5-0 out of 5 stars Spirit Body Healing
Filled with beautifully written stories, this book reveals the eight steps of spiritual healing. It puts you in touch with your spirituality and also, a meaningful higher power. This graceful and sensitive guide will show you how to make immediate changes in your life.

2-0 out of 5 stars rather corny, not substantial
This book has good intentions, but they are not carried through in the text. The writing is rather flowery and general and by the end of the authors call *research*, you don't really find out what that research was. I was looking for a book to recommend to cancer patients who want to use self expression as part of their healing, but this was not the book, I ended up returning it.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
This book changed my life. After reading the stories in this book and doing the guided imagery exercises, I was different.I began to have beautiful visions and saw myself surrounded by guides and connected to others. This is my favorite book.I do not have an illness, I have done meditation for years, but this book took me to places in my spirit I have never been.I know it will change your life too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book may indeed save your life
The cover of Patricia Kyritsi Howell's book carries an endorsement from writer Janisse Ray, "This book may save your life."Not only does it harbor a wealth of herbal and botanical and ethnographic information that can help you learn to heal yourself--it also shows glimpses of a way of life brought back into balance, in which the keys to health are not kept in the hands of the few but given freely to anyone with a modicum of knowledge and common sense.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellentreference
I find myself using this book as a reference quite often. It is very user friendly both to the beginer and experienced herbalist. Valuableinformation about the habitat, key actions , traditional and current uses, harvesting tipsand medicinal preperations of the herb are right there I highlyrecommend it .

5-0 out of 5 stars A great handbook for everyone
You don't have to live in the southern USA or be able to harvest plants yourself in order to find this guide indispensable in managing your health and well-being. As an urban dweller, I can find these herbs sold in bulk at whole foods stores, and I also use this book to help me analyze what's included in packaged herbal formulas and teas. The extensive Therapeutic Index lets me easily look up symptoms and locate the specified herbs, and the well-organized plant chapters let me know exactly how to use the herbs once I have them. The Simple Art of Medicine Making chapter early in this book is exactly what I have been needing: at last I am clear about when and how to make an infusion versus a decoction! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely wistful yet basic
I think this book is extremely wistful. It elaborates on the obvious which is that alcohol or drugs are not the problem....it is the feeling that makes one want to use them. The discovery of the issues and then learning some new tools as to how to manage them will erradicate the need for alcohol or drugs. Also, the book discusses how one must be very careful as to how we define ourselves as that can affect our self esteem and future choices (for example saying I am Julie and I am an alcoholic). This book describes a program in which the "user" is not being punished but rather becomes enlightened so that there really can be a cure rather than a "white knuckling" through life on life's terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prentiss is enlightening, and captivating on our nation's growing problem with alcohol and drug addiction.
In his book, The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure: A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery, Chris Prentiss exposes the myth of alcoholism as a life-long addiction. His sparkling new concepts literally blast away what he calls 'the stagnation that has clogged the minds of millions, and prevented people from seeing what was right in front of their eyes all along:that alcoholism and addiction are not diseases, they are not even the problem' Chris Prentiss is cofounder and co-director with his son, Pax, of Passages Malibu Drug Rehab, the world's most successful treatment program for reversing alcoholism and drug dependency. His book has dramatically turned around the lives of hundreds of alcohol-dependent and drug-dependent people. The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure contains the incredible program to total recovery that is the basis of the miraculous success of Passages. For the first time, this book reveals:
5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential book for the whole of Western Society
This book is greatly needed in our Society where addiction is rife, acceptable at low levels and devastating at other levels.Pax's story is incredible and moving and as a person who works closely with addicted people who have found themselves lock behind bars or in a personal prison of addition at home, its a revelation.Lets embrace change, move into a healthy future and help ourselves overcome our slavery to drugs and alcohol. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nurses! This one's for YOU
Here is a book that spells out the future and helps you right now to provide patient education on that tricky topic of herbs.Marthaprovides easy to remember guidelines for patient counselling on herb self-use.She provides information on the use of commonly available and popular herbs that are also generally recognized as safe, using the nursing model.Other herb books use herbalist and/or medical models. And she describes how nurses use herbs and herbal therapies in hospitals. She is a historian and informs us about those nurses who founded the profession and how they used herbs to help patients; Florence Nightengale is revealed as a master herbalist. Her position that many herb applications are and should remain nursing orders and not doctor's orders is thought-provoking, given that such matters are being decided now. But, will these matters be decided withherb-educated nurses or are we to wait passively for our orders?.This book is a unique and indispensable resource and education guide for nurses who know that herbs are not going away any time soon, and whose use in clinical practice will only become more common and integrated into daily clinical practice. How will herbal medicines integrate into nursing practice?Written by a nurse who has actually used herbs in acute care settings here in the USA. This book is FOR nurses. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly enlightening but hard to comprehend at first.
