4-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Presented
I am currently using this book (the 2nd edition) as a student at Western Career College. The layout is very well presented. There are colorful pictures, tables, etc. for those that learn best visually. But if this isn't how you learn, the writing in it is as good as the pictures. It even comes with a CD that is very healthful as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have textbook
This textbook, written and edited by the field's leading experts, has been needed for quite a while. It includes all the necessary information that any perio text should have---chapters on etiology, prognosis, treatment, etc---but goes above and beyond. With chapters covering complex suture techniques, systemic disease links, microsurgery, implants, medically-compromised pts, conscious sedation, and surgical principles, this text is the first truly comprehensive lesson in periodontics. The high-quality color photos set the bar high for future textbooks on the subject, and it belongs in the library of not only residents but accomplished clinicians. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary
I liked the dictionary as I could find most of the terms I looked for. Several of them had colorful illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dental Assistant Graduate
I just wanted to respond to the only review on this book. It is a dictionary not a picture book. If you want pictures you'll want to look at Delmars Dental Assisting or another book teaching dental. This book has most of the words I needed to find while attending college. It is for definition of dental terminology, great for students.

3-0 out of 5 stars adequate, but not spectacular
As the title implies, this book is a dictionary, nothing more. I was sorely disappointed to find out that there were no pictures, diagrams, or illustrations in this book whatsoever. It does include almost every word you could think of for a dental reference, but I hoped it would have more on the morphology and anatomy of teeth. For instance, if someone wondered what a marginal ridge was, it would tell them, but without a picture to show where they are, it is very hard to grasp the concept. I would not reccommend this book for someone looking for clarification of oral structures, only for people who only want to know what something is, not where. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition Goes Beyond Expectations
The second edition of this useful text goes beyond expectations. There is an increased emphasis on safety using minimal levels of nitrous oxide during most dental care (less than 50%), as well as the current 'standard of care' use of titration procedure model.Includes and relates the ASA Physical Classification System. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great source!
This book is wonderful. The first few chapters especially, taught me so much about the anatomy and mechanics of the TMJ. This book is a great addition to a dentist's library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but overpriced
I believe this bood does a very good job in explaining the functional aspects of occlusion and the TM joint. My only concern is that for the price, I would expect a book with color photographs and maybe even a CD-rom.That being said, I think the information and organization is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!
This book is an enormous help and reference to me whenever I have to do the family's teeth (I find it saves money - my wife does the haircuts), though there are some issues around acute temporomandibular disorders and chronic pain management that I do not feel are fully addressed.I fully agree with the reviewer from Columbia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT
I had to get this book for school, and I am glad that I had to get it because I used it so much, in every class, referenced it many times for homework assignments and for term papers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Wilkins is amazing!
I attended a lecture given by Dr. Wilkins and had my 8th edition text autographed. She is a vivacious, wonderful woman and gave me the refresher I needed. The book is a wonderful part of what it means to be a dental hygienist. To see so many different editions (and so many matching gel pens) carried into the lecture hall was amazing.Truly a book treasured by the prudent dental hygienist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A leading text for Dental Hygiene
Now in its 9th edition, Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist retains its standing as a leading text for dental hygiene.Readers of this text will find it useful as an initial source of information for some topics and as a supplemental source for others.Chapters devoted to core content (as dental radiography) can be used as either an overview to a separate course in the curriculum, or for summary and review upon completion of that separate course. The chapters in Section VII Patients with Special Needs offer accurate introductions and overviews for a wide variety of special needs individuals and contain current information grounded in recognized and authoritative sources. An extensive listing of resources follows each chapter, encouraging further pursuit of scope and depth as desired.A dental hygiene educator for 24 years, my first encounter with Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist was the 2nd edition of this text 34 years ago; today's 9th edition continues to be a valuable inclusion in the professional library of any dental hygiene student or working dental hygiene professional. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Root canals
Unlike the other reviewers on here, I am a dentist. The fact that anaerobic bacteria exist in teeth is not news, nor is the idea that these bacteria in other parts of the body are unhealthy. Thus, the idea of disinfecting a bad tooth was born, and it is a HUGE leap forward from the old GV Black school of yanking teeth. (Another reviewer mentioned that GV Blacks texts are still used in dental school. He is noted for his original ideas on cavity preparation design for silver fillings and a classification system of different kinds of decay. He is not considered a great researcher or real authority on modern dentistry. He would not recognize dentistry as it is practiced today, and you would not want to go to any office that practices the way he practiced 50 years ago.)
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is GOOD SCIENCE
Unlike the second reviewer from Boston, who from his comments exposes the fact that he/she probably only glanced through the book without reading it carefully, I think this book is a GREAT SCIENTIFIC ADVANCE.The millions of bacteria living in dental tubules of a root canal treated dead tooth (the tooth without living roots is dead since it has no blood supply) do not cause any external pain symptoms. These bacteria get no oxygen (since blood is absent) and so their adapted metabolism produces very harmful toxins continuously damaging important organs of the body. I would suggest this reviewer to read some politics behind how the dental associations were created in order to eliminate any responsibility dentists had for protecting human body versus protecting dead teeth. Most dentists are trained and paid to be teeth savers and somewhat innocently end up becoming body killers. They don't know what they are doing, just like the pawns of any systematic hierarchy where the leadership defines the agenda, and makes the pawns serve its interests. The words "Science" and "Prophecy" are much abused by the establishment in order to spread fear among the curious population.I found no prophecies in this book.I only found good, responsible, and non-political Science at its best. And finally, I am no high school drop-out inventing conspiracy theories.I have a Ph.D. in my field and I have investigated the dental profession by reading many journal articles, lawsuit information, and books.

5-0 out of 5 stars IATROGENISIS AT ITS PINNACLE !
Dr. Meinig's book is first rate in all respects. This information was first brought to light by the genius of Dr. G.V. Black, the dean of the dept. of oral surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Black fully disclosed the conditions that occur involving osteonecrosis of the maxillary and mandibular bones as well as the treatment protocalls needed to correct them in one of his many textbooks titled "A Special Dental Pathology". Black is still touted as the "Father of Modern Dentistry", and many of his texts are still used to this day. The interesting thing is that this work was done in 1915 ! Good doctors such as Black, and Dr. Weston Price, as well as others performed a great deal of excellent and invaluable research work many years ago that should have, and still can save mankind from a myraid of suffering and misdiagosed, mistreated maladies that can often become life threatening. Many actually expire from conditions that began as a result of the irresponsible endodontic, and general improperly performed dental procedures that we all fall victim to by trusting our dental proffesionals. Dr.Rosenow from the Mayo clinic postulated on the "Focal Infection Theory" over half a decade ago that dealt with this situation and his great work has been laid aside as well. I believe our dentists need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask themselves how many lives they have destroyed. Its time for a major change in the way dentistry is performed in our country. We the people must become informed and educated so we can prevent these abuses by our "trusted" dentists. By all means, buy, and read Georges excellent book, learn all you can about your health and find an open minded, honest, dentist who is willing to "LEARN" to do things properly. YOU, are the final authority regarding your health. Don't forfeit that right by trusting an uninformed, greedy dental person. I nearly died doing so, and will suffer the rest of my life as a result. The Endodontic Society has a great deal of "Flawed" statistics that they have absolutely no back-up research to support. ... Read more
