Makes a difficult topic very approachable
This is a very well produced book wilth many illustrations which make histology, a topic I've taught but never mastered, make more sense.While the book is very approachable, it is still very much in-depth and if you are looking for a more introductory text, you may want to consider getting an atlas to begin.However, medical and graduate students would do very well with this text since it bridges the molecular mechanisms active in cells to the microscopic structure of tissues and organs.It also brings the microscopic structure and function into view regarding the gross anatomical perspective as well, giving a top-to-bottom appraisal of histology.This would have been a five-star rating if only the pages were not so whispy that my highlighter bled through to the other side of the page repeatedly.Students, buy this book with confidence, but underline rather than highlight!

This is the best histology book I have seen. Good for molecular biology researchers as well-better then many standard textbooks. Very good discussions of development of cell types as well as structural histology.

I really like histology and this book
The photos are very good in this book. If you are taking histology I do recommend this one.This is a complete text.Each subject area is expertly done (example)muscle tissue, bone, skin etc.

For a medical student, not a bad book.
One's opinion on this book depends your purpose.This is not a comprehensive histology text, nor is it an atlas of histology.Graduate students in anatomy or histology will be disappointed.
The Best BASIC Histology book
For sure this is the best BASIC Histology book ever...if you do want some deep treatment about the topic, go search another book...but for what it intends to discuss (the basic concepts of human body tissues science), the book is explendid. Please, DO NOT compare this book with a non basic book.

Some pros and cons
fThis book is probably fine as an introductory text, but I was looking for something a little more rigorous. Also, the plates weren't as nice as other histology books I'd seen, which someone else here mentioned also. I don't know if that was just my copy of the book or a problem with all of them.

Indispensable book for pathologists and path students

What is a Pathology intern?

If you are a pathology intern or resident, this book was written just for you.How many of us graduate from medical school and remember basic histology?My guess would be few to none.The book is organized into sections based on organ systems and further subdivided into chapters on specific organs within those systems.It provides a "refresher" about the embryology and gross appearance of a particular organ before launching into the histology, and most people could probably use the review.The color pictures are excellent, and, in my opinion, a MUST for any book detailing histology; black and white photos just don't help me very much at this early stage in my career because they don't convey the details the way color photos do.Read more

A text and an atlas...good at neither
This text tries to be both a text and an atlas in one and is unfortunately good at neither one.The text is very very basic and lacking in detail.The sections are poorly stained, out of focus and do not clearly demonstrate the structures.The pictures are small and of poor quality.Considering the price, I would recommend spending the extra 30-40 bucks and buy Gartner and Hiatt for an atlas and Junquera for a text instead of paying for this text.

Good holistic look at hESCs
Kiessling & Anderson have packed the 200-page book with concise information about the history, therapeutic potential, & technical challenges of HESCs science in a coherent manner. Most specially, the holistic look of hESCs enables readers to gain better & objective understanding of the social debate about the field. Among various parts of the book, I find the last part 'hESCs & Society' to be the most provocative section; the other 'science' sections were also higly engaging, especially with the clear illustrations, photos, & sidebar stories. Let's hope that hESCs' potential can be fully unleashed to treat various patient populations in the world.

Stem Cells - A brilliant and timely book!
A great book! Given the intensity of the discussions in our current culture, cy2005, this book provides the biology, both at a sufficient introductory level for a layman like myself, as well as for the advanced scientest, to appreciate the whats and whys of the subject. The authors carefully and, without emotion or bias, also present some of the issues being debated, and illuminate options for technical progress for society without trampeling on people's beliefs and feelings.

Well presented but biased...
I found this book to be relatively well written supplemented with clear figures. That being said, I found the book quite biased towards hESC research. Any introduction towards a subject, especially directed to the lay reader should be a little more objective than this book is.I understand that the book is about hESCs, but adult stem cells are given a cursory brush aside as if they were not an alternative at all.I particularly found offensive the following statement, "Scientific ignorance is the driving engine of the antiembryonic stem cell movement."On the contrary, moral indifference, the almighty dollar and scientific ignorance are all driving the proembryonic movement.I also happen to have an advanced degree in bioengineering and am against hESC research.The book neglects to mention that clinical trials with hESCs are far, far away. Instead, as do most books of this type, it paints a picture that cures with hESC's are just around the corner when this is simply not the case. Pros and Cons...
I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this.There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.

A great book
This book was suggested to me by my University as part of the Histology curriculum of the General Med. program. It took me quite a while to understand that this is probably the best histology book there is, and I have 3 other books to prove it..
Good Text, Needs more diagrams
This is a good histology text to read and understand. It has not only structural descriptions, but has related physiology and this makes the book interesting to read. With mastering histology in the first year of the medical school, pathology would be easy to learn in the future. This book makes histology a more interesting subject. good

Great resource!! but slight lack in essentially details.
This is the book of books for histologists... a virtual bible for the histotechnologist.The book covers everything from laboratory management, fixation (theoretical and practical aspects), sectioning, staining, and an overall and detailed view of histology and immunohistochemistry.However, I found some sections to be more as summaries rather than desciptions.By that I mean, for instance the microtomy section (which deals with problems and solutions to those problems while sectioning) lacks the details needed to correctly resolve a situation unless you are already a trained histologist.I would recommend maybe adding more information with diagrams of the microtome, blade angles and the difference changing such angles would make (something that would be found in a BOR study guide or more like the microscopy section - Chapter 4 that perfectly diagrams and depicts all aspects of microscopy very well).Also, the recipes for some stains... unless someone was a trained histologist, some the solutions may be difficult to make up from the way they are worded (i.e. amyloid (Congo Red) solution saturated in 80% alcohol ... back of book tells what saturation point for Congo Red is in water but not alcohol... simple explanation within recipe itself would help making up such stains easier, I believe.

Ackerman could use an editor
While Ackerman has arguably the best scheme for inflammatory skin diseases - his writing is so superfluous and filled with interupting phrases that one might wonder whether or not English is his first language. It is extremely conversational, and not in a good way. So if you have difficulty reading wordy books, or are easily distracted - you might think twice before forking over the cash on this book. Also, his first version is probably better without as much reliance on links to his website. However, you still probably cannot go wrong by studying even this version of the great Ackerman's approach to inflammatory skin disease.

unconventional but great
This book on pathology of inflammatory skin diseases is quite different than anything else in the field. Ackerman presents his own opinions boldly and interestingly. Have I had a book like this during my residency, I would have probably gotten more involved in this subject. At that time the book to read was Lever: the result was profound sleepiness and inability to finish a chapter. Here it is all different: each small chapter is thought provoking and original. Finally skin pathology became interesting!

Must buy, outstanding textbook
This book is simply excellent.It has great pictures and it helped my with my histology class in med school.It is easy to read and it makes histology a lot more interesting and fun to learn.It also cut some of my study time since it is not filled with unnecessay information---it gets right to the point.My study group and I also used the following that is also on amazon: This has the potential to be a fine book....

A very good review book for a medical student
I found the book nicely edited, the illustrations were priceless and contained lots of information. The theoretical content of the book though cannot be compared with Ross, this is why it can be used only as a review book. The main quality of the book is in its illustrations and images, which are truly excellent.

Great atlas for histology
I found this book to be a great resource for my medical histology class.The pictures helped me to remember key concepts for on my histology lab.The difference between squamous and transitional epithelium can really only be appreciated with the help of this atlas since it is harder to describe it in words.If you really want to know the type of medical histology questions asked on histology medical exams, get the following which is on amazon: Excellent source for medical students
