3-0 out of 5 stars Physicians Healing Therapies
The book only mentions all herbs and natural remedies, for that it rates 5 stars but I would have liked a separate section for ailments and dissease referring to the herbs. The section on this in the book I would have liked it to be more extensive It is a good reference book to have.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my new favorites!
I have to say this book has quickly become one of my most used reference books on natural medicine. Dr. Stengler did a truly superb job in consolidating the information in an understandable and practical way.I count his book as a reliable resource for herbal/nutritional/homeopathic information. And, that says a lot because nowadays anybody with some credentials can write up a book, but is it information you can trust?Another thing about this book, that I truly liked was it opened the world of homeopathy to me - the uses of Sepia and Pulsatilla for women!

5-0 out of 5 stars Detox Is More Than A Pill
THE 7-DAY DETOX MIRACLE was written for those who know that a yearly detox is just one step on the road to wellness. Most doctors acknowledge that many illnesses have their origin in the gradual accumulation of junk and gunk in the liver, kidneys, and bloodstream. What authors Peter Bennett and Stephen Barrie have done was to write a text that is somewhere in the middle between a primer for the layman and a more advanced text for serious students of medicine and health. They devote the first seven chapters to a scholarly yet readable theoretical explanation as to what a detox is, what it is not, why we need one, and the various lab tests that allow you to optimize and individualize a detox program. The part of the book I found a needed warmup for the actual process itself was the authors description for a dedication for a week long task that may disrupt one's life style for that week. Essentially, they recommend that one ought to take a series of tests prior to the detox that range from chemistry screen testing to acid/base PH testing and to oxidative stress testing. Since these tests require the intervention of qualified health care professionals, it makes sense not to act precipitously without outside help. Once you know what shape your body is in relative to potential toxic excesses, then the program as outlined in this book not only makes sense but is seen as a necessary treatment either to eliminate these toxins or to make sure that you never get them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with a lot of good information
I am almost finished with the book, and although I have not done the 7-day detox yet, I am very excited about trying it.This book was very informative as well as easy to read and lays out the 7-day plan for you.I also like that they give you suggestions for before, during and after the detoxification.I can't wait to try it!

4-0 out of 5 stars This can be done!
My girlfriend and I both felt the need to do some cleansing and heard about this book through Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About. We started it on a Saturday so we could do the water fast on the weekend - very good idea.I was amazed how I had not problem with hunger and even though I have to watch my blood sugar level there was no problem. We felt so great when we were done. This is something I think we will do at least once a year. ... Editorial Review

For thousands of years, people have relied on the gifts of the earth: nutritious food, clean water, natural light, medicinal herbs--and an active lifestyle to stay healthy. Now the gifts of the earth have been compromised: we eat highly processed food, bathe in and drink polluted water, work by artificial lighting, and take pills when we're sick and depressed from living this way. Natural remedies can make a drastic positive change in your life, says James F. Balch, M.D., in Read more

