The fundamental authority
It is common practice at most universities to prescribe Biochemistry by Voet & Voet. The book is a classic which covers most relevant topics in Biochemistry from a more chemical perspetive (kudos for that!). For students doing a one off unit in biochemistry, this book will be far too dense and therefore, impractical. The target audience of this book are serious undergraduate biochemistry students who are familiar with first year chemistry and more importantly first year organic chemistry.
great book, grossly overpriced
Voet and Voet is an excellent introductory biochemistry textbook.The focus leans more towards the chemical aspects as opposed to the biological, which allows it to fill an important gap among undergraduate texts.The scope is broad and comprehensive, with clear writing and informative illustrations.While the book is a valuable resource, the price is truly outrageous.For those adopting textbooks for classes, I recommend assessing whether the added chemical rigor is worth the added price for students.Serious and motivated students of biochemistry will likely appreciate and benefit most from this book.Check out the contents (e.g. at a library or college bookstore), and make sure they meet your needs, before taking the considerable financial plunge in buying this book though.

Pluses and publisher minus
As a reference for those of us that are out here doing research in the real world this is a Godsend. It may not be appropriate for an introductory text but for those of us needing a concise backup for real decisions it is wonderful.

Great Biochem book
I had this textbook for Biochem 1 and 2 and I thought it was excellent. It went in-depth when it was needed.The authors choose to leave out some reactions (using multiple arrows) and I thought that was great because it wasn't really needed in most cases.Sometimes there were questions though on how to get to one structure from the last.Pictures were great and really helped to picture what was going on.

I really like this book.It does a great job of explaining the topics in detail, yet not too esoteric that one without a background in either biology or chemistry won't be able to understand.I have neither and I feel I am progressing along well.

good!
This was a very good book for coursework, especially since the syllabus from BOD wasn't that good. For the boards, I just skimmed this book, particularly paying attention to the end of chapter summaries...I read through first aid biochem, and any topic I felt was hard to grasp i would re-read it in lippincotts. recommend this for boards when studying pathways... rememeber only study and read about pathways that are represented in first aid...and pay attention to rate limiting reactions!!!

LWW Illustrated Biochem
An excellent book for coursework in both undergrad and first year medschool, plus the tie-in with LWW Illus. Pharm. is a great duet.Our first year biochem was horribly taught, this book helped immensely, and look forward to using it for quick reference review in year 2 and Board study.

GREAT review
I am now a believer.I was skeptical about purchasing the review series, but I used it to study for comps, and I was amazed at how easy I was able to get through the material.The summaries are exceptional and as a biochemist, it served as wonderful starting point, pointing out critical processes- and giving a "big picture" framework-- which made learning the details far easier.I highly recommend the text. ... Why your reviews are important...
I am a biochemistry professor.After years of using another text I decided to try the Voet & Voet text.I was very excited about their latest edition and couldn't wait to teach with it. Unfortunately it was a disaster.There are far too many trees in Voet & Voet, and students couldn't see the forest this year.So I am looking at "Principles of Biochemistry" 4th edition by Horton et al.
Fine book, for whatever it matters
The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about the principles of biochemistry, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

save your money for Physical Organic Chemistry - by Dougherty & Anslyn
This book is written at the undergraduate level.The figures are a joke.It's a paperback and will fall apart.If you are in graduate school; buy the text by Anslyn & Dougherty instead.It is a nice hard bound book, durable & weighs a ton. Its worth the money and the weight in your backpack.

Horrible
It is now more than a month after I was supposed to receive this book and I have not gotten it yet, what the hell is going on.

Update of a Classic
This is an update on a classic text that has been used by many graduate and advanced undergraduate students. Great Bio-Chem Book
This book is very detailed and covers a wide range of bio-chemistry information.

Well-written, not-so-hot layout
My university uses this book for the two-semester biochem sequence for BSc Chemistry/Biochemistry students.It's a well-written book, overall -- lots of information but not a very dense "scientific" read.The best part is the way the authors keep tying things back to reality ... sidebars explain how the dynamics of protein folding affect Alzheimer's disease, or what protease inhibition means for the development of HIV drugs.

Good reference for non-chemists
As a physics graduate student interested in biophysics research, I found this text an invaluable resource. I had intro chemistry as an undergrad and AP bio in high school, but no organic chemistry or any other background. This text contained a clear introduction to biochemistry and described a lot of the techniques I was reading about in scientific papers in language that a non-chemist could understand. I still refer back to it frequently.

Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry is simply the best one.
The Lehninger Princicples of Biochemistry is the best book in biochemistry that has been written. I have use it in my biochemistry course in my first year in school medicine and thanks to this book I pass my class with one of the best notes in the group. Any other book exposes the biochemistry principles with clarity and coherence like the Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry. I can�t wait for the 4th edition.

Good book for biochemistry
This book is complete and thorough in explaing every energy pathway (Kreb's cycle, electron transport system, glycolysis, etc.)The diagrams are helpful and explain the material with visual detail especially in this type of book.The only thing, the book is somewhat hard to understand for reading it the first time.I know biochemistry is a hard subject, but I thought it could be explained in a little easier fashion.However, other than that, the book is quite organized and a must buy for every chiropractic student taking biochemistry.I also highly recommend:Read more

Outstanding...
This is probably the best book of its kind in the vast and multidisciplinary field of drug design and action. Richard Silverman is an acclaimed chemistry Professor at Northwestern University, and in this book, he provides the most comprehensive and lucid exposition of the chemical basis of drug action that I have seen. No matter how complicated biological systems and their interactions are, at the basic level, it's all chemistry, and mostly organic chemistry. An organic chemist will find this book extremely illuminating in a way that would not have been made clear through his traditional education.
Excellent
This is an excellent book and it lies on the smaller physical side of organic chemistry, as the title says, instead of the huge biochemical side.It really was a fascinating book.

