This book is an excellent description of the extensive renge of issues dealing with changing the appearance of a patient's smile. The book is clear about its objectives and is very easy for anyone to read and follow.After reading this book, patients can easily decide whether they are candidates for cosmetic dentistry and get a reasonably good idea of the procedures involved.The author has discussed several treatment options for every situation, and he has included self-evaluations for patients to use in making informed decisions. An introductory chapter of relating the smile to the entire face presents a unique perspective. Dr. Goldstein discusses contemporary interdisciplinary approaches in creating different aesthetic effects. The explanations are accompanied by excellent illustrations that demonstrate the changes possible by procedures in modern dentistry and medicine. This is a well written book but lacks in problem-solving
The Essentials of Dental Caries describes current opinion on dental caries. It covers caries in enamel and dentine; the effect of saliva, diet, and flouride supplemention on caries; prevention of caries by plaquecontrol and patient motivation; and diagnosis and management of caries.However, this is a specialty book which should be more focused on problemsolving. Mixed feelings
There is a lot of information in this book, and I mean a lot.That's a good thing right?Yes and no.For being such a large, reference oriented book, this has one of the worst indexes I have ever seen.Its terrible.They obviously spent a great deal of time on the book, and its mind-boggling that they wouldn't put a good index in.As such, this is pretty much worthless for quick references.So we are left with a HUGE book, probably suitable only for perio residents, since they are probably the only ones with the motivation, obssesiveness, and lack of sanity to plow through this.Add a good index, and I'd give it five stars. ... Excellent book for the undergraduate dental student.
I would like to see a more complete version of this book written for the professionals.It provides a good review of the topic although at times lacking in depth.Highly recommended for the dental student.

Great for reference, too much for a single course
Simply put, this is the end-all be-all when it comes to pathologic analysis of disease states.Typically this is for 2nd year Medical School Students and/or Pathology trainees.Unless you are going into pathology as a sub-discipline, you may be overloaded with this information.If you want a concise primer on all things pathology, look into "Essential Pathology" by Rubin, which is intended as a summary of the 4th edition seen here.Of note is that the Essential Pathology does not include the CD-Rom that comes with this book, which is the best pictorial-based review I've ever seen -- worth the cost of the book alone!

Good reference
This is a good reference book for those NOT specializing in treatment of oral and facial pathologies.I strongly recommend another book called Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology: A Rationale for Dioagnosis and Treatment by Marx and Stern because it is replete with excellent photographs, illustrations, and discusses a disease from its pathogenesis to treatment phase thoroughly. (I own this book as well as the one I recommended.)

A pathology instructor from CA
While good in intentions and accurate in information presented, the book lacks clear and concise order and becomes very confusing for the begining pathology student. It also focuses too much on obscure conditions while ignoring more common ones. Very disappointing.
