Microbiology text,It helped me.
I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me.Parasites, etc are particularly interesting.If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information.This book was very helpful.
A lot of information....disorganized
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

By far, the best in the series.
This book is awesome. In medical school and residency, i never needed a sanford antimicrobial guide and this is why. Helps provide a solid foundation for microbiology and infectious disease.During rounds or morning report i would constantly quote or refer to this book and people would be like "you're kidding", but it never failed me. I've read The Red Book cover to cover, Nelson's infectious diease section, Harrison's infectious disease chapters, and much of Feigin's book. All the info in those books is so familiar because of this book.
GREAT book for coursework and boards!!!!
this is such a good book for coursework...during my classes i felt the professors went TOO Much into random detail and i could not tease out what was important and what was junk...when i started using this book...all the important facts became obvious...there are charts at the end of each section...I used those as quick review before the boards...a month before my exam i re-read through the book from front to back...and during my 2 days of microbio review i just read through the charts...the corny cartoons actually help a lot!!! and they give some good clinical facts....goofy book...but great information...almost every single students at our med school had one...

Quality Micro Review
This is one of those review guides that's just dumb enough to be useful.Rather than give you a dry and crusty review of microbiology (which can be quite the crusty topic), this little text uses cartoons, pneumonics, and mildly off color jokes to cram facts into your head.I used it for the microbiology component of my medical school education, and then reread it with excellent results while studying for my step I examination.

It's ok
It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).

Lots of typos and missing info.
Good study guide when the answers were in the back.Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent.If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader?For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed.The textbook is great.

Wonderfully Informative Book!!!
WOW! I love this book.Every time I read part of it I learn so much stuff that I never knew before.It is fairly advanced information but it is written in a very understandable way.I am in high school and I like it because it teaches in the same format as my school's biology text books.I use this book because I like to read about this stuff.It is so facinating.If you are in a high school biology class, read this and you will be light years ahead of every one else! ... Not the best genetics book out there
This book is ok, but you need a decent understanding of genetics to follow many of the chapters. The authors are very effective at overcomplicating very straight forward concepts, which is frustrating if you're simply trying to review, and even worse if you're trying to learn the info for the first time. Definitely NOT for the genetics beginner. I think you can get a better genetics book for the money.
Get up to speed fast by reading this book
Though I have been interested in molecular genetics for decades, I have been out-of-touch with the excitement in genetics that is percolating out of the huge amount of data coming from various genome sequencing projects.Want to know why there is so much excitement?Then I suggest you read this book.
One of the best and most comprehensive books available on the subject
This book offers an up-to-date view of molecular genetics and the functional laboratroy tools and theories used to address various inherited disorders. The language is very approachable and the book is wonderfully cross-referenced. New developments in various computational fields are addressed and key websites are given for data analysis so that the interested reader can familiarize himself with these tools. This is the gold star standard for practicing clinical microbiologists

ONE STEP BENEATH EXCELLENCE
At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. Pathologists, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and anybody whose business concerns infectious diseases will find the book useful. The classical Microbiology laboratrory text
This book is comprehensive, well put together and thorough in all of its aspects. It is an invaluable text in the microbiology department. I and my workplace have a copy, and it is the most often refered text in our laboratory only Bergeys and Mandell come close. All aspects including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, laboratory metheds etc etc are covered it is a one stop clinical microbiology text. A TRUE GOD SEND
This is one THE best books I have ever read about Lupus. As a Lupus sufferer, it is important to know aspects of this illnesses. This book goes from the diagnostic phaze to the definition of and the treatment of Lupus. It is very detailed and concise in its approach. Doctor Wallace must be one heck of a rheumatologist because he took very complex subject matter and made it coherent for the average American. This book is filled with information on various treatments for Lupus, a prolifera of testing procedures and an explanation of co exsisting autoimmune diseases. Any individual with Lupus, their families, physicians and social workers should have this truly well constructed text!
A God Send
This book is one of the best out there on Lupus.Mr. Wallace disects the disease into many parts because Lupus had many frustrating facets to it.After reading this book, I am going to talk to my doctor who does not think that I have Lupus, because I don't fit neatly into a box.I can't wait to tell this doctor that my last blood test showed the anitphospholipid levels were extremely high.I noticed it, he didn't.Thank you Mr. Wallace for naming the symptoms, and the cause of it.My "gut feeling" was right.