This book is rather indept concerning just one of the remedies,5-0 out of 5 stars We are all in agreement here!
This book does the job of explaining WHAT our bodies need and WHY theseTen are the most important.Balch has helped us by picking the Ten NaturalRemedies that are the most important ones. That way we can keep our focusa little better.Taking too many supplements throughout the day can get alittle overwhelming. There are also combinations aimed at covering theseareas of need.A site where my family has had great satisfaction in bothservice and product choices/quality is PapaNature.I feel the same wayabout praising them as I do about praising the work of the Balches.Theyalso have additional documentation that exactly parallels Balch's topics inthis great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for every house
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. It is really wonderful, and I have already started taking a few of the supplements the author suggests. I say "a few" because I found that the author couldhave done a much better job expressing/analyzing his ideas (that's why thefour stars). For example, I am under 25, and there are a few things whichleft me in question as to whether I should start using them or not.If youare not sure of something, like me, you should see the book with yourdoctor and then proceed. If the author could expand a little bit more onhis ideas, it would make the perfect book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative and easy to understand
I highly suggest this book to anyone with cancer or if your helping someone with cancer. The information is very practical, easy to follow and lets you know that there is way more you can be doing than just what your doctor tells you. great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A common sense approach for the most part
After having two close family members diagnosed with cancer I became very concerned about the nutritional and environmental links to the disease. When someone you love has kidney cancer and the doctors tell you that they don't know why it happened you have a tendency to panic.I set out to learn everything that I could about cancer and possible causes and/or techniques for prevention.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of this genre..Not full of the usual disproven B.S.
Unlike many other books of this type, this book is well-documented and not full of disproven B.S.There is a more famous author who makes claims that various doctors have found "cures" for cancer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and Useless
A lot of the percursors mentioned in this book, namely androstenedione, are no longer legally available in the U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars I tested prior to takingandro and after!!!!!
The advice given is worth listening to. I did. I am 58 and tested prior to the use of Androstenedione and after, The results were great. I was at the lowest level of testosterone to start and after 6 months of 50mg of Ando per day, It was raised the middle level, Just where I wanted to be. L-Glutamine and Creatine are other supplements to be considered for older men, When used in correct doses and exercise bring good results. I have more studies on my website. Roger Mason, a Scientist has other good books on Amazon check them out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Book on Super T
This is an excellent presentation, aimed at a lay audience, for the role of testosterone replacement and supplementation for male and female health. The author clearly knows the field backwards and forwards, and presents a balance view on each supplement and approach discussed. I also thoroughly agree with his view on weight training, which can be summed up in a question one posed to Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ah-nold's answer: "Am I too old to train with weight?" "You're too old NOT to." Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous!
This book is dangerous!Couple this with Troudeau's scam and you have a society who will substitute the healing powers of herbs for the lab versions of drugs.Allopathic theory of "symptom-Cure" written in the context of alternative health could very well lead to death.Herbs are medicine, the original medicine, and to tout them as miracle "cures" which will invariably cause people, especially Americans, to rush for the "miracle," can be deadly. Noone should be on medicine or medicications for any length of time, and we certainly should be at a more advanced stage by now to recognize that ANY book that suggests miracle cures is written only for profit, not for the knowledge it imparts. Gangi's book, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," was written to combat Troudeau's scam.I believe her book should have superceded this one as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural remedies are recommended
Finally, someonehas come out with information that the average person can understand. I tell my customers to read this book, so they will get reliable information about natural food supplements and herbs. Hopefully this book will be read by Millions of AMERICANS and they can lay their fears to rest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother. Its mostly drivel
Hey. Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews. This isn't really a book about bowel problems. Its about anecdotal, unsupported, stories about some people who might have improved anyway. Get a cookbook. Learn to cook. Don't buy this book. Drivel

5-0 out of 5 stars worked for me
I admit, I did not take all the supplements and did not fully do the hot and cold showers part, but i did stick with the diet and the fasting. The fasting was hard especially the first day but it actually was a great experience, it is almost like a meditation, you are so concerned with hunger that you actually forget everyhting else in life.My skin improved significantly, acne cleared, and the bagginess under my eyese dissapeared.I did loose around 3 lbs in week, which was definitely a big plus. I had more energy but did not start until the middle of the program. I recommend this program and if you cant follow it all the way, at least stick with the diet and the fasting, since that is all I did and i still had great results.

1-0 out of 5 stars Expensive and not worth the effort
If you go on this week long starve your supplements alone are going to run you $100.Then you have to take 5 handfuls of pills every day.I think the author must have stock in the "Twin Lab" corporation because they are the only ones who carry some of the weirder things you have to take. Also, you have to go without food for 48 hours.Doesn't sound hard but if you have a family it is almost impossible. You also have to take cold/boiling showers and do something called "dry skin brushing".I tried it with an open mind and it did nothing for me.The friend who recommended the book tried it with the thought it was going to solve all her problems, and it helped a great deal.So why not skip the complicated starvation and stuff and just believe that you are going to be helped by something simple?

