This book needs some corrections!
I purchased this book along with a few others to practice for the CDA exam. Most of the information was pretty good, but I found a lot of mistakes. Some of the answers are wrong and if I hadn't gone to school then I wouldn't have known the difference. Overall it is ok, but if you don't already have a vast knowledge of dental assisting then I would recommend a different guide.

Good for PAT section
First of all, this book is not as bad as others make it out to be.But I think people should realize that this book is NOT a complete guide for the DAT.The science review sections were condensed...very much like preliminary lecture notes.However, the PAT section was very helpful.I found the level of hardness on the real test very similar to the book's.What I suggest is you use Kaplan or TopScore (some very heavy duty review books) along with this book for the PAT section.Then, a few days before the test, flip this book open to go through the materials quickly to keep your brain in science mode.And, of course, constantly practice the PAT section.My prelimary PAT score was 13 when I signed up for Kaplan (which was useless btw), and with this book I got an 18 on the real PAT.

A Closer Look at Barron's
I am using this book in conjunction with the Kaplan review book to study for the DAT.The information is good, but the book does lack a CD Rom practice test, which I feel is necessary to properly prepare for the test.It is a great complement to other review materials, but I don't think it would work as well alone.

I know the material is somewhat outdated. . .
But the old information actually lays a good foundation for the principles of the new information.This book does help make the difference between passing and failing.It really helps with learning to eliminate the distractors even if you have no idea what the question is asking for or what the answer choices are.

Great Review Book
This book was key to passing boards!!!I did not use the book to memorize test questions, but help me direct where I needed to focus my studying.I took every test in the book and I recognized repeated questions for all sections, except the dental anatomy and occlusion.Even so, the book was still beneficial because it did help me see where I was weak and needed to put more time in my dental decks. Overall, it was a great guide and great tool that helped me pass part I boards.

good for last minute review
If you are looking for a book to learn the material covered on part two, this is not the book. But if you are willing to memorize every exam in this book the week before you take it, this book will prove to be very helpful. The questions were very similar and some were exactly word for word (on the computer test version, I dont know about the paper test version). my suggestion would be to study the way you normally would and the week before memorize every test in this book especially the pharm, oral surgey, oral medicine section. keep in my that you want to make sure you have the latest ADA guidlines on premedication to make sure the info is updated. The book may not get you the higest possible score but it may be the diffrence between passing and failing.Basically if you are caught in a jam and did not prepare and only have a week before the test this is the book. ... This is scientific fact not pseudo-science
Dr. Huggins graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry in 1962 and received a master of science degree from the University of Colorado in 1989. He is no quack, he is a crusader for health.
Read this book and save your health
As a practicing physician, I would like to respond to the review by "palm dentist". This is the typical reply that you will get from closed minded dentists who just want to "drill and fill" then go home in their Mercedez and have no idea what a devastating blow they have dealt to the human beings who put their trust in the dental profession. The problem is that mercury leaches slowly over many years and the effects of the poisoning of the system do not develop until much later. On top of that the patient makes no corelation to his filling and simply presents to his physician while the dentist continues on his merry way with no clue as to the devastation that he wrought. Already, in the published literature, heart disease has been corelated to gum disease and bacteria from the mouth. It is only a matter of time before the whole truth comes out. Amalgam use is 200 yrs old. In 200 yrs they could not come up with a better alternative. It amazes me that they got away for so long with using the most poisonous heavy metal on the planet as a filling material. There is not one shred of proof that mercury in amalgam is safe and does not cause long term disability and death!
Another Pseudo-scientific money-grabbing topic
As a practicing dentist and scientist who could stand to generate a lot of income from the unneccessary removal of amalgam fillings, believe me when I say that from a "toxicity" standpoint, amalgam is a proven safe material, having been used in almost every country in the world for over a hundred years. There are other drawbacks to the use of metal fillings (esthetics, expansion-contraction) that should factor into one's decision to use composite over amalgam to restore a new lesion, but from a 'poisonous material' standpoint, I am in concurrence with the American Medical Association, the American Dental Association, and the World Health Organization, that amalgam fillings are safe, reliable, and effective. ... Very Good Answers to Hard-hitting Questions
I have been a dental hygienist now for two years, and was still a little thrown back when patients hit me with questions that I just wasn't postive I knew the answer to.Ones such as:"Why does dental treatment cost so much?" or "Are you any good?" And the toughest question of all to answer, "Do you treat patients with AIDS?" These rough questions often left me fumbling to come up with a well thought out, yet correct answer.That was until I read Robin Wright's book.This book helped me to be more comfortable answering the not so easy questions that come up when I am conversing with patients, and even helped me to communicate better with the office staff as well.Because I am able to answer these questions more effectively due to this book, it has helped me to develop a better rapport with my patients, and has built up their trust in me as a dental health care provider. Reading this book has taught me to really become a better listener in general, and to understand my patients questions and concerns.Until I read this book, I never really knew how rewarding being a dental health care provider could be, because I was always nervous about saying the "right" thing.Now I am more confident in myself, and in turn I feel that my patients are more confident in me as well.
