I'm giving this book a high rating because it fills a niche for which no other text exists: An absolute beginner's guide to patch-clamping. Yes, you could read Neher & Sakmann's hefty "Single Channel Recording" but, for the complete novice patch-clamper, it's a bit overwhelming.Read more

plethora of images aptly supplement the text
This is the textbook used in my bioengineering physiology class, and overall, it thus a great job of covering the basics of physiology without going too deep into the details. You get a nice view of the big picture and even get a lot of help understanding the concepts because of all the figures and images that they have included in this book. This would thus be an appropriate textbook if you're teaching yourself physiology as it applies to humans.

good with an adjunct
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysicaland biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommendedto allbiology students.

Excellent reference
This book is an invaluable source of information not only for those studying about various practical techniques but even those engaged in experiments in a lab environment. Written more as an overview, it works to familiarize the reader with the principles of both experimental protocols and the equipment that might be used, for example centrifuges. It's very useful to go back to it from time to time to get a refresher on techniques that I might use on a regular basis but might not remember all the details of. Highly recommended. It's also written quite simply, which unfortunately is not the case for all biology texts.

Fascinating material
I used this book for one of my favorite classes in college on biotechnology.It will show you the cool side of science and all of the neat things you can do with biology and DNA.The level is low enough to where you only need a minimal background to understand it, basic biology classes and preferably genetics.After completing the book you should be excited about the future of biotech, and you will have some understanding about how it works.

Good introductory material for the technical
To those who are interested in the functional aspects of the DNA this is the right introductory stuff. It covers areas including basic molecular biology to commercial methods for manipulating the genes. Pretty useful for someone who's more interested in the technology than the biology!

Good overview but lacks technical rigor
I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department.Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in asomewhat shallow and repetitive way.I have also seen clearer and moreconcise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, andthere is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area.This isnot necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora ofinformation found in the biotechnology field.If someone wants a broadreview of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you wantto focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else. ... Incredible
I am a second year medical student and had the good fortune of using this book last year.In medicine, it is imperative to understand fascial layers and the relationships between different anatomical structures, this book provides that beautifully.This past week, I glanced through a pre-shipment of the neck and internal organ version and to my surprise it was even better than the General Anatomy version!Even though I am finished with Anatomy, I will be buying the new book for my reference.

I have seen so many different anatomy textbooks and atlases that I feel I can speak with authority on this book.
Artistic anatomy
I am a 3d graphics artist working in LA. I've studied the human figure intensely for years. Over the years I've always been on the lookout for any anatomy books with clear illustrations rendered with anatomical skill. I've found a couple of books with photos of cadavers and their musculature but those can be difficult at times to make out distinct muscles and/or groups of muscles. After many years of study and searching, the Thieme Atlas is at the top of my list of anatomy texts. It is the only book I now use for anatomical study of the muscles (except the face of course).

A workhorse
This book is a wonderful review of practical surgical approaches. It has enhanced my ability to visualise the anatomy in three dimensions. The drawings are gorgeous with a very intersting perspective - not just looking from the top or bottom. It is and will be the kind of book that I use not only for studying but for planning procedures. The accompanying text highlights very well the key anatomic landmarks in the dissections. I can wholly recommmed this as a vascular text - especially if you are familiar with operative technique.

Great Textbook for Medical Transcriptionists!
This was the required text for my second subject in Medical Transcription.It was very good and detailed enough for the beginning transcriptionist to understand where everything is, and to familiarize yourself with more medical terminology.This one seems to assume you already have a beginning foundation in basic medical terminology and how to form medical words using word parts, combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes.I say this because the first chapter immediately launches into a LOT of these word parts with very little discussion on what they are, how to do them, etc. The book has a detailed glossary of medical words, though, and it has these little cardboard cutouts that look like miniature index cards (flash cards) that will aid you in memorizing basic word parts.The book has very long and detailed exercises at the end of each chapter that builds on what you have already learned and strengthens your medical terminology foundation.It also comes with a CD-ROM that has exercises relevant to each chapter.WHen you complete a chapter exercise, the software evaluates your performance and tells you where your mistakes are, then prints out a study plan for you where you can bone up and read about your mistakes.An over-all good book! ... CD is self-congratulatory and virtually content-free
While I agree with other reviewers that the text is good and the graphics in the text are outstanding, the CD that accompanies the book is a shocking waste of time.
A Masterful Work
Pinel's Biopsychology is a masterful work. I can only imagine the immense amount of time and effort that has gone into it.I don't think you can find another bookin this field that appeals to such a wide range of readers.I have used this book and previous editions of it as the primary text in the graduate Biopsychology courses I have taught over the past 8 years.This book has consistently earned accolades from mystudents for presenting what is an otherwise complicated and highly technical subject, in agraspable and witty manner.
Excellent book for discerning readers
I have degrees in neurophysiology, molecular biology, and bioorganic chemistry.I really dislike psych texts; in fact, I really dislike psych.What a bunch of fluff BS.This book accomplishes something rare.It effectively frames discussions of psych topics in terms of their hard science antecedents.Pinel makes it seem as though the field of psych actually lives in reality, or at least has a summer home here.Pinel also tells the story, in segments throughout the book, of a traumatic and relevant experience, making the book read more like an engrossing biography than a text.He always relates his personal experinces, but not so much as to distract from the material itself.Extremely well done.One of the only books I had to buy that I actually wanted to keep. ... A must have
The second edition is even better than the first one. It is a must for every ENT, Plastic and OMFS residents. Also would be helpful for surgeons in practice to review.