5-0 out of 5 stars Disease wake-up call!
As a naturopathic student I found the book riveting. Not only do theauthors open one's eyes to a whole new way of looking at disease, but theyalso make one aware of how toxic our lives truly are. The book is very wellwritten with a lot of scientific and medical information that also allowsthe reader to understand the way in which our bodies work. I would not sayit is a cure-all for everyone, even the authors don't lay claim to thattitle, but I would recommend this book to anyone who lives in an urbanenvironment and feels the strains of everyday life weighing heavily ontheir health. This book can just save you from that permanent "hungover" feeling every morning. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is scientific medicine?
I recently viewed the new chapter concerning 'naturopathic philosophy' [in the 3rd edition, 2005] within this text at the University of Bridgeport's library, as there's a naturopathic school there that I attended. The chapter discusses the premises of 'the naturopathic.' Do you really want to be treated by a physician who conflates (blends) supernatural, nonscientific, scientifically discarded, idealistic, metaphysical, religious and scientific information -- and presents the whole thing as [supposedly] scientific?[a misrepresentation].Check out "The Epistemic Conflation of a School of Thought Claiming to be Scientific" and "Why I Dropped Out of Naturopathy School" - online per me, Rob Cullen.[THIS is future healthcare? I disagree, these prophets are truly 'facing backward']. I'm highly ethically disturbed by this text and naturopathy, still. I'll just make one point about this book's contention that complexity, self-regulation, and evolution [yes, evolution! with evolution the culmination of 'methodological naturalism,' which is HOW science approaches phenomena, that is: SCIENCE DOES NOT INVOKE THE SUPERNATURAL, it determines its contents based upon EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE, and exceptionally LEAN explanatory approaches {per parsimony:'do not multiply entities needlessly'; that is, if not ascribed by the evidence, IT ISN'T SCIENTIFIC}] indicate that life defies the laws of natural science -- particularly the second law of thermodynamics, per physics, in terms of life as supposedly being antientropic as indicated by life's evolving complexity [p.081-082] -- therefore justifying, particularly, vitalism and its handmaiden teleology-finalism [beliefs essential to 'the naturopathic'; explanations no longer within science at all; rejected-knowledge in terms of the scientific]. Ah, problem. The second law deals with closed systems and life's context is within an open system, in terms of thermodynamics. [For the compliance of the 'living' with thermodynamic law, see Atwater & Rosa's work in 1897 which specifically speaks in terms of the first law {the Kinesiology Dept. of Rice University has a nice web page on biological thermodynamics}; and see 'Biological Thermodynamics' ISBN 0521795494 {p.321 specifically speaks in terms of the second law}]. UB says NDs practice "scientific medicine" and naturopathy is "health science."Hmmm, what kind of [supposed] science text gets something so simple WRONG? Naturopathy is a 'self-labeled science-based' area that won't let go of what has not been considered scientific [the supernatural, the metaphysical, the idealistic, the scientifically-refuted and -discarded -- and kind; i.e., the tenets of their doctrines] for several decades PLUS.This text reflects naturopathic 'epistemic mislabeling nonsense' [e.g. naturopathy's vitalism ("life force"), spiritism ("personal spiritual development; body, mind, spirit"), teleology-finalism ("intelligent, purposeful") and 'whatever else idealism' AREN'T science-based (or even empirical phenomena, as in therefore 'not scienceable'). In reality, minimally, a mandatory, manipulable, spiritual, 'underlying' {metaphysical, supernatural, idealistic and what-not}, 'life force' {of many aliases} immediately responsible for states of health and disease is INSTEAD an ARTICLE OF FAITH {aka 'sectarian medicine'}].Hmmm: "the most thoroughly researched and carefully referenced text on natural medicine has been revised to include the most up-to-date information..." It has been a couple of months since I read that chapter, and I'm still, honestly, LAUGHING OUT LOUD. Naturopathy is, essentially, a 'supernatural science' (an oxymoron; particularly, vital-force-spirit, spiritism, and teleology-finalism as "science-based" are arrived at through a radical unlimiting of the boundaries of 'the scientific'); while evidence from science doesn't support the supernatural, the metaphysical, or the idealistic; and vitalism and spiritism, in terms of physiological agency, are refuted biological hypotheses.-rc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
The third edition of the Textbook of Natural Medicine is an extraordinary accomplishment. This will be seen as the moment when natural medicine truly took its place at the forefront of modern healthcare.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Credibility
Much like the naturopathy school founded by one of the authors, this book LOOKS slick, professional and science based. But, a closer look reveals a lack of any real substance.Far too much emphasis is put on questionable diagnoses.Though the treament sections looks to be well referenced, many of the studies cited don't support the author's assertions and others are outright irrelevant! Many of the disease monographs recommend a shoppingbag full of supplements--Polypharmacy at its worst.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saw this book on CNN...
I saw this book recently on CNN and heard the author talking about it. I bought the book and must say I was not disappointed. This is just a fantastic book. It really delves into areas of natural health that other books on the topic just don't cover. For instance the area of breast health for women or the part about the health of the pelvis. There's just nothing out there that does such a fantastic job covering women's health as this book does. I am getting a tremendous amount out of this book. I give it an A plus, ten stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful , lovely book