Useful and worth buying, butwith one major drawback
The content of this book is adequate and it is written in an easy-to-read, flowing style. It could use some more tables for comparison of immuno. panels to help in differential diagnoses, but over-all it is a decent and very helpful everyday reference.The index, however, has much to be desired.Many immunoperoxidase stains are not listed individually in a catalog style, nor are the specific cells/organs/organ structures that they stain, so unless you already know what entity a specific stain is used for or know alternate diagnoses or names, you may not be able to find it.You can't just look up a specific stain you may have heard about and want to research further.The index is a critical component of a well-written book and is just as important as text it represents--it's no use having a book full of information if you can't find what you need.I hope this issue is addressed in the next edition, in which case then, this book may reach the status of excellent.

Must Have Textbook
This reference is a must have! If you are a surgical pathologist and do not have this textbook you are setting yourself up to fail. It is extremely well written and with all the color photos it is a great value for the money. I probably use this text more than any other reference textbook. The insight gleened from reading this text has saved me on a number of challenging cases. The tables are excellent and easy to read. I can't wait for the next edition. ... Read more

Excellent.A MUST for anyone in biochemistry and endocrine
This is by far the best written and illustrated book for pathways I have ever seen.If I was teaching a course, it would be absolutely required.

"Bichemical Pathways"...Great content, Poor Presentation
Comprehensive references of bochemical pathways are not common, especially with well described cofactors, modulators, and interactions with disparate pathways.This book could provide such a useful reference, unfortunately,the quality of the layout is so poor as to make it very difficult to read. Poor graphic quality, exceptionally small fonts, and poor color choicesrender what should be a most useful reference into a visually challengingdocument.At the price, the book is a disappointment, although the contentis great. Onewishes that the editors would rerelease it after completelyrevising the graphics and production quality, as the content is indeed veryuseful.

A struggling beginner
This book is a great needed idea. If you are using the accompanying text in your class this is a must have. BUT the authors decided in their wisdom to put questions in each section that are for discussion (3-4 pages for each chapter).Great right? They don't have any answers for the discussion questions! The given reason is that it will make you, the student, a better biochemist. Should you find study groups a waste of time (I do), then you read the text several times trying to find the right answer and are uncertain if you ever found it.

BURTON ROSE AGAIN IS EXCELLENT
FOR RESIDENT AND FELLOWS AS STAFF TOO, THE FIFTH EDITION OF BURTON ROSE IS EXCELLENT, COVERING BASIC CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ALL THE RECENT RESEARCH MEDICAL NEWS IN FHE FIELDOF FLUID AND ACID BASE PHYSIOLOGY.IT SHOULD BE RECOMENDED FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDICAL LIBRARY.

Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read
No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists.However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

The best in its field
I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. I recommend it for all physicians especially those working in emergency room, intensive and cardiac care units. In fact it is very helpful for all doctors working in the different clinical fields. excellent desk reference
This book was obviously written by scientists actually working in the field and allows the reader to gain from the writers' actual experiences in development, application and trouble-shooting of various assays. This book will serve as an excellent teaching tool for lab managers to train their staff in the complexity of developing, optimizing and using immunoassays.

These people all lie
Don't misjudge my review; I'm not just some lazy kid who hates all work.I'm in the honors program at UCI studying to be a doctor.And this book isn't very good.The reading, I will grant, isn't too bad.Most of the time it's easy to follow, and sometimes it's confusing.However, the problem comes when you try to put it all to the test and do the problems at the end of the chapter.Not only does the book present problems that were not covered in the reading, but it doesn't explain the answers, either.It just gives them to you.I am forced to constantly ask a friend of mine if he knows how to get the answer they give, because the book gives no indication of how to arrive at it.It also withholds information; in one problem in chapter 5 the answer they give is only possible, ONLY possible, if chymotrypsin cleaves a protein at isoleucine (the book only gives leucine, not iso-).In the next problem, it is virtually the same thing, taking cleavage information and trying to put amino acids in the correct order.However, in this one, their answer insists that you NOT cleave at isoleucine.Otherwise you'd be wrong and wonder what you did.Of course, you'd get no explanation.If you have to get this book for a class, then fine.Good luck with the homework if you have to turn in the problems.But if you're getting it to further challenge yourself of your own accord, search around for some type of solutions manual first, because this book won't tell you how to get anything.It assumes you have a lot of background knowledge already, so I don't know where one reviewer got the notion that this is great for beginners...if you want a good book for beginners, seek out the Garrett & Grisham book.It simplifies biochemistry beyond belief compared to this book.

Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!
Mathew�s Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read.If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper�s Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

great book!
I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines.i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed).the book just keeps getting better.the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter.as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem.it makes it seem easy and fun to read.you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash. ... Irrelevant to the real GRE Biochem test
I do not recomment this book, after I glanced through it I never touched it again; it will neither help you learn something, nor give you any idea what the real test is. Buy ETS book to get the idea of what kind of questions occur on the test, and prepare for the test using several big textbooks on these three subjects as well as your lecture notes.

This book contains a ton of useless information that will not help you at all in studying for the subject test.