Fields Virology
The book pictured on this site is the Fourth Edition of Fields Virology.However, the "Book Description" in the "Editiorial Reviews" section on this site is for the Third Edition of Fields Virology.I hesitate to purchase the book because I am unsure which edition you will be shipping.Before I place my order, I want assurance that I will be receiving the Fourth Edition.

Best out there for MAMMALIAN virology
My take on this two-volume set is that if you are going to put out as much money as this set costs, you should get a lot for it.This two- volume set is simply the best I have found for MAMMALIAN virology, with a close second being 'Fundamental Virology'.I stress the mammalian virology, as it omits a good bit (if not all) of the plant- associated virii.The basics of all virus structure are in there, regarding plant virii, but beyond that, there is information lacking.Despite this, when purchased as a graduate-level or upper-undergraduate level text or reference guide, there simply is no other text of this scale.There is a lot more text than graphics, but this does not (in my opinion) deter from the value of the text.If I could, I'd give a 4.5 star of 5, only for the lack of plant virii information and my personal desire for more graphics.i will say that the CD-Rom has more than enough graphics to make up for the book's seeming lack of graphics.As a 'financially- burdened' Pathology trainee and Virologist by employment, I will say that this is worth the price and effort to read.Note that it is written to the biologist who has some knowledge, albeit foundational knowledge, of biology.

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.Read more

Pictures are pretty bad
I am a medical student and I want to dis-recommend this book, especially to medical students.What makes a biology textbook good in my opinion is above all the quality of the pictures.And since the pictures in this book are poorly designed and poorly laid out, I can only dis-recommend it.

Very hard class but the book is great a great source for learning
a lot of info but it is broken down into bonehead terms.....

Excellent introductory text on Proteins
This is a great introductory text on protein science. It starts off with the basic chemistry of amino acids and polypeptides and goes from there into higher order structural organization of many proteins of many families. Reading this book allows one to think about protein function being a direct result of what the structure imposes. Although this is not a protein chemistry book, it's a great place to start appreciating how proteins do what they do following some elegant design principles.
Basics of Protein Structure - Great for revision!
I used this book a lot for one of my undergraduate courses three years back.It's excellent at explaining the fundamentals of protein structure, it's written very clearly and the diagrams are easy to understand and appropriate.I found it particularly useful when studying immunology, the explanation of immunoglobulin structure, splicing, and mechanism of action was better than some of the other textbooks I used from the library.I finally bought a copy as reference and to aid revision of some basics while applying for research associate positions within the biochemistry field.

This is a great reference book.A great place to start if you want to learn about confocal microscopes.The chapters are written by experts in their specific field of confocal microscopy. Ordering for second time
I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

For MS-1s
This book is adequate.I cannot give it a much more glowing review than that.I must agree with some of the other reviewers in that it lacks good figures.The text is ok.I would definitely discourage anyone from buying this as a reference text.

This book is handy when you got Lyme

Poorly written, poorly organized
This book is poorly organized on all three levels of writing.
Yes,Very good book!
It's easy to read, easy to understand, very good graphics; Kuby is a very friendly book for new students, and for refreshing many concepts if you are very busy (and I bet you are!). I love it. But if you have more time available for reading, I would recommend Fundamental Immunology (Paul) and Cellular and Molecular Immunology by Abbas. Anyway, never trust in just one book. And try to keep up-to-date with new material on scientific magazines. See, in research you don't depend on books, that's only at the beginning or if you have to refresh some concepts. Once you have your knowledge, you will be reading papers on scientific magazines and less books. Many times, the concepts you have learned on books can change very fast. Science is a dynamic field, always changing. Always remember that. I wish you good luck in your career!

Fascinating material
I used this book for one of my favorite classes in college on biotechnology.It will show you the cool side of science and all of the neat things you can do with biology and DNA.The level is low enough to where you only need a minimal background to understand it, basic biology classes and preferably genetics.After completing the book you should be excited about the future of biotech, and you will have some understanding about how it works.

Good introductory material for the technical
To those who are interested in the functional aspects of the DNA this is the right introductory stuff. It covers areas including basic molecular biology to commercial methods for manipulating the genes. Pretty useful for someone who's more interested in the technology than the biology!

Good overview but lacks technical rigor
I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department.Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in asomewhat shallow and repetitive way.I have also seen clearer and moreconcise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, andthere is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area.This isnot necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora ofinformation found in the biotechnology field.If someone wants a broadreview of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you wantto focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else. ...