This book will be of tremendous use to you only if you manage to take it as a whole.People don't like that these days, they want instructional books as a collection of easily digested factiods. Alexander's bookmatches the conception of the human self that it describes: it cannot bebroken down into different parts but must be dealt with as a whole.Youcome to understand more and more as you read, but you don't really see whathe's saying until you can consider the whole book in retrospect. So ittakes some work, but in that regard it's a brilliant analog to the ideas itcontains: you must read this book holistically, just as you must deal withyour self holistically.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good source of in-depth information about FM Alexander
F. Matthias Alexander was certainly one of the great creative geniuses ofthis century, although he is still comparatively unknown. In part hisobscurity is due to the novelty of his ideas and in part to his verydifficult writing style. This book is a very lightly edited version of hissecond book and still makes for fairly difficult going. On the other hand, time spent digesting the material in this (and Alexander's other books) iswell worth it.And the book includes an introduction by Professor JohnDewey, a great admirer and supporter of Alexander.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL!!
I had expected this to be just another one of those books that promote spiritual methods for healing - this one focusing on the new wonder "cure-all" melatonin. For some reason I picked it up anyway and couldn't put it down!!This is what I have always been looking for - a reason WHY these methods work, and how they work.Scientifically plausable explanations backed up by research! I highly recommend this book for anyone who really wants to believe that we can heal ourselves and yet feels that it flies in the face of scientific reality. First you're given the information in everyday language and in step-by-step instructions - all that you need is a willingness to try the methods. You're already equipped with all that you need - nothing else to buy and nothing else to invest in - only your time and a willingness to be positive about a change. The second half of the book backs up the techniques with hard scientific data from research at the University of Western in London, Ontario, Canada. If I could recommend only one book on healing - conventionalor alternative - this is it! Best of all - the methods work! Try them, you won't be disappointed and for the first time you'll understand why and how it's working.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good presentation.
The author has made a good presentation on his melatonin research and gives much crdebility to the practice of meditation as a geat healing practice. His research is very convincing, thorough, and scientific. Forthose seriously persuing further study and data on the benefits ofmeditation I strongly recommend reading the Autobiography of a Yogi byParamahansa Yogananda. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book
This is a terrific book.I've read just about all the other popular books on the connections between spirituality and health (by Koenig, Matthews, Dossey, Siegel, Chopra, Benor, and all the rest) and this is by FAR the most level-headed and scientifically grounded. It seems that everyone writing on this topic is either a conservative religious M.D. or some kind of new age follower.Levin is neither. He's a credible, methodologically skilled scientist who actually did much of the original research he summarizes.I've heard him talk--he's excellent--and this book, like his lectures, focuses on the how & why of a spirituality-health connection. He comprehensively outlines all the possible ways that faith may be connected to health--through effects on behavior, social relationships, emotions, beliefs, etc.He even raises the possibility of some things that a lot of scientists might consider unproven (subtle energies, nonlocality, psi, the supernatural), but he is careful and guarded with his tone and, throughout the book, meticulous with his citations. He always considers both sides of the issue and never overstates things.Plus the book is marvelously readable. When was the last time you could say that about an epidemiologist?Very highly recommended to both science types and laypeople. This guy is ready for the big time.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, not too scientific
I was hoping for a more scientific book for researching health and faith. This is OK but goes pretty light on the science. A better book, I think, is called Sprituality, Theology and Psychology (maybe not in that order). It ties the three together nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars God and Science on the Same Page
