5-0 out of 5 stars An important work
Soteria is the exposition of a grand experiment in the holistic treatment of schizophrenia and is recommended reading for anyone who has an interest in mental illness. When one appliesoutcomes criteria to the Soteria program, it holds up as equally effective to any of today's drug therapies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soteria's Message for today
In "Soteria: Through Madness to Deliverance," Loren Mosher and Voyce Hendrix, with Deborah Fort, paint a vivid picture of the day to day life at Soteria-House, the Northern California alternative to psychiatric hospitalization that proved it is possible to help people through madness with kindness, empathy and validating people's experiences, and most importantly, by "being with" people, rather than "doing to" them.Due to his prolific writings, Dr. Mosher has presented many scientific papers on Soteria, but in this book, the program comes to life. The failures as well as the successes are described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for open-minded healthcare practitioners!
I think this is a wonderful books and I really like the openminded approach of the author regarding a happy medium between holistic treatments and conventional ones. I do have to disagree with the other reviewer though because I do believe that this book could be easily read by the layperson. I also like that the Dr. explores the realm of oral health and the mind-body connection in diagnosing and treating GI problems. These are oft neglected areas that need to be adressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, intelligent book
One of the better books I have read.He is not a true believer in either the conventional or the alternative approach, but rather deals intelligently with each.He obviously understands both research and diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Enjoyable Tome
This book is on my shelf next to Ultraprevention, another winner in the introductory holistic genre. Quite frankly, it's amazing how most of us have the power to transform our health to optimal levels, yet so many are too skeptical, or dare I say too lazy, to do the simple things needed...eat well, keep the mind clear, etc. The solution to the problem of disease does not always have to be complicated. Nutrition especially has the potential to be as potent as medication, without the side effects.
4-0 out of 5 stars American Holistic Association Guide& The Winkle Cure
These books were required reading in my Holistic practice.I found both these books very informative.I put to practice some information found in the Wrinkle Cure book and have been getting comments that I now look 40 when in actuallity I am 62.I have been able to pass this information onto some of my patients and they are trying it on themselves. The American Holistic Association Guide reinforced some of the teachings that I had just finished in getting my degree in the Holistic Method of healing. Both books were very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best overview of holistic therapies I've ever read
I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who called this book a rehash of Burton Goldberg's Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide (which I also highly recommend). Yes, the Guide is a wonderful book, and for that matter, Trivieri, the author of this book, also served as the editor and writer for the Guide. But to call his book a "rehash" couldn't be farther from the truth. I have read over a hundred books on the subject of holistic healing/alternative medicine, and never before have I read a book that so wonderfully explains the major therapies of holistic medicine and what it means to be healthy in "body, mind, and spirit," the way Trivieri's book does. The therapies he writes about here are covered in far more depth than in the Definitive Guide, and they are explained in a manner that makes them far more understandable and credible to readers who are unfamiliar with them. The chapter on Yoga alone was an eye opener for me. What I also like about this book are the many studies cited in support of each therapy, as well as the case histories that beautifully illustrate how effective they can be.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with Kemper
I was very excited to buy this book.I have found it very useful as a mother of 4 and as a pediatric nurse practioner student.I was hoping that K. Kemper took a more intelligent and open perspective on vaccinations.Despite over 11,000 adverse advents reported each year from vaccines, scientific research showing that thimerosol caused neurodevelopmental delays, and MMR causing thrombocytopenia, orchitis, seizures, and many other problems, Kemper refuses to budge on her pro vaccine stance.I believe her experience with public health has enforced her belief that vaccines be inflicted on all despite their complications.Other than this fundamental disagreement with the author, I liked the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to avoiding the doctors office
I got the first edition of this book nearly 5 years ago when my first born was an infant. It has been incredibly useful for avoiding the doctor - who usually can't really help anyway, or wants to prescribe antibiotics too frequently.Children often run the risk of getting something even worse than what they have by a visit to the doctor's office. This book is a guide for what to do with certain situations. It helped me to make my children more comfortable while a virus ran its course. This book gave me confidence to know that I was doing that best thing for my kids and gave guidelines for when to go to the doctor.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks balance
The heading states that this book is a comprehensive guide for safe and effective therapies for childhood illnesses, though it is seriously lacking. Kemper has no experience with homeopathy so she just gives us the usual "it doesn't work" jibe.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars luckey remedies of dr. lockey
working as a homeopathic physician, mostly dealing with"clinical homeopathy", I have found many "pearls" in this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Typeface small, hard to read
One word of caution, the typeface is small and not pleasing to the eye.I returned the book because it was difficult to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars this is the book to have, but...
this is the only book to have for an immature homeopath.but, it is very disorganized.it is very difficult to find a specific ailment in this book.sometimes you have to read a chapter or two to find what you are looking for. also, Dr. Lockie in this book talks about many ailments that he does not suggests any remedies for.it just feels like waisting my time to finally find it, read a page on the ailment, and not even get any use from it.the only great thing that i find about this book, is that it shows you how to pick the right medicine without guesswork and abra-cadabra that i found so many homeopaths use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Where spirit meets scientific knowledge:
A courageous and beautiful book.A practicing psychologist, the author recalls the impact of a visit from her aged grandmother to her family's new home in LA.At her grandmother's admonition the author was called back to the healing practices she learned as a young girl in her native country Cuba. A reconnection with her beloved elder prepared her for a journey into the jungles of Mexico where she encountered her fears and strengths under the thoughtful direction of another powerful teacher. The last half of the book describes by example how the author accesses her gifts for healing blending them with her scientific knowledge of modern psychology. The end result is to bring about the therapeutic transformation of her clients. The book is challenging to our modern ideas of healing, thought-provoking.The reader will be processing the story well past the last page.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to be experienced, not merely read
This book will be an eye opener for those who put all their faith in drugs and underestimate the power of the mind and heart to heal. Dr. Miller discusses effective techniques (relaxation, guided imagery, etc.) for tapping our inner resources to bring about psychological as well as physical changes that support healing. He also explains clearly in layman's terms, the rationale behind his methods. The stories that led to the development of mind-body medicine are told with warmth and humor. This is the kind of book to read over and over again--with each reading, new insights come to mind. It has changed my approach to health and to life by giving me a sense of empowerment, by teaching me to use my mind in new and positive ways. It will probably do the same for anyone who reads it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finest book on subject
I heard the author speak and decided to buy this book.It transcended my expectations. This is the richest book I have read on the mind-body relationship. It's erudite and scholarly but it is also readable and very engaging. You probably need to have some prior interest in the mind-body field or be professionally involved to fully enjoy what Dreher accomplishes here, he really delves into the science behind mind-body medicine. He concludes that the notion of a mind-body connection is too simplistic--mind and body are completely unified. He backs this up with the latest scientific discoveries on how the mind, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems are so intertwined.Every chapter and especially the second half of the book goes into the mind-body treatments that can best influence health, and here he makes some controversial arguments that deep psychotherapy, whether individual or group, may have a more profound impact on health than isolated mind-body practices like relaxation. This book will raise your consciousness about the mind-body relationship and keep you interested throughout by discussing all the controversies in the field and what they really mean for human beings suffering from psychological or physical ill-health.It certainly raised my consciousness. ...
