5-0 out of 5 stars a great doctor
there are few books which i can recommend more than this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not to miss...!
This book is written in a lively fashion. The author is intelligent, thourough and the text is approachable and flowing.3-0 out of 5 stars A holistic approach to holistic medicine
It's fair in that it accomplishes what the title indicates - it does indeed integrate "the World's Great Therapeutic Traditions" - but it fails to adequately incorporate the world's greatest therapeutic tradition - traditional modern medicine. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Woundsmakes us real.
As a nurse that works with the terminally ill I constantly hear from the patients that they feel useless, a burden on their family, left out, diseased or not worthy. In our society we tend to focus on those that are "perfect" or "exceed".No one is perfect. Our wounds make us special. It teaches us humility, compassion, charity and love.Doug's book is about "real" people and how we are all alike in special ways.I appreciate the book showing us how we can take our wounds and become better people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thanatologist's Perspective
"This is an extremely practical book aimed at helping people USE their woundedness. As a Thanatologist, I've encountered all manner of woundedness, suffering, and misery. So often we hear the messages RUN from pain and suffering. HIDE FROM IT. TAKE A PILL. GET OVER IT.But wounds are a part of life: we cannot escape them. So Doug shows how we can USE them to become better people, how we can USE them to become better healers, how we can USE them for the benefit of ourselves and others. This is a VERY PRACTICAL BOOK!"

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Doug Smith is fabulous in person as a presenter and I was truly looking forward to reading his book.Perhaps my expectations were high, having heard him speak, but the inspiration and knowledge I was hoping to glean from his book were severely lacking. It is not well written and tends to overstate the same concept. There are better books if you are looking for any inspiration or personal growth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars one of my most used texts: an essential, agem
In day to day practice I probably refer to this book as much as many others combined: in our oncology centre about 40-60% of patients are using some form of alternative medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Professional Reference

Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Anatomy And Physiology For Holistic Therapists by Francesca Gould enables the non-specialist general reader to acquire an accurate understanding of what to expect from holistic therapy, and aspiring or practicing holistic therapists on how to enhance the clarity of complex concepts, contra-indications specifically relevant for their practice, and a wealth of useful, applicable information on the skeletal, muscular, and digestive systems of the human body. 5-0 out of 5 stars Indigenous Wisdom
This book is a sort of sequel to "Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice". In it Dr. Plotkin analyses the therapeutic potential of what the shamans know. We are in a race to learn about the creatures of the earth before they are exterminated by our modern world. These creatures can save our lives. We have learned so much, yet we know so little. The book is so well written that once you start, you can't put it down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a text book
While Mark writes with a sense of humor, I prefered the story style of Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medicine Quest Review
...Medicine Quest was an awesome book that taught me a lot, but was also very interesting. It was the kind of book you pick up dreading to read but then love it.It started out with a story about a medicine man who found a way to help diabetes. Then it went on it talked about different medicines such as penicillin which was produced from fungi, different pain killer from frogs and snakes and antibiotics from plants and even bugs.Overall I thought that it was an amazing book and I recommend it to anyone who is interesting in learning about medicine or even to someone who just wants to sit down with a good book.In this review I will map out the main points and provide an evaluation so you can see whether you want to read this book or not.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Endometriosis-Very positive, easy to read with specifics
This is a good book to read for endometriosis sufferers and anyone else into yoga because the author talks of her personal experience with the disease. She guides the reader through the body map so that one can have a better understanding of the disease and their body energy through yoga exercises. The introduction explains what the book covers and gives positive reinforcement for inspiration and encouragement. She takes a personal approach and relates this and empathizes with her audience just how she felt before she bagan doing yoga. This is very insightful and motivating. She educates the reader about the different therapies available and why endometriosis may occur. She supports the reader in comforting them with the initial phase of pursuing yoga as a healing modality. She gives the reader inspirationand helps in restructuring their cognition and enlightens their feelings and gives them a more positive outlook. The tools of the trade are explained in detail such as pranayama and meditation. The book has a conscious awareness insight that draws you in to your inner body experience. This subliminal connection decreases fears that actually cause pain. The poses are very well explained so anyone can follow along. She guides you through a diet and just how to monitor this process. I really enjoyed reading this book, it is a wonderful reference guide to have on your shelf. The book is a journey taking one from the beginning of where it all began to a world of possibilities and transformation. The book can teach you to understand your body rhythms, limitations and energy levels.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
I thought this was a terrible book. There are much better ones available on this important subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative but not particularly helpful
Lots of information about managing life threatening diseases, and information about chemo agents, and about alternative medicines etc.Lots of repetitive warnings about not using any alternative medicines while in chemo. But nothing I found helpful in doing what the book claims -- combining traditional and alternative approaches.I can understand his concern about FDA and ethical issues re giving medical device, but this was a huge disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Best of science? What science?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very unique
The Twintreess are great at what they do, and these books are more than just novelties! Marilyn and Tohmas are very knowledgeable, very sincere, and very respectable teachers. These books have some sparse illustrations, great descriptions of the minerals (in first person, i.e. "I am a basic oxide of copper..."), and new uses for our spiritual evolution.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stones Alive rocks!
This book is written with sensitivity, respect and a real love for the minerals spoken about. Clearly the authors have a deep connection to the earth and it's gifts and know what they are talking about. I learned more about each stone from this book than I have from any other stone/mineral book. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read, Re-Read and theREAD Again!!!
When I first read Stones Alive! I enjoyed it immensely, but did not "get" it all, the next time I read it - well, light bulbs came on, doors opened and it was great! Then the NEXT time I read it, I was truly amazed at the insights, the warmth and the fabulous spirit of sharing. If you have a sense of adventure

