Extremely Helpful and Well Organized
I purchased this book for my mother who recently learned she has breast cancer.She loves the book and was immediately able to use it to help her through her surgery and post-operative treatment (i.e., which vitamins to take, etc.).The book does a great job of explaining known risk factors for breast cancer and gives concise information on steps to take to reduce your risk (diet, exercise, herbs, vitamins, spiritual, lifestyle, etc.).I liked the book so much I purchased my own copy and have been recommending it to friends. ... Water-The Shocking Truth
Received the book in just a couple of days and the book was in excellent condition.The information in this book is an eye opener.I could not put the book down. So much information!

Misleading title
The book ought to be called "Flouride, Calcium and Toxic Minerals" or something and not mention water on the front of the book since there are approximately 2-4 pages about water and how it works inside. Water is mentioned repeatedly in conjunction with so-called information about "inorganic minerals" which are blamed, together with but not separately from toxins in our waters, for many health problems; but very little about water on it's own. The Messages in the Water guy, Masaru Emoto, says the most healthy living water has evaporated, precipitated through clean air, filtered through clean earth and percolated back up through mineral rich earth's crust; yet this book claims only distilled water is naturally healthy. My common sense balks at the claim that steam distilled water is 'natural', for a start. This book is more sensational than informative. Not for the serious student of water, IMO. Also reads more like a magazine ad, if that's any consideration.

Don't waste your money
This book is full of information that is one of the following: plain wrong, stretching the truth (sometimes severely), highly controversial, implications of falsities, but occasionally you may happen upon a basic fact that scientists generally agree about. Those that actually want to look into the issue should seek out double-blind scientific studies, not books with advertisements for the author's products. It is a bit odd that there isn't a single formal reference to a single study anywhere in the book since there is such scientific gospel between the covers. A quote from the book that is typical of all the information inside - "The only scientific way to free the necessary quantities of fissionable Uranium 235, buried in the inert mass of its parent U-238, is to force uranium hexaflouride gas through many acres of porous barriers. The next part of the process gradually concentrates the elements, creating a deadly hazard from radiation. 'Hex' is what they named this vicious stuff." The author decides to mix fact and fiction by giving an impressive-sounding fact, and then adding something completely false. She proclaims that chemists call uranium hexaflouride gas "hex" because of the negative implications of the word (from the German hexe meaning witch). It must have slipped the author's mind that the prefix is not "hex", it is "hexa", a Greek word meaning six, ie hexagon, hexadecimal, etc. The word means that there are six atoms of flourine in one molecule of uranium hexaflouride. If the author did not know that (which I'm sure she did) she should not be writing this book. For the icing on the cake, she implies that flourine is inherently radioactive because it can assist making the atomic bomb. She must not have heard of the H-bomb, made with hydrogen, the same hydrogen that makes up 66% of water. I've only mentioned one instance, but anybody buying this book should only do so for a good joke, this book is full of them. People may be impressed people by scientific jargon, but please realize that there is no mandate that even scientists (much less people trying to sell a product or idea) have to be honest. Honest science is a very good thing, but nearly all the time the only message heard comes from those that have the money to put it forth, and that certainly isn't research facilities. Good Advice If Used Properly
Dr. Weil has always given good advice. Alot of it is common sense, which is in short supply nowadays.

I really liked this book, it told a lot about alternative health that openend my eyes. It is amazing how much more options are out there besides the "allopathic" approach.

Don't consult this book!
Not too long ago Mr. Weil appeared on a television show giving healthy eating tips.It was apparent that Mr.Weil was carrying lots of extra weight while the interviewers were trim.Wake up America, this guy is bogus.This book is especially riddled with bad advice.He totally denigrates any weight-lifting (crucial for women to elevate their metabolism and ensure healthy bone mass).He also advocates trimming your protein consumption to a bare minimum.Current wisdom is shifting to the value of good supplies of low-fat protein.Don't buy this book. ... A case of mistaken idenity!
I have not read this book yet, but it is clear to me from reading the reviews by Thomas More "1535" and lilbitz that they both have mistaken this title for Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About by Kevin Trudeau.

