explanations no longer within science at all; rejected-knowledge in terms of the scientific]. Ah, problem. The second law deals with closed systems and life's context is within an open system, in terms of thermodynamics. [For the compliance of the 'living' with thermodynamic law, see Atwater & Rosa's work in 1897 which specifically speaks in terms of the first law {the Kinesiology Dept. of Rice University has a nice web page on biological thermodynamics}; and see 'Biological Thermodynamics' ISBN 0521795494 {p.321 specifically speaks in terms of the second law}]. UB says NDs practice "scientific medicine" and naturopathy is "health science."Hmmm, what kind of [supposed] science text gets something so simple WRONG? Naturopathy is a 'self-labeled science-based' area that won't let go of what has not been considered scientific [the supernatural, the metaphysical, the idealistic, the scientifically-refuted and -discarded -- and kind; i.e., the tenets of their doctrines] for several decades PLUS.This text reflects naturopathic 'epistemic mislabeling nonsense' [e.g. naturopathy's vitalism ("life force"), spiritism ("personal spiritual development; body, mind, spirit"), teleology-finalism ("intelligent, purposeful") and 'whatever else idealism' AREN'T science-based (or even empirical phenomena, as in therefore 'not scienceable'). In reality, minimally, a mandatory, manipulable, spiritual, 'underlying' {metaphysical, supernatural, idealistic and what-not}, 'life force' {of many aliases} immediately responsible for states of health and disease is INSTEAD an ARTICLE OF FAITH {aka 'sectarian medicine'}].Hmmm: "the most thoroughly researched and carefully referenced text on natural medicine has been revised to include the most up-to-date information..." It has been a couple of months since I read that chapter, and I'm still, honestly, LAUGHING OUT LOUD. Naturopathy is, essentially, a 'supernatural science' (an oxymoron; particularly, vital-force-spirit, spiritism, and teleology-finalism as "science-based" are arrived at through a radical unlimiting of the boundaries of 'the scientific'); while evidence from science doesn't support the supernatural, the metaphysical, or the idealistic; and vitalism and spiritism, in terms of physiological agency, are refuted biological hypotheses.-rc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
The third edition of the Textbook of Natural Medicine is an extraordinary accomplishment. This will be seen as the moment when natural medicine truly took its place at the forefront of modern healthcare.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Credibility
Much like the naturopathy school founded by one of the authors, this book LOOKS slick, professional and science based. But, a closer look reveals a lack of any real substance.Far too much emphasis is put on questionable diagnoses.Though the treament sections looks to be well referenced, many of the studies cited don't support the author's assertions and others are outright irrelevant! Many of the disease monographs recommend a shoppingbag full of supplements--Polypharmacy at its worst.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be required reading for all physicians.
"From Doctor to Healer" should be required reading for every medical student and physician. It is a classic text that clearly andconcisely definesthe paradigm shift that is occurring in medicine. Theauthors describe the characteristics of the old paradigm -"technomedicine" - and those who practice it; the bridging"humanistic" medicine with its distinguishing features; and thenew paradigm of "holistic" medicine with its defining attributes. In the process of their superb illumination of the ways in which thesetypes of medical practice differ, the authors use heart-rending andevocative interviews and comments from physicians who are stuck within theold paradigm, those who are making the shift, and those who have beenthrough the transformation and have survived in their profession.Thebook is invaluable for physicians who are feeling isolated and confusedabout the imbalances they feel in their professional lives. The stories ofother physicians who have had the same feelings and experiences, sufferedthe same wounds, felt completely alone in their anguish and longing for adifferent way to practice, will comfort and encourage readers to continueon their own paths to transformation within their profession.Patients whoare seeking to understand their physicians, or looking to find a physicianwho is ready to be a partner in their healing process will be greatlyassisted in their search by the information and insights in this book. Ihighly recommend it to anyone who has any contact with the medicalprofession. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Daily Challenges of a New York City Doctor
The art of healing requires vital communication between physician and patient. ~Francis V. Adams, M.D.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Doctor Who Listens
Dr. Adams is a pulmonologist in private practice in New York City as well as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at New York University. He gives here seven case studies of patients of his, all with serious illnesses, some whom he was able to help "heal," one who lived for many years after seeing him, a young woman who died quickly of lung cancer and a final patient who did not follow Dr. Adams' advice and died much sooner than she should have.
4-0 out of 5 stars better communication
Dr Adams gives us a set of short but memorable vignettes of a few of his patients. In mostly non-technical language accessible to many readers, he tries to convey the tribulations these patients faced. Any why he empathised with them, as part of his practice. Instead of the latter being confined to a clinically detached diagnosis and treatment, as some of his peers might do.

4-0 out of 5 stars help for becoming "grand" parents early
although i am not yet blessed to be a parent, i was entranced by this delicious book & felt compelled to invest in it now. i have enjoyed exploring different topics contained within & though i agree it is not quite as comprehensive as i would wish nor is it coming from quite the same center i am, it has truly been a delight! i must admit a big part of handing over the $20 for it was the wonderful resources listed at the end of each section. i truly believe being a part of children's development is one of the most amazing gifts we're given in this life & my heart swells with this collection that seems to echo that sentiment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as "whole" as the cover led me to believe
This isn't a bad book - in fact, it's a GREAT choice as a gift to a mainstream parent who is "teetering on the edge" of becoming a more alternative parent. It is NOT the best choice for the already-alternative parent.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
"Family life is transforming for the better for millions of American parents and children. They examine what mainstream society hands down asreceived parenting wisdom with a critical eye. They welcome theunconventional, as long as it works."And that's what this rich parentingbook that advocates whole parenting is all about. It embraces what many inthe recent past had thrown out as primitive--natural birthing, breastfeeding, natural healthcare and holistic nutrition. The authorsexamine the historical issues that contributed to the development ofparenting styles from the turn of the century on and discusses how"cultural creatives" came to be.These are families hoping to instillprogressive values in their kids in the face of commercialism, prejudice, drugs, inadequate public education and a whole host of other modern issues. This book pledges to help parents sort through the alternative parentingideas and find the ones that truly hold some answers for today's parents. It lives up to it's goal marvelously. This book recommends natural, organicand healthful eating and touches briefly on health, ethics and environmentconcerns as they relate to vegetarianism. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Patricia Telesco takes our perception of the art of healing away from the veiled realms ofTibetan monks and aboriginal shamans, and into the realm of the spiritually aware public. She contendsthat healing is not reserved for an elite few, but is a gift with which common people, from caring mothers tomedieval monks, have been blessed.Even if you don't feel the inclination to don the mantle of a healer,Telesco's honest assessment of some of the most common metaphysical healing techniques, such asacupressure and homeopathy, can be a benefit if you'veconsidered seeking an alternative to modernmedicine. ...