This is a great book! It pulls together the unbelievably huge amount of scientific research that shows a strong connection between spiritual practices and beliefs and having better health. Levin also shares personal stories of people who have seen changes -- sometimes big changes -- in their lives and health that are linked to prayer and other spiritual practices. One of the most interesting things he finds is that, in terms of health benefits, it really doesn't seem to matter which religious path is followed. The important thing just seems to be that a person connects with God or a religious tradition or a spiritual path of some type. Levin describes health benefits documented in many groups, including Yogis and Buddhists, Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. In general, God seems to be good for us, no matter what we perceive God to be. Why would religion or faith in God be good for health? The book describes all kinds of reasons--from religious people not smoking and drinking to benefits from being in a supportive social group. But the most amazing thing is that these "expected" kinds of explanations for why faith is good for you don't seem to explain the whole picture. Even after these "normal" explanations are taken into account, Levin says that additional benefits of spirituality may come from something beyond what can be measured in scientific studies. That is, the health benefits of connecting to a higher power could have a more "supernatural" explanation. Whatever you believe about the subject, the book makes a powerful case for the importance of spirit in health. ... Read more

"Jamaica Folk Medicine: A Source of Healing" is a very informative book on Jamaica's folk medicine traditions.A variety of styles and practices are explored including Jamaican bush doctors, balm yard healers, kumina, obeah, myal and mother healers."Jamaica Folk Medicine" is an in-depth study by two Ph.D's with input from their students, in short, it is built on solid scholarship. The book highlights Jamaican healing methods but also discusses its connections to other forms of healing in the African diaspora and elsewhere. The only thing readers might have to get past is the dry writing style--once you get past the lackluster presentation, there is much to learn. This is the type of book you will want on your book shelf rather than taking it out of the library--readers interested in this topic, will return to this dense book again and again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely, a must read for anyone even considering medicine
I was assigned this book in an East/West compartive medical class for College, and everybody loved it not just as a literary work but guide to life. Lown shares an ability with Dr. Andrew Weil in that his compassionate and balanced philosophies on life and medicine are backed up and validated by hisscientific knowledge. This book is just as much official text as it is commentary. Most anyone with an interest or passion in medicine or the healing arts would find enrichment from "The Lost Art of Healing."

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping physicians recapture their focus
I bought a copy for myself, and now I am trying to give a copy to everybody I know who is involved in patient care. Most of us went into the medical field with noble aspirations to take care of others and in doing so, to grow ourselves as human beings. The process of going through a medical education debases in many respects our initial aspirations.I read this book and found myself recentered.Dr. Lown approaches medicine as an opportunity to glean from the people for whom he cares. The book is filled with anecdotes gathered from decades of doctoring. The stories lead the reader along the same journey that the author has taken in coming to a sense of himself as a healer. The characters whom have filled his life are interesting and the story of Dr. Lown's personal journey from medical student, to researcher to teacher and master clinician, is fascinating.I highly recommend this book.It has changed the way that I approach my work and given me a zest for opportunities to grow in this profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational work for Aspiring Medical Students
In a profession dominated increasingly by science and technology, it is heartening to hear a courageous voice who spoke forcefully and emphatically against the dehumanization of medicine and for the urgent need to return to the traditional ethos of medicine. This coming no less from a physician of Dr Lown's stature and credentials, a technological wizard who had given the world the first cardioverter and DC defribillator. and yet managed to stay aloof and above the lure of medical scientific and technical sophistry which had captured the awe and fantasy of many of today's medical students and doctors alike. Debunking the myth of the omnipotence of clinical medicine, Dr Lown sought to reconcile the divide between the art and science of medicine, advocating a more humane approach towards the management of patients. He is both a philosopher and a healer, equipped with an open mind and divergent mindset extending beyond the normal confines of medical practice. As a young medical student struggling with the heavy workload imposed by an explosion of medical scientific knowledge, Dr Lown's book is thought-provoking and inspiring, a timely reminder that knowledge and academic grades are merely a means to an end and that human qualities such as empathy, compassion and a sound understanding of the human condition is not only crucial in medical practice, but must be reinforced and developed in the impressionable medical student navigating through rigors and constraints of his studies and training. ...
