A Good Read, but Read it Carefully!
The authors provide a really nice, non-technical survey of the landscape for Cox Proportional Hazards models. A nice aspect of their treatment is the care they take to reference all highly technical texts and journal articles. For example, if you'd like to find out more about goodness-of-fit tests for survival models, the authors provide ample references to the Counting Process Theory of Martingale Residuals.
nice introduction
This book provides a good, clear, concise explanation of Cox's proportional hazards models. For someone seeking a non-mathematical description this is a great guide. The original datasets from the text examples can even be downloaded and you can go through the same process yourself. Because of some mistakes in the text, I would recomend looking at other sources as well.

Great conceptual Introduction to Cox regression analysis
I enjoyed the authors' book on logistic regression analysis in 1989, and this book is just as good, or better, with many extremely practical suggestions on building regression models for survival data.Happily, theauthors summarize, compare, and contrast several major texts on survivalanalysis which have appeared in the past 10 years.For example, theydiscuss different names used by different authors for score residuals. They present a helpful appendix on the counting process approach tosurvival analysis, which will make more advanced texts accessible tostudents;thus, anyone who wants to use survival analysis, at any level,should consult this book, even if he has already studied books by Miller,Lee, Collett, Fleming-Harington,Andersen, et al, etc.An unfortunatedrawback to this book is that the first printing contains many carelesserrors, some of which may affect student learning:for example, thedefinition of a survival function is misstated.I recommend that youinsist on the second or third printing when buying this book, and you willbe quite satisfied. ... Very Disappointed
I was particularly interested in one of the two enclosed disks - 1 CD - same title as the book, and 1 DVD - Primal 3D Anatomy. The disks are highlighted on the cover, and described in intriguing detail on the back cover. BUT WAIT - inside the front cover, the last paragraph on another "highlight" it says "The second CD contains a 45-day free trial". The same note appeared on the disk but it was covered by the Notice to consumer. My conclusion was this misleading presentation WAS INTENTIONAL! Can't return it now because the disk seals are broken. The management at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins should be sent up the river in chains.

Can't beat Moore's Anatomy
Ok, I am just starting medical school.So far I am 120 pages into this book.I like it very much - it is very readable book and has made many concepts clear to me.Some q-banks reference this book (Appleton & Lange Anatomy for one).One very successful USMLE tester(268/99)credits reading the blue boxes in Moore before the exam with being the most high yield Anatomy study for the Step 1 exam. Beating HY Anatomy and BRS Anatomy.I have both HY Anatomy and BRS Anatomy - however, reading this book gives the more exam important concepts and mechanisms the USMLE Step 1 test is changing towards.

Surprisingly disappointing
Although the text did have many strong points such as clinical discussions as well as good anatomical descriptions, my anatomy class and I discovered many mistakes and misprints, especially within the charts and tables, which occured throughout the text, often conflicting with other texts as well as just being incorrect altogether.I would recommend another text for studying accurate descriptions and details concerning musculature, such as their origin and insertion as well as innervation and action. ... Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. Lippincott Biochemistry Checkerboard Review Book
The book gives a very clear and concise review of many topics while still hitting on the main points.There are many good diagrams and tables, and the questions at the end of each chapter are very good.

The best for the boards!
Unfortunately, I did not discover this text until it came time to study for USMLE step 1.Most in my medical school class read the Lippincott Illustrated Review Book as a primary text.In medical school I read the entire biochem textbook (stryer).This BRS book is awesome.It is in outline format and has all of the information you could be tested on.I made it through it in just a few days when studying for step 1.This is a much quicker read than the other Lippincott book. I highly recommend it. Worked very well in combination with First Aid for Step 1.Would also be helpful to use as an additional resource during class.

What I liked about this book was the details regarding metabolic pathways and how she puts them all together, much better then high yield, I also used her book for my bio chem course as well, Lipincotts has great diagramms, but this book for me was even more helpful ... Read more

For a medical student, not a bad book.
One's opinion on this book depends your purpose.This is not a comprehensive histology text, nor is it an atlas of histology.Graduate students in anatomy or histology will be disappointed.
The Best BASIC Histology book
For sure this is the best BASIC Histology book ever...if you do want some deep treatment about the topic, go search another book...but for what it intends to discuss (the basic concepts of human body tissues science), the book is explendid. Please, DO NOT compare this book with a non basic book.

Some pros and cons
fThis book is probably fine as an introductory text, but I was looking for something a little more rigorous. Also, the plates weren't as nice as other histology books I'd seen, which someone else here mentioned also. I don't know if that was just my copy of the book or a problem with all of them.

What a steal!
Knees bees. Whatever. Just got this book a week ago, so as far as helping knees per se, don't know, but most impressed with it. These few yoga exercises limbers up the entire hip, leg area. It identifies which side is tighter. She even rightly points out to go barefoot often to strengthen feet that have been too conditioned to shoes.

Ordering for second time
I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

For MS-1s
This book is adequate.I cannot give it a much more glowing review than that.I must agree with some of the other reviewers in that it lacks good figures.The text is ok.I would definitely discourage anyone from buying this as a reference text.

The book is a mish mosh
It's too bad this book is a mish mosh and that neophytes in Chinese medicine are not going to know this. Some of the material is very standard and authentic, but a lot of it is the authors' own invention. So be careful with this. If you want the real deal, this is not the book you want. A better introduction to standard Chinese medicine is Kaptchuk's classic, The Web That Has No Weaver.

Excellent Guide to the Novice
I am a novice in the art of TCM and I do not speak or read chinese. This was an excellent guide for me in my studies in preparation to attend school for TCM and also how to get some practical benefit from my Chinese herbs. This was an Excellent Guide for the Novice.

An excellent introduction to the tenets of TCM
I recommend this book to all of my clients! With so much focus being placed on alternative therapies in health care, it staggers me that so much of the general public still thinks that acupuncture is for idiots acting as a human pincushion. While it is far from an instruction manual (which was never its intent), Between Heaven and Earth gives laypeople a simplified and elegant explanation of an ancient science. If you're looking for a definitive education in TCM, go to a university and get a degree. If you want an introduction to wellness through Chinese Medicine, read this book. ... Read more

GREAT Introductory book
Forget what A reader from ROY, WA USA said. Worthless!
I feel ILL when I think of how much I spent on this and how UN-helpful it was.I am a massage student that was kind of panicked about being back in college and intimidated by the amount of information I was being deluged with.I bought this book thinking to review and drill myself on all the possible questions that could come up in tests...et cetera.This book has smatterings of questions you could be asked...samples more than anything.This would be fine it it were not for the excessive cost of the book!What HAS helped me with studying is the Review for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Certification (ISBN 0-7817-3454-1) by Joseph Ashton & Duke Cassel.For instance, we just finished learning about the Endocrine System which was extermely confusing to me...both the lecture and the material in the text book.When studying for the test, I didn't know WHERE to begin!But I reviewed and memorized the three page secion in the Ashton/Cassel book and I got an almost PERFECT score!Only one question wrong out of 50!

Clear, cheap, great question/answer section.
One of the advantage of a book like this is that it does not overwhelm a beginner. It's concise, useful, with decent colorless illustrations. Great if your goal is just to get your toes wet in the facinating ways our body works. I used it in conjunction with my class textbook.

Anatomy made easy
I think this book is great. The text is very up-to-date and comprehensive. The CD that comes with the book really helps cement the major concepts of the text in your mind. If you are a visual learner, this book is for you.
