Title is misleading - and other reviews are woefully bad
The word "comprehensive" in the title is the objectionable term here since this book is essentially a series of short, insufficient passages.There is nothing here that couldn't be found for free on the internet or with a little bit of work reviewing *any* basic "starting your own business books." This book is really a great resource. I have devoured it. There is so much useful information in it and it is the first book I have found on this subject that goes into all it would take to make this a great career move. I was looking for a great home business and I think this book will be a great help. I wish I had found it sooner. Good job for the authors.

An excellent resource for coding professionals
I was very pleased to find this book on Independent Medical Coding.I had been considering just such a career, but didn't know where to begin. This book was exactly what I needed.It gives the experienced coder an alternative career path into entrepeneurship without doing"billing".This book provided me the first stepping stone inwhat is soon to be my new career. I would like to see the authors do aneven more in-depth book, providing even more information about this field. Because books of this nature are so rare, a comprehensive reference wouldbe wonderful, and I would gladly pay extra for the information. Used This Book Distance College Course
AH! This book was SO frustrating! Took this class distance and had a terrible time! I am very self motivated and have taken distance classes before, usually no problem working through a book--but this one was so vague in areas that it made doing the exercises impossible. No answer key to check your work, and if you get an instructor like mine (who didn't seem to have the time to teach anything indepth) it will make using the book worthless. This book only left me with a very basic understanding and looking to a future in coding, I transferred to another college that uses different resources. ... Read more

Good "Getting Your Feet Wet" Book
Medical Coding has interested me for a while and I bought this book to see if it was something that I wanted to pursue.So far, so good.Surprisingly, it is easy to follow and understand. Be aware that you need to have a the CPT Coding book starting with the Chapter 2 exercises.I found it strange that the answer key for Chapter 2 was incorrect as being misnumbered and having one too many answers for the exercises.I wonder how many other mistakes I'll find in a book that's been around for years.

Excellent Teaching Tool
I teach CPT Coding, and use this as my textbook. It provides excellent examples and explanations of CPT coding concepts, and is in an understandable format. This is the second edition I have taught from, and it will continue to be my text of choice.

Good Information
This book is a good beginner course in CPT.It's refreshing to buy a workbook and actually have the answers in the back for you.I have used it often, and it was a good refresher course for me.

BETTER CPT BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE
While this is the "official" CPT book from the AMA, you can get a much better tool by purchasing the PMIC Coder's Choice version of CPT 2003 for [$$] more. The PMIC version includes exactly the same book as this one PLUS a comprehensive CPT tutorial, full-color illustrations, thumb-indexes and spiral binding. We have been using this for years in our medical clinic and our coders won't have anything else.

If you're going to update your cpt book, be sure to pick this one up. Not only does it come with tabs to divide each section for quick reference, but the spiral binding is extremely convenient for looking up codes.
