excellent desk reference
This book was obviously written by scientists actually working in the field and allows the reader to gain from the writers' actual experiences in development, application and trouble-shooting of various assays. Good bargin Book on A & P
This is a great book for anyone that needs a small (less than 700 pages) book to look up basic concepts. I bought a used copy as a low cost way to start an A&P library. Medical students may not want to use this book unless they are in their very first year and know nothing about anatomy and physiology; but anyone in the allied health field will want to keep this one handy. Anyone who is willing to immerse himself in this book will definitely acquire a good working knowledge of A & P. I found numerous chapters that were great starting points to motivate deeper study. For instance, the Chapter on Muscles is very useful. It provide views of each major muscle, along with a diagram that lists what type of motion the muscle creates, and it's origin & insertion points. Many chapters have clinical examples as well as special sections that deal with aging and it's effects on the body's systems. If you are on a tight budget, get a used copy and you won't be disappointed.

Sperm Wars-A great theory
Although the author has a vast knowledge of animal husbandry, I believe he makes some leaps across the boundaries of genus and species to prove his theories with that knowledge. Overall the book was great on many levels.It gives us a good insight to the behavioral imprinting of sexual habits that most people do in fact make.I am in agreement with the author on a lot of his assumptions, but the hard facts are not presented in this book, at least not for human subjects. I'm glad I bought it because it gives us a lot to think about in the realm of human sexuality.
Fun stuff from the strange laboratory of nature....
Who would've thought that mastrubation, oral sex, rape, S & M and homosexuality have reproductive advantages?Or that every human sexual behavior and perversion has an equivalent in birds or monkeys?
Seduction, Stimulation, Social interaction, and Deception.

All the information you need
Lots and lots of illustrations, so it has all the stuff you need. Not easily accessible/not easy to navigate.

Good but not excellent
This is re: 10th edition.
Underrated, but truly delivers. That's what we found.
This is the review I posted regarding the Netter atlas. I cite here, because it compared the Netter atlas with Grant's. It reflects the view of somebody that really experimented on the dissecting table various atlases. In the end, our group ended up with Grant's. It really delivered for us. My review assumes you will have a thorough anatomy exam, including cadaver, x-rays, CT, and physical examination of the live human. It might be that you school will only require a written examination, in which case our experience might not be the same. However, I feel this atlas develops fundamental skills.

Good for nurses or for any interested layperson
This book gives you a good introduction to pathophysiology without being very technical. Even if you are not a medical professional, you will still grasp the concepts because the author gives simple but adequate definition of the disease and its underlying causes. I am a career switcher (switched to RN) and this book worked for me.

Fields Virology
The book pictured on this site is the Fourth Edition of Fields Virology.However, the "Book Description" in the "Editiorial Reviews" section on this site is for the Third Edition of Fields Virology.I hesitate to purchase the book because I am unsure which edition you will be shipping.Before I place my order, I want assurance that I will be receiving the Fourth Edition.

Best out there for MAMMALIAN virology
My take on this two-volume set is that if you are going to put out as much money as this set costs, you should get a lot for it.This two- volume set is simply the best I have found for MAMMALIAN virology, with a close second being 'Fundamental Virology'.I stress the mammalian virology, as it omits a good bit (if not all) of the plant- associated virii.The basics of all virus structure are in there, regarding plant virii, but beyond that, there is information lacking.Despite this, when purchased as a graduate-level or upper-undergraduate level text or reference guide, there simply is no other text of this scale.There is a lot more text than graphics, but this does not (in my opinion) deter from the value of the text.If I could, I'd give a 4.5 star of 5, only for the lack of plant virii information and my personal desire for more graphics.i will say that the CD-Rom has more than enough graphics to make up for the book's seeming lack of graphics.As a 'financially- burdened' Pathology trainee and Virologist by employment, I will say that this is worth the price and effort to read.Note that it is written to the biologist who has some knowledge, albeit foundational knowledge, of biology.