Great new second edition!
I am an Army Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and just looked through my new second edition.I have used this book for several years now, through residency, and have found it to be very helpful.The new 2nd edition is much better with updated photos and illustrations, new approaches, and great explanations.I have shared this book with my ENT/Head & Neck Surgery and Plastic Surgery colleagues.I recommend this text to residents, fellows and practitioners.

For dent stds who are interested in OMFS & OMFS residents
I previewed this book at my school's library and was recommended to me by an OMFS resident during my externship.After flipping through the pages, the illustrations were precise and the surgical approaches and step are spelled out in detail.It was a great to see specific procedures, steps, and illustrations in this reference text after I've seen it in the OR.I've heard that Dr. Ellis is currently working on the 2nd edition of this text due out in August 2005.Can't wait to get my hands on a copy of that edition!Good luck locating a copy of the current edition, it's out-of-print and no online bookstores have this book in stock. ... A Great reinforcer of previously learned lessons...
I was advised by a homeschooling guide to buy this book for my science classes some time ago. I am pleased to say that I did not regret the decision I made to purchase it, as this is an excellent book! At first, I was surprised that a coloring book would be recommended as an educational tool for a first year high school student, but it was actually very helpful to me. Once I was finished completing it, I was delighted to see how vivid and realistic the illustrations became. So delighted that I bought a copy for my younger siblings to try (aged 7-10). Unfortunately they found it a little too daunting, so I'd have to say that it's not the best book for a ten year old or younger.However, if you're looking for a challenging, educational book for a student aged eleven or up, then you should try this one. Clinical Anatomy and Physiology for Veterinary Technicians

A Very Informative, Interesting Book
I am preparing for my Veterinary Medical Technology Degree. I have many books on veterinary medicine and technology. I ordered Clinical Anatomy & Physiology for Veterinary Technicians because I wanted to better understand the animal body and its systems. This is a very good book for that. It is very easy to read and understand. There are many diagrams that are well layed out and are clear and concise. This is a great book if you are a student or if you just want to learn about the animal body and its many fascinating structures and systems.

This book tells you all about the human body.It has lots of pictures and a model of the whole body.
Great fun with great learning
Since my daughter turned about 3--and now show is 5 and a half--she and I have enjoyed this book time and again each time we visit it. It generally sits in her bookshelf for a month or three, but I've seen come out during several of her playdates. If you use this book casually, every once in a while, your child will definitely learn human anatomy over time. So too, often, will the adult.

A lot of information, but not-so-well explained...
With an undergrad degree in chemistry and a year of graduate school (granted, without a focus solely in biochemistry), this text was often difficult for me to follow and gain much from.Though the text contained an impressive breadth of topics, this breadth came at the cost of depth.In my opinion, a textbook should more-or-less stand on its own in providing a clear understanding of a topic.All too often I didn't find this to be the case with the Fersht book.Instead, I often had to consult many of the references listed in the text to obtain sufficient understanding of topics.(Fortunately, the book includes extensive reference lists.)If looking up endless references (many old and sometimes difficult to obtain) is something you enjoy, this book is for you.--If not, forget it!

A complete and valuable tool
A comprehensive review of this book appears in the March-April 2002 issue of "Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology", Vol. 36, No. 2, p. 141.The book is an important part of a library for anyone engaged in technologies or products dependent on sterilization or disinfection.

How NOT to write a textbook...
At first glance, I was excited to dive into this book, but it looks like the publisher and authors have continued the sins of the previous editions. This text is exceedingly disorganized, fuzzy, incoherent, and even contains some errors. I get the impression that the authors attempted to streamline the material and did so very, very poorly. A much better purchase would be the 3x as thick (concise and enjoyable) Biology by Campbell and Reece.