AWESOME BOOK OF CURES,NUTRITION, AND HEALING FOODS
Five HEALTHFUL Stars!! In this great compendium Jerry Baker's expert nutrition team, Karen Cicero and Colleen Pierre, shows that many foods can not only taste good and be the source of healthful nutrients, but have healing powers that many of us may not be aware of and can apply in specific cases of need. In an age when we hear so many individual news stories on the benefits of a particular food, it's hard to remember them over time. Now we have one place to look for many common foods available to us all that pack a nutritional punch. It's the last diet you'll ever need.
I do however VERY much enjoy his recipies for food and shakes. They are quite tasty and exceptionally healthy. I can agree with the whole concept of organic foods and excercise for each diet he perscribes. The best thing about the book are Null's exceptional understanding of suplementation. Null goes in depth and reccomends the best supplements combinations I have ever seen. The supplement listings and recipies are the main reasons I purchased this book. I am a mere 20 years old, and like Null says, "Prevention is the best medicine". I highly reccomend this book for college students and middle aged men and women.
Gary's is masterful
The review below is hogwash!!! There is nothing those two books have in common. Gary's is masterful while the other is plop. For many years now I have had spells of insomnia, memory loss, lack of focus and energy. Sometimes, it was hard just to get out of bed each morning. I was in awe while reading this book because I felt like it was really talking to "Me"! I have been following one of the protocols for 2 months now. I already see and feel a tremendous difference in my memory, clarity and focus. I have renewed energy and I no longer suffer from insomnia! Mind Power helped me to understand the biological and chemical reactions which were taking place in my brain and body from all the toxicity in my life. Dr.Gary Null clearly illustrates the true meaning of "cause and effect". I will always continue my work as an artist, but I now feel like I have the tools to prevent any further damage. Why Don't We Learn
This book calls itself the "bible," and is listed under alternative health, but succeeds only in listing "cures" and remedies that have plagued Americans since they first started believing that everything has a cure.Read "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," instead, and begin there before going to the "bible" on herbs and vitamins.

Dated but Authoratative and Relevant
This is an excellent reference, written by a competent and unbiased MD. Though the source material is going on 6 years old in a field of daily change, this is an excellent (and inexpensive) starting point. For what it's worth, all of the material (now updated) with extra entries is now online via a link on the principal author's website [...].
Without the references, this book is useless

great book but getting very outdated
first, this is a great book! a must have for all vegan, veggie, healthfood store luvin travelers. we traveled this country andused this book at least once a day.all in all it was pretty informative and gave a great description of what the store was like and what they sold,andmost of the time the directions were good and simple,sometimes bad and some times wrong. but hey... they give you the phone # so its not a big deal. my only real complaint at all is we need a revised book. I mean "1998" ? Always saves me on the road
I am a traveler.Being a vegetarian on the road can be difficult.The choices are somewhat limited to greasy hamburgers.However, the Tofu Tollbooth really saves me.Elizabeth Zipern and Dar Williams have compiled quite a listing of vegetarian friendly establishments.Sure, most of these places are not interstate-side drive-ins (many listings are of co-ops and natural food stores), but finding a local co-op can be a fun and educational side trip.The places that Zipern and Williams list give the traveler a taste of the local culture as well.The only fault that I can find in this book is that I wish the directions were a bit clearer.Sometimes I find myself following the directions and getting off the highway only to drive many more miles than I had expected.I wish that information such as distence from the highway had been included.But besides that minor drawback, the Tofu Tollbooth is a must for any vegetarian on the road!

The book that helped me wake up
This and Dr. Matsen's first Eating Alive book (see www.eatingalive.com) are two of the most important books I have read in my life. I read the first book in one sitting at the book store, and found it as if lead by an unseen force (I felt guided to go to the bookstore, rode my bike there, and once inside the store, went straight up the escalators, to the natural health bookshelf, and BAM! my eyes hit Eating Alive and I just KNEW I had found exactly what I needed and I bought the book after spending 3 hours in the bookstore reading it from cover to cover and feeling like I had found the secret of the universe). An eye-opener.
The book it is very interesting. Specially for people who are health-oriented. It deals with many different alternative ways of treating conditions and intruduces the average reader to new topics and concepts.One of the sections I liked the most, was the one dealing with mercury fillings (amalgam fillings) and their impact on health. It was impressing to read about all the conditions that can be improved by the solely fact of correclty removing silver fillings. I encourage every one to take action. DO YOU WANT TAKE BACK YOURLIFE?FEEL YOUNG AGAIN!!

You were right, Dr. Lieberman!
I read your book when it first came out. My Mom was using hormone replacement therapy (HRT). I tried to talk her out of it, based on the warnings in your book, but she wanted to follow the advice of her conventional doctor. This was scary, because I know one woman who used HRT and died of uterine cancer-exactly what you said might happen. Now (July, 2002) the newspapers have been filled with vindication of your book's viewpoints on HRT. Boy, has my mother become interested in what you have to say!