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.Read more

These people all lie
Don't misjudge my review; I'm not just some lazy kid who hates all work.I'm in the honors program at UCI studying to be a doctor.And this book isn't very good.The reading, I will grant, isn't too bad.Most of the time it's easy to follow, and sometimes it's confusing.However, the problem comes when you try to put it all to the test and do the problems at the end of the chapter.Not only does the book present problems that were not covered in the reading, but it doesn't explain the answers, either.It just gives them to you.I am forced to constantly ask a friend of mine if he knows how to get the answer they give, because the book gives no indication of how to arrive at it.It also withholds information; in one problem in chapter 5 the answer they give is only possible, ONLY possible, if chymotrypsin cleaves a protein at isoleucine (the book only gives leucine, not iso-).In the next problem, it is virtually the same thing, taking cleavage information and trying to put amino acids in the correct order.However, in this one, their answer insists that you NOT cleave at isoleucine.Otherwise you'd be wrong and wonder what you did.Of course, you'd get no explanation.If you have to get this book for a class, then fine.Good luck with the homework if you have to turn in the problems.But if you're getting it to further challenge yourself of your own accord, search around for some type of solutions manual first, because this book won't tell you how to get anything.It assumes you have a lot of background knowledge already, so I don't know where one reviewer got the notion that this is great for beginners...if you want a good book for beginners, seek out the Garrett & Grisham book.It simplifies biochemistry beyond belief compared to this book.

Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!

The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read.If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper�s Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines.i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed).the book just keeps getting better.the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter.as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem.it makes it seem easy and fun to read.you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash. ... We forget that we're animals....
Amazing piece of work. Very slow reading... meaty. Well written. This should be the primer for every field of study in every country. We are first and foremost biological organisms. We live in language like fish in a fish bowl. Fish can't distinguish water. It defines them. Same with language with human beings... we are defined by our listening and speaking and don't have a clue.
Another Look at Knowledge.
Excellent and superb are words that come to mind while reviewing this work. The authors, Drs. Humberto R. Maturana (biologist, University of Chile) and Francisco J. Varela (Foundation de France Professor of Cognitive Sciences and Epistemology, Paris) attempted and succeeded in providing a clear and concise work in a difficult field. Their goal was to "propose a way of seeing cognition not as a representation of the world 'out there,' but rather as an ongoing bringing forth of a world through the process of living itself."

Pictures are pretty bad
I am a medical student and I want to dis-recommend this book, especially to medical students.What makes a biology textbook good in my opinion is above all the quality of the pictures.And since the pictures in this book are poorly designed and poorly laid out, I can only dis-recommend it.

Gray's Anatomy for Students
This is very good book with nice pictures, clear anatomical views.

Gray's a good choice for med students
I'm a third year med student in Taiwan, and i found Gray's anatomy a major help to my studies. The illustrations are very concise yet very informative. The text is user-friendly and the arrangement of topics allows quick detailed revision. Although there are few minor mistakes in the diagrams and text, the book surpassed all other anatomy books in its approach to anatomy.

I'm a first year medical student who just finished three grueling months of gross anatomy. The required textbook for the course was Moore's Clincally Oriented Anatomy, but when I looked at it for the first time I just knew that myself and that book WERE NOT going to get along. The paragraphs seemed convuluted, and it went to far too much detail.

great book, better understand your research and stats!!!
I bought this book on a recommendation to study for the physical therapy OCS exam.So far, this book is very clinically relevant.Great pics and descriptions, but I don't understand all of the statisics and research.There is a chapter on the statistics, but I was still uncertain of interpretations, so I had to do further reading in research texts and web pages to help me understand.If you have a stong research background, then you'd love this book.If not, you may find it slightly frustrating to understand all the areas of the book.Also, remember this is based mostly on Examination and not much on treatment.This would probably be a great book for students in a PT program that is based on evidence based practice. ...