5-0 out of 5 stars A physician's review of Paradox and Healing
BRAVING THE VOID5-0 out of 5 stars lfootemd
For anyone in the healing arts who ponders and struggles with patients and their chronic diseases, this is a must read. Both authors re-evaluate the dilemna of chronic illness and pain from a holistic standpoint.Westernmedicine has fared poorly when it comes to chronic problems which isfrustrating for both "healer" and "patient".However,by reframing the approach to sickness, chronic disease can be viewed as atransformational process. Disease and healing, the authors contend, are onein the same. Conventional medicine fails to acknowledge the emotionalside of disease because of its "irrationality".We onlyrecognize the "structural" aspects of disease because of itsinherent rationality.Unfortunately the most perplexing problems inmedicine cannot be adequately dealt with by the rational approach alone. As a society, though, approaching from the irrational standpoint is taboo.By embracing both the rational and irrational, patients can begin thepersonal transformation necessary to heal themselves.A concept quiteforeign to the conventional practitioner. To quote the authors:"Transformation is a profound change of heart made possible by therenewed sense of being which comes from facing the paradoxical nature ofour existence." In order to illustrate the concept oftransformation, the authors drawn upon myths.Unlike other teaching tools, myths provide a venue for the irrational to interact with the rational. This offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate the functional andstructural aspects of illness. For the western trained mind this book canbe a revelation but for some it will certainly be considered heretical. This book matches crisp insight with a fervent mission to challenge eventhe most "holy" of western medical beliefs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Warmly recommended
Dolores Krieger takes several steps forward in this book. She shares transpersonal aspects of healing that take TT beyond the mechanistic bioenergy model of simply assessing bioenergy fields that reflect physical and psychological problems, and adjusting bioenergy states through healer intent. Yet Krieger firmly grounds the transpersonal in theory and experiential explorations, with a strong focus on teaching in a responsible way.
5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable, gentle, non-invasive healing technique
Therapeutic Touch As Transpersonal Healing by Dolores Krieger (who developed Therapeutic Touch in collaboration with Dora Kunz) is a an explanatory presentation of the practice of "Therapeutic Touch", including its origins, its applications to promote healing, and much, much more. Designed especially for hands-on therapists and a highly recommended addition to Alternative Medicine reference collections and reading lists, Therapeutic Touch As Transpersonal Healing offers a an accessible and superbly organized body of practical information, useful guidelines, and invaluable resources for anyone with an interest in learning about this remarkable, gentle, non-invasive healing technique for repairing and maintaining human health. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not as applicable as it seems
If you are truly planning on pursuing the study of Tibetan medicine as a vocation, this book is for you. If you are hoping to glean a few practical tidbits to apply toward a healthy life, it is possible...however, few is the key word. Chapter 11 was the most informative chapter in the book, talking about behavior. It's a great book explaining Tibetan medicine, not applying it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONE Book Everyone with Cancer Should Buy
People diagnosed with cancer are often inundated with books from well-meaning friends, but this is the ONLY book I've turned to throughout my entire four-year cancer journey. It has been a comfort to me to learn that my feelings about the cancer experience are not unique to me and that I am not the only person who experiences crippling doubts. "Live Larger" encourages hope, which you need to Live Larger and Longer.

Luckily, there is someone in your corner who has experience and knowledge to guide you against this towering opponent. The book offers help from Round 1 thru Round 15. The book is realistic, compasionate, and practical. The Buchholz's speak from the heart. 5-0 out of 5 stars Why can't a good textbook be beautiful? But it can!
Do you believe textbooks can't show any personality? Are you convinced reference books can't be beautiful or poetic? WRONG!!! I studied with Kiiko for a little over three years, and this book has all her attributes. It is beautifully organized and arranged, elegantly researched and argued, wide-ranging in its interests and as beautiful as any Japanese Ikebana. Everything in this volume is carefully conceived and executed, from the layout and design (even the paper is special--handle it and you'll see what I mean) to the extraordinary, handsome illustrations, to the extensive and very helpful bibliographies. They all reflect Kiiko herself and her attitude that everything in life should be done with complete attention, total organization, creativity and a sense of whimsy. If you look carefully, with an open mind, you may also notice that, when carefully considered, some of the ancient theories--when graphed--actually yield an illustration that looks startlingly like certain Western scientfic representations! (I won't spoil your fun by naming them here.) And for those of you who'd like a general summary of the text, it covers the development of acupuncture theory in Japan, the Hara (stomach palpation) diagnosis of the title, general summaries of the work of Kiiko's major teachers (including the extraordinary Dr. Manaka), and even a section on So Tai Ho, the Japanese form closely akin to chiropractic that uses gentle movements coordinated with breathing exercise to achieve pain relief and sometimes a much deeper level of healing. To top it all off, the illustrations intended to help practitioners are clear, as are the instructions. All in all, a beautiful, instructive volume. I loved it, even when I had to use it as a text in acupuncture school--and that's saying something! Whoever heard of someone loving their textbook?!! ... Read more