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was introduced in a women's magazine
I first read about this book in a women's magazine. Several ailments were described and I tried the one where it was recommended to take Withanolides for Insomnia. I went and got the herb and the product that they talked about at my local Vitamin Shoppe store and that stuff really works!! I have tried several well known herbs who are suppossed to relax you and make you sleep better but this one is really the best. After that I bought the book and it's great. It's an easy read and gives Chinese medicine the attention it deserves. I recommend this book to everyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This was a good collection of home remedies with a lot of good information on herbal supplements. When I bought this book, I was specifically looking for more "home remedies" that our grandparents would have told us about. Such as using simple household items that could be found in anyones house at any given time for many different ailments. My grandma had a cure for just about anything right in her own pantry. That kind of information is not in this book, but all around, an informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars JustWhat I Wanted

5-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...But still glad I bought it...
Very informative...the book is full of good advice and excellent information...but...I think the truth of the matter is...I just need my mom to keep cooking for me...I'm just way too lazy to read about it...then cook it...then eat it...argh!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is for spiritual guidance and NOT for learning facts about nutrition
If you are interested in how food fits in with your life's purpose, then this book might be for you. This book suggests that you should "be mindful more not of the body for the body's sake, but of the body that the temple of the living God may be the better channel for manifesting the spritual truths." Many foods are mentioned regarding their inclusion or exclusion in your diet, but you're expected to take it all on faith since the book does not reference any studies, scientific or otherwise. The book also recommends to avoid microwave ovens for cooking but mentions no reason! Conventional ovens are OK. It also suggests you never eat raw apples. Basically, it's a bunch of advice on how to eat and live without any scientific backing. If you want modern advice backed by science, then try something else like Superfoods RX. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars bunkum and hooey
When I first saw this book at my local pharmacy, my inner skeptic warned me that it would be a load of horse manure. He was wrong, of course; a load of horse manure will fertilize a garden nicely, while Dr. Jarvis' bookis too light to even serve as a doorstop.5-0 out of 5 stars Opened My Eyes!
Once I read this book it opened my eyes to what folk medicine is really about. Just taking what you see in nature and applying it to your health is so simple, yet so perfect. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars ItWorks!
I read this book as an alternative healing book for a course I took.It is easy reading.I tried the QiGong and the healing foods.I only lost two pounds and a pants size.I have regained my sense of balance, my emotions have become more stable and I sleep through the night now without waking up.Those results are more important to me than the weight loss.I am excited about the results and plan to continue.I have plenty more weight to lose, so I will continue what the book suggests. It was the easiest non-diet I have ever done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything that it promised.
I bought my mom & myself a copy of this book and both of us keep it handy for ready reference.I've bought a lot of health books and this is the best that I've ever read.I'm very glad to have it, have told many friends about the book and the website, and expect to read and reread both the website and the book many, many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Health Care Instead Of Disease Care
Doctor Yourself is titled and based on a simple premise: every person is responsible for their own health care. When a person abdicates that responsibility, they often place themselves in the hands of the "disease care" industry, a monolithic and profit-driven enterprise where getting well isn't the bottom line.
